missed that one
but i saw hartigan take down rodan in that smother, smother, tackle drill, rodan tried to be cheeky by trying to evade him and hartigan nailed him to the ground a bit fiercely

good to see! :D

The kids should target the older, weaker players at training. :D

Re: Meyer, i believe i read somewhere that he was a very good junior runner and had professional coaching with his running when he was younger.

ON THE FAST TRACK

16nov04

YEARS of professional running have opened the door for brilliant Glenelg teenager Danny Meyer to be a first-round pick at Saturday's AFL national draft.

The classy midfielder/small forward has spent the past five years working on his leg-power with coach Keith Aiston at the Western Districts Running Club.
The result is one of the finest athletes in this year's draft pool - a speed machine who is a certain top-20 selection and who could go as high as No. 10 to Collingwood.

"There's no doubt all the running I've done has paid off," Meyer, 18, said.

"It's helped a lot, not only with my overall leg work (speed) enabling me to get to the footy but also with my balance."

Lightly-framed at 74kg, Meyer's powerful legs were on display at the AFL draft camp where he finished in the top six for the running vertical jump with a leap of 87cm.

"He's a real good athlete, an explosive player who can burst into a game and hurt the opposition in 10 minutes," Glenelg football manager Ken Applegarth said.

"He's got that really quick turn of pace, he's terrific below his knees and because of his strong legs he's a thumping kick."

Meyer, a member of this year's South Australian under-18 team which contested the national championships in Melbourne, competed in last year's under-20 Bay Sheffield 120m sprint as well as several other high profile running races.

While his pace alone excites clubs, his ability to turn a game on its head with some magic reminds some astute judges of Port Adelaide premiership hero Gavin Wanganeen.

"Danny has a bit of Wanganeen about him," SA under-18 coach Darren Trevena said.

"He's got great potential, great evasive skills and he's smart around goal."

Strong overhead and possessing clean hands, Meyer also has a good footy brain - an attribute which is tough to teach.

An Essendon supporter, Meyer has spoken to 14 clubs in the lead-up to the draft, including Adelaide and the Power.

The Bombers, whose first pick is at 14, are his preferred destination.

"I'm a big James Hird and Matthew Lloyd fan so to go to Essendon would be ideal," he said.

"But I've heard the whispers about Collingwood taking me at (No.) 10. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'm happy to go anywhere."

Meyer, from great Glenelg breeding ground Sacred Heart College, played just six games (one under-19s and five reserves) for the Tigers this year because of school commitments.

The son of Tigers under-17s coach Steve Meyer, Danny understands there is one facet of his game that does need work - his frame.

"I've got to put on some weight and build up my upper body strength, I know that," he said. "I've already started working on it."

Tambling moves like a Gazelle.very little effort but so fast.
Deledio all class.while i can understand the hype about Tambling, Deledio will be better.
Meyer there will be a few clubs thinking why why why.very impressive.A bargain at 12.
Polo looks a goer.wont die wondering.
Gilmour IMO will be the suprise packet of 2005.For those knockers who knocked Miller,s decision to draft Gilmour so high last year will be silenced.

Overall a great afternoon.amazing what kids bring to the track.

cheers!

Was Nick Daffy there?

There was some dude hanging around the mens dunnys that looked like him.
I was too far away to be sure.

I was only there for about 15 minutes, because my dad was in a rush. But I must say Tuck was looking great, unlucky not to play more games last season, so IMO hes the one to watch for in season 2005.

Darth, you should of seen him on the webcast when he was interviewed the day of the draft, he needed some Prozac pronto!!

As a lot of people said, maybe he was just nervous and/or is just a naturally quiet person, we'll find out in a few years times though.

good turnout today, considering we finished 16th last year

I specifically went down today to get my first glimpse of the new sprogs and espescially to witness Gilmour and Meyer and wasn't let down 1 bit.

I think these two are the smokies. What number was Polo wearing?

Tambling is a freak FULLSTOP - thanks again Dermie n co :D

Deledio looked very sound and reminds me of Gary Lyon (the football player). not flashy like Tambling but sure and effective.

Meyer indeed has a wonderful running action and i can definately see the camparisons his former coach has of him and wanganeen. He has the same sort of build and those John Wayne like legs but a very quick acceleration with balance and poise.

Gilmour is doing his second preseason and is theoretically a year ahead of the new recuits even though he is the same age group as most of them being a result of being picked up as a young recruit last year. I think he will given a chance in the ones if he performs at the burgs.

Cogs seems ok, Rodan seemed to carry a slight limp, did anyone notice that?
Moore, Hartigan and Jacko seemed ready for action as was our everest eaters Knobel and Simmonds. Staff was runnin laps, maybe its a sign of things to come as his withering body prepares for yet another onslaught. Knobel and Simmonds for me with staff as the third option.

The best part of the day was tamblings chase down the wing to regather the ball. Even though he didnt have his red suit on i still think we should simply call him FLASH, any takers?

Couldnt care less bout many of last years as i said was only there to suss the younguns but i did notice how well Browny trains yet Campbel and Richo seemed well abit less interested than the other players. I can only has a guess that they must be so over playing in finals year in year out that they've just seen it all before :D

The best part i saliva'd over all arvo was the competition for a spot in the ones next season will be red hot. There was close to two teams out there today both capable of doing the business on any given day. Wow what pleasant dilemma to be in

Best Draft ever in my books, very even spread of talent in the end and i know we payd for it bad but look at where we are now

what politics, who cares. We've had profits before but it still didnt make any difference on the field. Goin on todays turnout, we're all together and dare i say it again.....USHERING IN A NEW ERA :)

Very nice post.

Numbers were all over the shop.

Agree with Blx,Richo and Campbo weren'e trying to hide the fact that they were not into this particular program.

Quite a crap attitude really.

The sooner we ditch the old school the sooner we can start the new.

How were you planning to replace our 6'4 FF/CHF which kicks 60+ goals and is our focal point up front?

for those of you who dont go to regular training, tambling is a bit better! on wednesday he was no where near his usual standards at training. he is much faster when he attacks at the ball and he runs with it for longer..... on wednesday, at some stages he attacked well.... other times were quite poorly..... but being a much harder training session than usual he seemed to have eased off a lil. one thing is for sure he can barely mess up a kick or a handball! his skills were alright on wednesday. we never got to see proper kicking drills (possibly because we are so bad at it). tambling killlls when it comes to kicking and marking! got a great pair of hands! he is someone to look forward to.... i dunno if he gets nervous with a big crowd? i know its nothing compared to match day crowds, but being in NT he wouldnt be used to a big crowd? but im probably wrong! hope he can put some good expressions on peoples faces for next year! :D

go tiges!

I have never seen the infamous "cogs on draft day" footage!

There might be hope yet, considering Cooney, who was considered to be very homesick got over it in his 1st season and signed an extension until 2007.

once they make friends and settle into the culture of the club it becomes a lot harder to leave. most people when given a chance to get out of thier comfort zone decide to stay in it.

Meyer is my biggest worry.

Hopfully the kids will fit in well. :)

he looks like he's mixing in well with the players. they are keeping all the recruits close together. krakour and tambling get seen together quite often! hope thats a good sign! im sure it is.

This is probally the sole reason why i believe we will have nothing to worry about when it comes to Meyer
We have what about 15+ of his age range that TW will make sure they bond togeather.
proof in the pudding was the other day.krakour seems to have come out of his shell. No doubt in my mind it has to do with the above.

cheers!
