Today was my RDO so I took wee GFN (14 months old) to training. Was just a pretty light skills session, with the younger players doing most of the work.
For those who haven't had the chance to go to one these sessions recently, basically they shuttle between about 5 or 6 different skills activities in groups of about 5-6. I would say that in the roughly three years since I've last attended much training, the drills they do have become much more sophisticated (not sure if this is Scott's influence or not). For eg today they were kicking at goalposts from about 15 metres, with a coach telling them whether to aim left or right just before the kicked. In another drill they were kicking at a rope suspended between two goalposts at about 6 foot off the ground. Somewhere else they were kicking a soccer ball and tennis ball - not sure what that was about.
Not much to report on the players really. Hale and McIntosh were both out there, which was good. They didn't seemed to do much more than some jogging (in Hale's case) and wandering around (in H's case, although some would say this is match simulation for him...), but neither did many of the older players like Spud, Brady and Pratty. I couldn't see any sign of Boomer or Wellsy, but again this may well be routine. CJ was also absent, I would guess at work.
On the skills, I hadn't appreciated in the game situation what beautiful kicks of the footy both Gartlett and Bastinac are. I guess since both are playing inside roles and adjusting to the pace of the game, we haven't really seen how polished they can be - but hopefully this will come in time.
Two pieces of other news:
- the final demolition of the old change rooms was happening during training - only the social club left now.
- Wee GFN took two steps - her first - on the grassy hill in the forward pocket at the Arden St end while we were watching training. Clearly she was inspired by the boys training. She then went to ground immediatelya la Corey Jones.
