No offence to Hodgey - while he is a great leader, he doesn't have the footy brain that Mitchell does. Just watch any of the grand final recalls - the way Sam reads the game is brilliant. No great surprise that he is doing coaching courses as we speak - wouldn't be at all shocked if that has been encouraged from above.

I think he has a footy brain, look at the way he tells everyone what to do on the ground, he's not as articulate or eloquent as Sam and maybe not as smart but I think he has good footy smarts. He has a way with people, more so than Sam, and is able to get the players doing what he wants, really important for a coach. FWIW I think they'd both make a decent job of it as a coach but I think maybe Hodgey is better suited to it. I will be following with interest both their careers after footy.

I think Mitchell would need to leave the club for

I think Hodge and Mitchell would be different kinds of coaches, Hodge may be better as a line coach than a head coach with his feel for the game

Mitchell could be that tactical head coach like Clarko innovating the game

Completely disagree, Hodge is the on field coach and is peerless when it comes to "smarts", it is half the reason he is such a good leader.

Not to say Mitchell isn't elite also but you are very much underselling Hodge.

Must admit that I was disappointed to read that Will Langford is on light duties.
I am really hoping that Will has a really big year, a good pre-season would go a long way to achieving that.

Up to now he has been participating in full training so it is probably just something minor or precautionary.

Could not disagree more.

Taking nothing away from Sam, but Hodgey has one of the best football brains I have ever seen.

In that category, they'd be both in the top 5 in the comp.

I think you're right, but there's a tendency to consider that an instinctive footballer like Hodge can't be a good coach. I've always assumed that, if you just do things automatically, you may have difficulty teaching other players.

But I think Hodgey would be different.

I could be wrong but pretty sure I have heard Clarkson say in the past that Hodge makes his job a lot easier given Hodges ability to coach and take control of the team on field.

I know the coaching staff feel the team is 2-3 goals better off just by having Hodge out there whether he plays well or not.

Mitchell will be a fantastic coach - speaks with great thought and intelligence about the game. Can't ever see Hodge being a head coach, and I am always dubious about former great players becoming coaches - but I would have Mitchell on board as an assistant under Clarko with a view to him taking over should Clarko deem him the right choice.

A lot to like about this post. If, this were the case, he could probably remain with the Hawks, and do his apprenticeship at Box Hill.

Hey you awesome Hawks fan's, hope you are all having a happy new year so far and destroying many icypoles today with this 40 degrees plus weather. Anyway here are the preseason update training photos that you guys might like to see.
