I responded to you regarding Mitchell. What he says is in direct conflict to what he and others have done on the field. We have moved away from specialist position players. Mitchell plays 90% of game time so any suggestion he can run is really a reference to his speed not his fitness.

Why the Gunston and smith examples are not so useful is because these players were competitive in physical contests with their direct opponent from the day they started playing. Yes they have both improved but they were not a liability in that area the way hartung is. Hartung was virtually without an opponent all season. When Richmond sat a player on him he was far less effective. They literally pushed him out of the contest so he couldn't receive the handball.

Lastly, on hill he is short and skinny but he is much more agile than hartung. Hill uses that agility to avoid contact. He is still a liability in the air and tackling but he can still win the ball or get around a Shepard through agility. Hartung runs in very Straight lines so he is going to need to be stronger to be equally effective because he is going to need to hold his position as opposed to dancing around his opponent.

I respect the fact that you have at least tried to engage me on valid points even if I disagree On them. Thank you for that.

Do you work in a call centre dude? You seem to spend a lot of time on the keyboard during the day.

Can anyone confirm the dates for the Hawks training camp in Maroochydore? I thought this weekend but can't find any details.

AFL Sunshine Coast twitter are advertising an open training session, Sat 12 Dec, at MMSC, Fishermans Road, Maroochydore, 8am to 1pm.

Mitchell was making the comment regarding how players are trained in the AFL (read Hawthorn) these days. Whether or not you can reconcile that with what you observe on the field on match day is irrelevant, the work that is put in to the players day to day at Hawthorn is focused on their strengths. This is from a direct quote from a player that has been there for 14 years and won 4 B&F's.

Also your comparisons of Hartung to Smith and Gunston are unfair. You are comparing Hartung now to what Smith and Gunston (and even Hill) are at now. When Smith started to take games on and be an impactful player he too struggled with tags. It wasn't until Hill really hit the scene that he went to the next level. It's very hard for teams to shut down both and usually we see that although one can have a quiet game it has been very rare for both to have quiet games.

It is also unfair to criticize Billy for saying he runs around 'with no opponent'. From what I can see he has been playing his role in the team. We are not in 2005-06 anymore where we have to throw our players to the wolves. You could say Langford got lucky in the 2014 finals because opponents where more mindful of Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Lewis, etc. Who cares? Langford did his job. Hopefully one day he can step up to be the main man.

Anyway I think this debate has run its course. I will just ask this, what are your expectations of Hartung? Obviously he has worked extremely hard to come back to preseason training in ripping nick, and has knocked off the best time trial runner over the last 3 years. To me that says that he is driven and wants to get better. That sort of professionalism reminds me of Mitchell and Crawford and if he can get to half their level I will be very happy indeed.

Numbers don't show anything tbh. I too don't get the love. Just hacks it forward more often than most
We won a few flags in the 80s with that tactic ;)

True indeed. But there seems to be a leap that highlighting a strength equates to ignoring a weakness.

What I meant with Hodge and Lewis was that losing weight hasn't negatively impacted their ability to play on the inside, or they still have the body strength to do so despite losing significant weight.

Hodge Lewis already had the strength, so losing weight correctly wouldn't impact the strength component to a certain degree . Hartung needs to develop it, its completely different. He has a teenagers body, his core needs to develop and with that lean muscle will be developed.

I've seen Smith come to our club at 77kgs as purely an outside player incompetent at laying tackles. He's now 82 kgs, packed on 5kgs of muscle through his core and can now hold his own in a one on one.

I thought he played far more aggressively last year.

I really hope O'Rourke can have a strong preseason and step up next year. Would be nice to have him and Howe claim a spot in the midfield. Hartung another one who can really secure his spot, the reduction in rotations and removal of the sub will benefit his development greatly. Lovell another one who could land a few games, expecting Willsmore to get a debut in 2016 also.

Over 5 years?

So let Hartung develop over 5 years also instead of concerning ourselves with how he looks in a photograph in only his 3rd season.

I never said Hartung doesn't need to develop his body did I, I said he would be developing his strength you're just not going to notice it in his appearance over 1 summer.

I find it astonishing that anyone would be concerned when the club is as professional as it is, some around here (not necessarily suggesting you) seem to think they know better than the club, which is laughable really.

If Hartung isn't where he is meant to be then the club will be onto him about it but lets not pass judgements based on photos.

All I have ever said is that I was disappointed in the lack of any development and I get called misinformed and ignorant and I should just leave it to the club. I didn't respond by calling people names. Unlike anyone who has responded to me, I have actually used examples of other players. The closest anyone has come is Michael Tuck (who wasn't short and retired 24 years ago) and Gunston who is not even remotely the same kind of player.

Find me a current player that is sub 180cm that is good and doesn't play forward pocket that lacks strength through the core? Every decent player I can think of has visible muscle mass through the hips, gluts and thighs and generally has develop chest and shoulders too.
So Brisbane is boring!!

Does anyone know if Burton did the time trial? If so how he went?

Anyone notice any changes to players body size?

The senior boys have only been back 5 minutes.
They would be just getting back what they lost over the break.

Or losing what they got ;)

I work for a "strengths based" organisation.

If you can meet the metrics on all the strengths in the right proportions you need and have them in the right spots at the right time, it gives you a three peat.

If you can't, you get found out a lot.

There was a training session this morning which I arrived approx 45 mins after it started. My thoughts on a few players;

Ryan Burton- was boxing on the sidelines with a trainer and then took goal kicking practice on both feet from outside fifty and close to goal on a angle. Was very impressive as he kicks very well on either side and hardly missed a shot. Kicks 50+ easily. Monkey told me he sees him playing similar to a James Hird type role where he can play forward and occasionally on the ball as he is good below he knees.

Blake Hardwick- looks well developed physically already for a 18 year old and impressed me with his field kicking during a keepings off drill.

James Sicily- to be honest I thought he would have put on more size compared to last year but still looks under weight.

Shem- he physique is simply awesome! He will cause some serious damage if he is deemed good enough to play AFL. Towards the end was given ruck tuition from Monkey and David Neitz. Due to his strength was able to push his opponent off easily during numerous marking contests.

Willsmore- enjoyed his work. Very accurate left foot kick and quite mobile.

Keiran Lovell- pocket rocket. Well built for his size and performed well during the keepings off drill where they had to constantly move hitting targets by foot and hand.

Kaiden Brand- in full training and looks like his long lay off has enabled to put on more size which is probably no surprise as his shoulders needed the most work after his surgery.

Breust- I think he likes the weights room! Noticeable increase in upper body size.

Kade Stewart- seriously if you didnt know any better you thought it was Chad Wingard running around. Excellent left foot kick but needs more size

The group as a whole is quite healthy which was backed up by a number of players. The session was mainly focused on running drills with a few players feeling the pinch towards the end. They are off to the Sunshine Coast on Friday.Cheers.
