Apologies folks, there won't be a training report from me today as school is back and I had kids to drop off. Also, it is peeing down rain and i don't want to get wet. I will be aiming to get to two sessions next week (definitely 1 but hopefully 2) and will report on both.

Dont worry Axeman, you weren't the only one to miss training today. One of our most senior players was happily off seeing his son start his first day of school as well.
 
Was talking to someone from the club yesterday, I mentioned how impressed I have been with Daniel Howe during the Jan training sessions that I have been attending and he said that they definitely see him as a mid/rover type due to his large tank. Now I know it is not a big surprise that they see him as a mid as they have alluded to this many times, but I don't think it was widely known that he had a big tank, so when you combine this with his skills and composure it would appear that we have a rare beast on our hands.

The other name that was brought up as having caught the coaches attention with his pre-season performance was Billy Hartung. He is set for a big one this year. Of course I feel totally validated now because Howe and Hartung are the ones that I have repeatedly mentioned as starring in my training reports, so Yay for me!! ;)

Jordan Lewis copped a mention as well in relation to his fitness and intensity level so I would expect to see him bounce back from a marginally less awesome year in 2015 with a big one in 2016.

Yep, Howe, Hartung and Kiwi are the three I see pushing early in the year for senior spots. :thumbsu:

3rd pic down. "Ben Stratton collects a couple of high-fives on his way back to the defensive 50 after running forward to slot a goal"

Gotta tell you that was a nice goal. Perfect timing, came out of nowhere and took the intercept mark, went on and slotted the goal. Shame he couldn't do that in GF. Goal of the day for me. Sicily is another one featured he too kicked a couple of goals including a Stevie J impression of just turn side ways and bang the ball through after taking the mark.

Got to be a dare or paying a bet you'd reckon (or hope - surely you wouldn't wear them by choice, but they were all the rage in the '70s).

Didn't notice...at the time.

Did notice Fitzpatrick's sock... bright pink socks certainly stand out! Talking of Fitzpatrick. 1) He tried a Stevie J type shot for goal..... stick to your day job and b) went up for a marking contest and found a team mate crunching him front on. He ended up on the ground like a cat trying to clear a fur ball... but as a real trooper got back up after an all 4's crouched 8 count.

Good to see Brand doing a full extension with his healed shoulder. Shows it's strong and that he is confident in it.
 
I'm not concerned with out thin our players look....more concerned about their strength KPIs. If Rough and Co can maintain same strength indicators but shed weight and become more mobile, endurance, etc then thats a massive win with the new interchange cap

It's simple physics: F=MA (Force = mass x acceleration) and strength is the measure of how much force. For example something that has 1 Newtons of force has less strength compared to something that has 10 Newtons of force.

A leaner version of a person will never be as strong as his bulkier self. The force that a smaller version of a person will produce will always be less than the bulkier version, with the same amount of acceleration placed in the movement. Therefore, the strength of the leaner version will also be less than the bulkier version.

Having said that I am not worried. We are not a team that kicks to one on one contests. Players work hard to make room and put a gap between themselves and the opposition and then seek to attract the ball. In terms of midfield, we may lose some one on ones but make up for it with run and agility.
 
Pittonet seems to have lost weight also going by the picture in Wednesday's training. Got a feeling in my bones that this guy is going to improve quickly. He has a really good attitude and a bit of mongrel.
For those who have seen him: I've heard him likened in style to Dean Cox (less nose), is this correct or is he more of a Robbie Campbell kinda guy, or somewhere/nowhere in between?

In all these discussions about replacement players I keep forgetting Langford. How has he been travelling have not read much? Will he step up or end up fringe?

He is travelling well. Looks to have tidied up his composure/disposal during match play drills which was his weakness. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it translates to game day.

For those who have seen him: I've heard him likened in style to Dean Cox (less nose), is this correct or is he more of a Robbie Campbell kinda guy, or somewhere/nowhere in between?

His nose is actually his biggest resemblance to dean cox. I'd say his build and playing style is more in the Mark Jamar style. He's bollocking and not a leaper, but can palm it well to good spots.

Not really. Mass plays a large role in explosive power/acceleration. It's the whole Sprinters vs Endurance runner physique argument. There is a reason 100 metre athletes who need to generate explosive force quickly can look like natural body builders.

Hawks look like they are tackling the new interchange rule by betting on endurance while some clubs think that more resting forward will bring big power forward style bodies back into the game.

The human body is highly complex. Fast and slow twitch muscle fibres are another piece of the equation here.

This. Bulky muscles have very little to do with being fast. It is all about genetics and if you got the gift of fast twitch muscles. Certain muscle building exercises can enhance (not create) fast twitch muscles. That is why sprinters are usually very strong, to try and get that little bit extra.

Yes, but acceleration over 20 metres is more important than over 100 metres for an AFL athlete which is why someone like Cyril would beat Usain Bolt over 20 metres but would get hauled in at the 40-50 metre mark but by that time it's too late as Cyril no longer has the ball :p
