Good to see Rosebury out at Hawthorn (and wearing a Hawks singlet!)

May as well get the best to advise the best.
If only it was Stevic. I'd have a new avatar.

Even if we did it would be meaningless as we're a 'horses for courses' type of team

To a degree but only in about 3 - 4 spots.

Our primary rucks will be: McEvoy and Cegs bar injury or resting

Forwards: Rough, Gunston, Breust, Rioli and Pops

Backs: Gibbo, Chip, Stratts and Birch

Mids: Mitch, Lewis, Hill and Smith

Utilities: Hodge and Burgers

That's seventeen spots which leaves five, likely to include Schoey up forward and Doc down back.

That leaves three, which is likely to be one defender either a tall in Spang/Kiwi/Brand or a medium like Gus. The other two spots will be mids coming from Langers, Hartung, JOR, Howe or a utility in Whitey.

Don't see it any other way.

Has Roughhead or shoe (or out of interest- shem) been doing any rucking drills?

I think its possible that we could look to play McEvoy by himself, Have rough or Shoe chop out, and play an extra runner/mid. With the sub rule gone it would be a massive run advantage, and we have 3 endurance machines in Smith Hartung and Hill.

We have always subbed the second ruck out since the rule was introduced, so it will be interesting what we do. Shoe, Rough, Mcevoy Resting, Gunston is a very tall forward line.

I'd doubt this. Given we have the three speedsters, I think we'd be better situated to carry the two big men. Remember the old adage - a big man doesn't get any shorter. I think the combination of big men with runners will be where we excel next year.

Anyone going to training this morning? I'm hungry for another training update.
Hope so. Hot weather shows who works hard but the wet will tell us whose skills have really reached another level.

I went.

Might give some details later, when I get a chance.

Everyone looked fresh and fit. Lots of full ground drills, some zone work, some small handball games/drills.

Anyone going to training this morning? I'm hungry for another training update.

I went along. Sitting in the stand watching the rain drizzle down brought back memories of games there in the 90's. A full turn-up of players went through their paces in 2 main groups. One practiced stoppages while the rest played soccer as a warm-up. Roughie ran lengths on the far wing, while Spang, and later Burton left the field early. Shiels, Gibbo and Burgers ran laps while the full-ground drill went on. Skills were very good in the slippery conditions. Will Langford was on-field the entire time while JML was noticeable with his sharp speedy bursts.

The squad has trimmed down and they look hungry. With reduced interchange and no subs this season, endurance is going to play a big part.

The rain stopped towards the end, while the squad ran laps in two main groups. Hilly and Billy of course led the way. Even the coaching staff were in on this running caper ! My real bit of exercise was walking at pace back to the car just as the rain set in again.

Thanks for the update :thumbsu:

Good way to be hungry at the start of the season - trimming down

Day=Made. Thank you sir!

Thanks Garf. Will I see you there on Friday?

Well said.

The game hasn't really ever changed structurally. The teams with the best spines usually win.

Clarkson's mantra right from word go has always been "big strong spines win premierships" - that was all he had to sell to the members in the first 3 years he was at the club and we drafted accordingly. Seemed to work out Ok, even with some bad bad failures from certain list managers.

Skills were quite good today for a slippery wicket.

Brand working one on one with Nietz late in the session was good to see.
Heatherley also doing some boxing and one on one reflex work.

Liking what I have seen of Hardwick and Lovell so far. Lovell is just a little goer, who I would be surprised if he doesn't debut in his first year.

Burton and Surman still on light duties of the recruits.

Senior players just cruised through the session mostly, with a good level of intensity. Hill looks like he's really enjoying himself out there, and guys like Bruest and Gunston seem to do everything with ease.

Try the "magic mushrooms" in the cafe for breakfast if you get the chance. Delish.

Two things I noticed in the photos:

Roughy has slimmed down
Shem has dropped muscle on his biceps, but still looks super strong

Do you think players like Lovell/Howe/O'Rourke/Langford will get a go via older mids resting during the year?

Pardon the intrusion, I'm a ranges follower so naturally I'm interested in how Hardwick is going. Can you elaborate on how he's impressing? Someone like him who is so strong through the hips seems made for midfield time and I believe he could develop into an effective mid/fwd (say 60/40 mid/fwd time). Under good coaching at hawthorn he should do well.
