Do you think players like Lovell/Howe/O'Rourke/Langford will get a go via older mids resting during the year?
Howe, definitely. I see him being given ample opportunity.

Langford needs to have a big year and tidy up his disposal, but he will get games undoubtedly.

O'Rourke and Lovell, I would think they are in line like a few others.

Pardon the intrusion, I'm a ranges follower so naturally I'm interested in how Hardwick is going. Can you elaborate on how he's impressing? Someone like him who is so strong through the hips seems made for midfield time and I believe he could develop into an effective mid/fwd (say 60/40 mid/fwd time). Under good coaching at hawthorn he should do well.
He looks very assured with the ball in his hands, and is a good size. Seems to have a bit of intensity and mongrel.
I like the look of him, is all. Will be keen to see what he can do at Box Hill this year.

Just saw a photo of Roughy in a singlet on his instagram. He is looking very thin and lean. More so than even after he returned from his time off mid year in 2015.

I realise it's likely an intentional shift to allow us to run out games better due to the interchange cap but this also leaves us exposed to being monstered early and kept out of it due to being too battered to catch up.

Though I do have faith this will work out. Our club staff have the runs on the board.

It's all in the hips.

Perhaps Roughy will be spending more time in the midfield this year???

Think you may be right. Schoe and a resting ruck as the key forwards with Rough and gunner transitioning through HF and mid. Interesting change.

Rough moved further from goal last year too, perhaps the fitness staff are doing a similar thing to Hodge, trim him down as he ages to extend longevity and mobility.

Still looks even too thin for that. He looks like he should be off playing basketball. If he was 100kg last year he'd be sub-90kg now by the look of the photo.

There is no point making Rough a monster because he has never played the role of a monster. His agility, especially for somebody who ruptured an Achilles, is quite remarkable.

It will be interesting to see the difference in game style and results between the Handbags and us though throughout the season, they have monsters we have tall agile players.

His basketballing capabilities are regularly on display with his jumping, marking and how he holds/handles the footy.

Lean is better for an ageing body but a heavier built person going at pace will more than likely hurt you....not to mention the mental challenge of facing up to a "gorilla".

Being versatile is Roughs greatest strength.......but the opposition still underestimate him.

Strength is in the mind. There are wiry people out there who can be stronger and tougher than those of body types like the handbagger Hawkins.

This is my point. The slimness is likely intended and in theory should work out well for him and the team. But the other side of that coin is that we can't be certain that slimming down all our players won't backfire resulting in us getting monstered by some average sides.

I agree with Dewnior that more midfield time is on the cards for Roughy in 2016. His clearance per centre bounce attended rate is elite and would be an even better option than Lewis or Langers to go 3rd up in the ruck around the ground. The only question mark here is how much of his dominance in this area was due to his size and will it carry over being 10-15kg lighter? Bloody hope so!

Given our lack of ready to go depth in the KPF area (O'Brien and Sicily don't have the size) it's a bit of a risk to send Roughy out of that area. If Schoey goes down then we may have no choice but to play Fitz or Shem as our power forward. That or reinvent the forward line so that it's just a bunch of smalls and med-tall agile forwards... Essentially a forward line of mids... Essentially Sydney Swans 2012. But at least we know that can win a flag :(

I wonder if the loss of weight last year which I feel forced him up the ground as they tried to work out how to best use him opened the door for this or if it was planned as part of the interchange cap.

Gunston is pretty effective and Shoe may now be the bigger forward as he can carry a little more weight on his frame being a few cm taller than Rough

I'm not concerned with out thin our players look....more concerned about their strength KPIs. If Rough and Co can maintain same strength indicators but shed weight and become more mobile, endurance, etc then thats a massive win with the new interchange cap

I think the weight loss (a by-product of not being able to train or eat solids for a few weeks) led to him playing further up the ground out of necessity. Was just fortunate that it suited him well and that Schoey reached a new level late in the season.

Yes, Gunston has been effective with a similar build but a lot of that is because he had Roughy there to throw his weight around where Gunner couldn't. Schoey's value to the side has likely skyrocketed due to this. Hopefully his confidence and aggression from the GF carries through.

Gunners is also a much better reader of the ball in the air than Roughy and has a bit more pace and agility to create mismatches.

I agree we need someone down there that can throw their weight around, if Shoe can keep that level of aggression and confidence he built we should be well served

IF you watch the 2014 QF against Geelong Hawkins is able to bench press Lake off him. Lake played well but in body on body contests he was well beaten. Sure some people can punch above their weight but your average player can't.

Mental strength is in the mind. Physical strength (which is what we're talking about) is not. Though strength can be determined by factors such as adrenaline and how well your sympathetic nervous system works which are related to the brain/mind.

Muscle size doesn't equate to muscle strength but there is some relation. Chances are Roughy will still be quite strong but also not as strong as he was before. Hopefully the difference is relatively negligible and well offset by the benefits of increased endurance, speed and agility.

I think they all will be doing rotations.

Expect defenders like Duryea to rotate onto the wing and all our forwards to spend time up the ground.

Twice.

It was concerning in the first half but we smashed them in the second and it was no longer a factor :D
Yep, Hawkins looked dangerous in the first half. to be fair, as much as people rag on Hawkins for his weight. Not too many in the league would be stronger one on one. The guys is a beast in that regard. I always find it funny, the guys in the AFL that look like slightly overweight accountants (Hawkins, Lake, Dew) are usually stronger than the absolute beast looking ripped players. Mass must mean something to a point
