The metrics used to assess effective half backs are usually:

  • disposals
  • intercept marks
  • metres gained
  • disposal efficiency

I think he may have been considered elite or close to it for all of these. It is why some commentators had him statistically as the bench AA defender. Our 2021 was pox. Ziebell was far from it.

He can join Dumont and Polec then I guess as superstar players for the past 5 years.

Ziebell ain't that bad from defence. His skills are much better compared to when he's in the guts and under pressure. I'm happy to see him back there

I come in peace, how is CCJ travelling? Got to decide if I keep or delist him in my fantasy keeper league.

Solid uninterrupted preseason, but not exactly flying based on training reports.

I don’t think you’ll regret dropping him.

If Jack Mahony is available though, make sure you nab him as a priority. He’s basically JHF with more impact in the contest and around goals.

He’s training like an animal. Lock him in for all 22 games and finals.

Except for the 2.5 vs. 3.9 on the score involvements line...
I would think looking at the context of average score involvements per game for Lions vs North 2021 might illuminate a little here:

Brisbane 24.5 average score involvements per game

North: 17 average score involvements per game. That is roughly a 50% increase from on scoring opportunities.

We have one team that is generally getting into a much more successful place to score and a preliminary finalist.

The other unable to score and winning a spoon.

Ziebell in 2021 couldn’t help who his teammates were.

This might sound a bit counter intuitive, but the role of a rebounding defender is really to do as little defence and as much offence as possible. It’s pretty hard to successfully set up a counterattack from defence when you’re in the midst of the contest.

Defence in the modern game is really all about systems and structures - having a 1 on 1 defensive situation these days is almost indicative of a defensive breakdown. Those structures are based around channeling the incoming football to where you have the numerical advantage, winning the footy as a result and then feeding the ball out to the rebounding defender who (hopefully) was able to keep clear of the contest. That’s the goal.

A classic example of that defensive breakdown was the game against Geelong last where Hawkins and Cameron tore us apart. The defensive structures (and midfield) fell apart which led to too many 1 on 1’s. Our defenders won quite a few of them, but they’re not going to win all of them by a long shot, and losing them means goals. Hence we got belted. Whereas down the other end, the Cats’ structures were impenetrable- they didn’t have to worry about 1 on 1’s cos it barely ever happened.

It’s a bit like how you have defensive forwards (a la Kayne Turner) whose job is to prevent those rebounding defenders from clearing the ball, and aiming to keep the ball inside 50. Measuring them on goals kicked is t really the right metric - yeah it’s nice but their real job is to blunt the other team’s rebounders, which leads to goals for teammates.
I understand and agree with what you are saying but there will always be a place in the game for 1v1 defensive players.
