Training - Wed, Opening Round.

I'm glad they came out onto the track late this morning which was around 9:30am, because I was running late with issues with the trains.

MIA:

Hill
Saxena
Crisp

Anderson
Reef
Howe

Match sim (brief) teams: 18 v 18

Black:

Defenders

Josh, Maynard, Frampton, Parker, IQ, Houston

Mcstay, Buller, Lippa, Schultz, Beau, Jamie

Mids
Cameron, Nick, Pendles, Jordy. Sidey, Allan wing

White

Forwards;

Membrey, Hayes, Howes, West, Sullivan, Harrison

Mids:
Steene, Prindable, Perryman, Long. Demattia & Steele wings

Defenders:
Cochran, Swadling, Smit, Ryan, TJ, Moore

As expected, the first session of the week -- even if its on a wed -- Is generally a bit light. There was some drills early on, with their line groups, before they got into some short match play.
After the match play, they did some more drills before finishing up.

Anderson must have a niggle or some soreness as he came out and went straight to the rehab group, did some running with Reef. They finished up half way through.

Moore fully trained, but Howe did some rehab after doing some initial early drills.

McCarthy was out and did the drills to start the session but went indoors as they did the match play. Given Saxena was absent too, this might be a way to ease them through after their first full game on the weekend.

Smit - it’s a pity that his work in general play didn’t match his ruck prowess, because he can jump very high and has the sort of aggression and strength that would stand him in good stead against the big boys - needs to tune up his kicking and become a safer bet when marking - he relishes the drill wherein the task is to punch towards the ground rather than clunk the aerial ball
IMO, if we want a dominate young ruck in the future, this is the guy that we should hope fully develops his game

Was expecting Jens report to be up by now but here is the fb Annabel report which just dropped

Players came out earlier than expected - Prindable first out again demonstrating his fervent attitude. He was closely followed by Saxena and regularly early bird Houston who often likes a solo warm-up prior to the main fare

Conditions? Grey overhead like Wednesday but reasonably warm

Anyone missing? Hill and Reef - Crisp and Saxena had returned to action

Rehab? Nobody permanently here - Howe did most of the drills but Anderson went to the pavilion side during the session and worked individually with a trainer on his agility with evasion of the cones on a repetitive basis. Moore came out and did all the early work and drills but vanished without any of the onlookers privy to the reasoning behind this so we hope there have been no setbacks with his injury

Warm-up? Again a small group consisting of Nick, Pendles, Moore, and JDG did their limbering up separately while the rest of the cohort mainly focussed on the mini-hurdles followed by some high octane sprinting in a staggered manner linked to whistles. This was quite intensely executed.

Activities - quite a few rotating stations of contesting work mixed with tackling with blacks and whites cleaving then splitting into vested and black or white clad.

Ruck work - there were two distinct phases of this with first just Smit and Steene palming to a couple of mids but later this occurred in the centre square with the latter and Cameron rucking to a host of mids likely to feature during our main games

There was also some whole ground ball movement with two groups intersecting one another followed by match simulation between the black and white attired and thereafter some final skills drills as players spread widely to partake of activities on a needs basis

Team selection? Of those named on the bench we expect Lippa and Pendles to play and they wore black but of the rest only Buller was in the darker shade and all of Long, Roan Steele, Steene, Cochran and Sullivan donned the white. So the mystery remains and unless Fly divulges early we may have to wait longer. Thus Buller looks like he has McRae’s imprimatur at this stage in terms of nod for selection but other potential first gamers await an official endorsement.

In light of the above the match simulation was very interesting. White consisting of those vying for selection above, Membrey, _Parker but those destined for the VFL, eclipsed their black counterparts, all of whom expected to line up on Sunday night, so this may have been an indication of the zeal among those wearing the whiter shade in terms of their efforts to impress. The black team featured some fluent passages of play resulting in goals but it was messy at both ends. Their defence allowed West to get free at one point and goal while their delivery forward was poor - sometimes they went the circuitous route when there were clear targets, while on other occasions Schultz was passed to as if he is over 200 centimetres a la some of the delivery Jamie has regularly had to tolerate. With Steene excelling against Cameron and Anderson being a clearance king of sorts, the white team went forward with some purpose. Once Steen palmed it emphatically towards an unmarked Hayes who was wide in the pocket but he cleverly snapped a goal. We will need to be much more connected and polished if we’re to beat the Saints but maybe the intensity of the black team was lower than their white opponents who would see their matchplay has auditions.

