I mean two quick zippy small forwards. Even one would be nice for a change.

We can’t draft 5 mids every year forever.
Nick Watson one to look out for in this draft to fill that need for us

I think we're judging Phoenix too harshly. He's needed time to build up his body and is a good size now. Judge him at the end of the year.

With regard to Kozy, he came in with a ready-made body. We shouldn't be comparing the two.

Lastly, there's a young fellah called Nick Watson in the next draft that goes alright.

Agree give Spicer another year to prove his worth, disagree Pickett came in with an AFL body.

Watched Watsons highlights, looks a classy little forward.

It is critical, to our structure. Think Milne, at St Kilda. They built with him, until he retired. Yeah, they didn't win a flag, but he was crucial to their rise. You can't expect to get into a position of making the top 4 and winning a flag, and then bring in a ready made small forward. Top-ups? Yep. But the foundation needs to be set, early.

I think you might be getting ahead of yourself when you talk about rise. We’re minimum 12 months away from going anywhere. Get your contested ball winners and KP‘s sorted first, the guts of the team, they take time. Hopefully we have that by the end of this year. Then target your secondary players. Maybe Nick Watson in this year’s draft.

He looked good against Richmond. Even his first game had flashes. He needs to put a decent body of work together this year.

Mind you, we’ve been that bloody awful the past few years, it’s probably folly to dismiss anyone.

I’m with you. Think we need to address it soon. A Kossie Pickett type or two would be nice, crumbing Larkey & Chom and harassing and chasing when trying to stop the defence from clearing it.
Hmmm and we traded our pick to the dees that became Kossie. We took Mahoney, Chom, and Perez in that draft. Kossie a premiership player and has played more games than those 3 combined, with Perez and Chom coming off injuries as juniors. Lets hope this is the year they both get their bodies right.

As Dwayne would say, we'll agree to disagree. If I see that ball continue to come out of our forward 50, piss easy, I will lose it.

It's kind of a bad faith argument comparing Pickett with Mahony, Comben and Perez. We got Tom Powell with the pick we received in exchange for the one we gave Melbourne, who then traded it down to get Pickett. Obviously, we couldn't see into the future and know that we were comparing Tom Powell, but ultimately, we need him to turn out better than Caleb Serong, Kysaiah Pickett, Will Day, Miles Bergman, Cody Weigtman, Mitch Georgiadis, and Sam de Koning in order to win that trade. We could have had any of them with that pick.

Could also have been Liam Henry, Brodie Kemp, Thomson Dow...

Perez shall now be named Perig after the preseason photos I’ve seen, looks to have packed on plenty.

Rome wasn't built in a day A21.

Firstly I acknowledge we need an elite small forward. 100%. Arguably the biggest need on our list.

Couple things I'll say on this though:
  • There aren't that many elite small forwards in the comp, there are even less that play both ways (offensive & defensive). Many clubs have one or the other.
  • A good small forward in our side the last two years would have been about as effective as a bible in a mosque. We've had much more pressing areas that needed fixing until now.
  • We are a very very big chance of taking Nick Watson with one of our firsts this year. Caufield Grammar boy who Clarko has watched play with his son for years, mates with WPhil & Drury. He is a unicorn and I'd be seriously be thinking about taking him with pick 2.
  • Lachie Schultz from Freo, who I rate highly is FA end of year, we have been reportedly into him in the past & Logue/Tucker are very close with him.

The thing ppl need to get their head around is that we were never taking a small forward at that time of our rebuild.

Was just thinking the same thing.

If I could revise the decision today though, I would trade Tom Powell and whoever we got out of Mahony, Comben, or Perez) for Caleb Serong.

Teams need difference makers, none of those we have are that right now (but could become), Caleb Serong is someone opposition teams have to plan for right now.
