Yep, Hawkins looked dangerous in the first half. to be fair, as much as people rag on Hawkins for his weight. Not too many in the league would be stronger one on one. The guys is a beast in that regard. I always find it funny, the guys in the AFL that look like slightly overweight accountants (Hawkins, Lake, Dew) are usually stronger than the absolute beast looking ripped players. Mass must mean something to a point
Holding your position has a lot to do with weight as well as strength. I'm fat and not very strong but If you ask Gibbo to try and move me from a standing start, he'd struggle. Sure he can lift more than me and is stronger by any measure but his 90kg going one was and my 125kg going the other i'm going to win.

His basketballing capabilities are regularly on display with his jumping, marking and how he holds/handles the footy.

Lean is better for an ageing body but a heavier built person going at pace will more than likely hurt you....not to mention the mental challenge of facing up to a "gorilla".

Being versatile is Roughs greatest strength.......but the opposition still underestimate him.

And given you are not allowed to hurt anyone anymore there is no point Rough being too big. He does not crash packs anyway.

I am always amazed at how lean these blokes are.

You can't carry much excess when you have to run 15kms a game.
Didnt Crawf get clocked at 28ks for one game towards the end of his career?

Robert Harvey was regularly in the 20s even towards the end of his career.

I think Crawf would have pushed 20km regularly. The Boundary umpires, back when there was only 2, would rack up the biggest numbers about 20-25kms.

As a key forward, Rough is prob averaging 15kms, now with the new caps, that could increase. I see it as a very intelligent move for players to shed weight. Strength against your opponent will be irrelevant if you're out running your opponent to the contest.

Isn't it also an age-related thing, too?
I think Hodgey was quoted once saying that Adam Simpson advised him to lose one kilogram a year after he reached 28 years.

If you carry less weight into your 30's, there is less pressure on the body and your joints, and it enables players to have greater longevity.

Perhaps. But I don't think Mitchell or Burgoyne have gotten any lighter.

Hodgey was always carrying overs, so perhaps a good idea for his longevity.

Lewis lost a lot of weight over the 2012-14 period, he was 26-28y.o. and needed to add endurance/speed to his game.

Yeah that was Burgoyne who said that. But I think the others have taken the same advice.

I stand corrected. I was certain I saw Burgoyne relaying the same bit of advice on HawksTV.
He may very well have, I can't believe Hodge is the only Hawk doing it, we trimmed Lake down when he came over and by all accounts the entire list is looking leaner this year as part of adapting the game plan to the new interchange rules no doubt

Lewis has certainly become a lot leaner in recent years. Roughy is looking too lean now if anything. Schoey has dropped some mass from the last couple years (not age related though).

We look to focus on core strength and balance a lot with out players, being strong through the hips without being top heavy.

I think we also let players natural body shapes develop a lot more now instead of trying to make the skinny guys all big etc

Shoey was very top heavy and slow when he came back from his knee. He lost a lot of size from 14-15 and got back some of his speed and agility which helped him be a much better player.

Schoey has also gone from having to match the opposition power forwards to being able to play to his own strengths (athleticism) as a forward himself.

Different game as a forward for sure

Pittonet seems to have lost weight also going by the picture in Wednesday's training. Got a feeling in my bones that this guy is going to improve quickly. He has a really good attitude and a bit of mongrel.
Aahh..how I miss that. Also miss how Lake would stand up to any player and not take any s**t from anyone, whether it is Hawkins or Ballantyne.:D

I only saw him a couple of times at BHH last year, but was very impressed by him.

Was talking to someone from the club yesterday, I mentioned how impressed I have been with Daniel Howe during the Jan training sessions that I have been attending and he said that they definitely see him as a mid/rover type due to his large tank. Now I know it is not a big surprise that they see him as a mid as they have alluded to this many times, but I don't think it was widely known that he had a big tank, so when you combine this with his skills and composure it would appear that we have a rare beast on our hands.

The other name that was brought up as having caught the coaches attention with his pre-season performance was Billy Hartung. He is set for a big one this year. Of course I feel totally validated now because Howe and Hartung are the ones that I have repeatedly mentioned as starring in my training reports, so Yay for me!! ;)

Jordan Lewis copped a mention as well in relation to his fitness and intensity level so I would expect to see him bounce back from a marginally less awesome year in 2015 with a big one in 2016.

Apologies folks, there won't be a training report from me today as school is back and I had kids to drop off. Also, it is peeing down rain and i don't want to get wet. I will be aiming to get to two sessions next week (definitely 1 but hopefully 2) and will report on both.