Random observations of players:

Steene - has been a slow burn but it’s hard not to see his growth and consider him as worthy of being able to handle the step up on levels

McCarthy - again looked capable in the forward line and any encouragement he gets from booting goals and being involved in the play develops his confidence

Anderson - while seemingly managing a niggle at this juncture, he dominated in the centre exploding from clearance and helping his team hit the scoreboard - he was playing on our forest choice mids, including Nick who at one point badly mangled a kick turning the ball over in the middle which led to a powerful attacking chain from the white team

JDG - played a mix of mid and in attack and at one stage received a pinpoint pass which allowed him to convert a long set shot

Hayes - is showing he has a few tricks in his kitbag and like Steene the extra body size appears to have helped him impose himself on contests

Harrison - needs to become involved on more occasions - still seems to be divesting himself of the cobwebs which are a legacy of his layoff.

Allan - caught spectating a few times on the wing - needs to keep running and presenting as a few times he was part of swift handball linking up from coast to coast

Buller - kicked a goal and moved around attack quite well - if Steene doesn’t play he will have to be the second ruck

Membrey - has been a reliable goalkicker this summer - today he booted one from an acute angle

HDM and Ryan - good to see them share in the enthusiasm of the white team and rack up some disposals.

Tew - again looked comfortable in defence and initiated some attacking moves

Cochran - steadily punched the ball away from threatening attacks by the black team, partly helped by some poor disposal into the zone but seems to be improving his game awareness

The old chatgpt coming in to summarise the tldr Annabel report:

Players arrived early, with Prindable first out again. Conditions were grey but warm. Hill and Reef were absent; Crisp and Saxena returned. Howe trained fully, Anderson did some agility rehab, and Moore left early for unknown reasons.

Training included intense sprint work, ruck drills, ball movement, and match simulation. White (players pushing for selection) defeated the likely Sunday team in black. Steene impressed in ruck, Anderson dominated clearances, and Buller strengthened his selection case. Coaches may delay final team decisions.

Maybe that is all we need rather than the long version.

Main training - Opening Round

Moore did some drills at the start before he disappeared inside and didn't participate in the rest
Howe completed the whole session
Anderson started doing some rehab, but then he joined the group a bit later on and completed match sim.

Short session for the main session. Started at 9:15 and finished before 11am. There was some drills at the start, line group, pressure drills, before they got into some match sim.
It basically ended after that, abet some players doing their own thing for a few mins.

Black team:

  • Lippa
  • JDG
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Elliott
  • J Daicos
  • Schultz
  • Houston
  • Pendles
  • Mcstay
  • Perryman
  • DC
  • Allan
  • Frampton
  • Sidey
  • Crisp
  • Beau
  • Buller
  • Nick D

* Parker, Long, Membrey, Steele, Sullivan, Cochran were all in white, but you can suggest the first 3 will play.

Positions in match sim: (some of these in white will play, this just for a numbers balance)

Black Defenders: Frampton, IQ, JD, Houston, perryman, Crisp
White Forwards: West, Hayes, Harrison, Demattia, Membrey, Howes (bench: McCarthy, Saxena)

Black Mids: Nick, Jordy, Pendles, Cameron, Lippa (Wing), Allan (Wing)
White Mids: Steene, Sullivan, Prindles, Long, Steele (wing), Swadling (wing) - Anderson bench

Black forwards: Buller, McStay, Jamie, Schultz, Beau, Sidey
White defenders: Smit, Ryan, TJ, Parker, Cochran, Howe

The white team did very well in match sim, won the 8 min block by about 15 points, thanks to very good ruck work by Oscar and clearance work by Anderson and Prindles

McCarthy's athelticm and agility was on show early as he clunked a few marks and slotted two goals, in the air and also his ability on ground level.

Looks like we'll see Sidey played a bit forward, prob rotates with Lippa from the wing. And also Crisp we may find in defence for this particular game, rotating through the wing also. I think this year we'll have many players that can play multiple positions rotating through lines.

Allan - caught spectating a few times on the wing - needs to keep running and presenting as a few times he was part of swift handball linking up from coast to coast
Done that for Ages

Lot of Times he gets lost on the Wing
