Hill is a proven match-winner but I'm not sure that either Reef or Harrison will move the needle all that much. Neither had truly established themselves as Best-23 before being derailed by ACL's and they weren't known for racking up big possession numbers. Hopefully they both make it back to AFL level but I suspect it will be slow going.

Aside from the return of Hill, Saxena's the one I really want to see make his debut. He seems to have genuine X-factor.

Im very bullish on Harrison as a role player.

Could be like Beau light, with much better finishing skills.

I share your enthusiasm about Harrison. He showed natural footy instincts and goal-sense in his limited pre-ACL appearances. Unfortunately he has missed a LOT of football, so is almost back to square one. Reef I find much harder to gauge. He always looked the physical prototype but seemed to lack the footy smarts of Harrison. Hopefully a more structured role in defence is the making of him but, again, its a tough road back from and ACL for a player still seeking to establish himself. Fingers crossed!

It is hilarious how much more agile than anyone else on our list Bobby is. Such an unbelievable mover
Our forward line has missed him so so much

At this point, I'd take him even as he is right now

Can't make our forward line any worse

The Bobby updates are beautiful. The fact that he’s consistently turning up and doing what is required of him is beautiful too. I’ve been a bit gloomy, but reading about Bobby makes me smile.

That's interesting on Howe. He's been alright down back, but Maynard and Frampton have been the real standouts in Howe's absence. I'd like to see a pathway for Parker back into the side, but would also be interested in seeing what we have with Ryan

I always think the same thing when I see clips of him at training. He is a totally unique player for us.No other player on our list has the skill sets that he has.

One of the most unreal athletes I've ever seen live. I ignorantly didn't rate him coming over from GWS (obviously did not watch him enough), but jeez he is exciting. Hope he gets back on the G soon

God damn i'd love to see Bobby back.
He's only 26 and is eeeeeelite.

Just adds something we literally don't have in the forward 50.
Speed and creativity.

Selfishly also want him to play incase he decides he needs to go to WA.
Need to pump that trade value.

But i'm firmly in Camp Bobby and hope he spends another 6-7 years on our list contributing and putting asses in seats.

An update of training today via Annabele on FB

Notes from the main session of training today

As players were filtering out from the rooms, they were greeted by a beclouded, deep grey bruised sky. The air felt damp and the evidence of overnight rain made its mark on the surrounding track and grass. The clouds dissipated just as match simulation ended.

Prindable as per usual was the first player out - today at 9.10. Nick as is customary was the last to grace the arena.

Anyone missing? The roll call registered ticks against all names as Cochran returned and HDM attended rehab.

Who was in the infirmary? As most of the squad warmed up in orthodox fashion - Sidey, IQ, Pendles, Moore, JDG and HDM attended this area on the outer side forward pocket at the River End. IQ and Pendles reintegrated into the main group, while JDG did light work, though it was good to see him outside going through his paces while under concussion protocols and HDM only completed some basic run throughs as he recovers from a stress reaction in his back. Moore did a lot of running (mainly sprinting) and some agility work and kicking and marking. His trainer filmed him while he ran.

Warm-up for the majority consisted of the staple menu of mini hurdles, with the higher hurdles added again, running with discs above the head and manoeuvres completed with the resistance tape. This was followed by some graduated sprinting over various distances until a select group completed some high octane sprinting close to the pavilion.

Drills? These consisted mainly of a lot of focus on competitive paired activities with the focus on evasion, tackling with swift movements to avoid the tackler. There were three stations which rotated.

Simultaneously Stafford was schooling Smit, Cameron and Steene with a lot of centre bounce tapping work. Later in the session he took this group with the addition of Buller to the John Cain Arena end to work on marking. He stopped them several times explaining points in a gestural manner.

There was some ground movement work with half wearing orange vests and the other bedecked in black. Again the emphasis was on moving the ball quickly under duress with the talls instructed to punch the ball to the ground to enable practice of ground retrieval which is not surprising given the recent spate of fumbling, albeit in somewhat challenging conditions.

The final item on the menu before the players undertook solo or group directed activities was the match simulation sans AFL sanctioned umpires. There were two teams - one donning black and the other white but no clue to selection was provided as what transpired was a mixture of AFL and VFL types which at least meant that some of the contests were more willing. All players had come out today wearing black but before this matchplay segment there were instructions from the coaches and half went inside to reemerge wearing white. Interestingly the team Nick plays for generally has the ascendancy but today he represented the black team which was beaten by the white clad 24 points to one. For the record Lippa and Pendles whose old bones were protected by long pants and beanie, eschewed this as they partook of some kicking practice together.

Random observations:

Elliott seems to be a bit fumbly at this juncture

Hill continues to build through matchplay and both here and in the drills his pace, evasion and skills stood out. Some of his field kicking was sublime and they can’t catch him when he accelerates.

Swadling did some neat things and again chastised himself when he made errors

West and Buller were the keys in the black team which was humbled but the latter did take a mark only to miss the goal from a tight angle.

Howe played forward for the white team which might be a harbinger of what might be to come though we are still short a KPD apart from Frampton this week.

At times the black team’s movement of the ball was constipated but when they kicked into gear it flowed well.

Cochran took an good intercept grab for the white team

Reef played in defence for the black team and looks to be slowly developing in confidence but will probably need a few more VFL outings to show he’s capable of enduring a full match before he comes under any consideration for the senior team

Anderson was busy and pretty effective playing for the white team

Tew with his top knot was conspicuous at times and he appears to have gone up a notch in terms of his consistency of output

Selection will be interesting with Sidebottom confirmed to be out along with JDG. One assumes Fly might go down the conservative route again and opt for the likes of Sully to fill one of the vacancies but with class going out the side we’re going to look a bit threadbare in this area against our chief nemesis. At least the wings this week won’t be Steele and Steele which wasn’t cutting the mustard against the teams with the modern day prototype winger. Roan kicked the first goal in match simulation today and will now probably remain in the team despite struggling for form. Crisp may return to this role as he often assumes it during match simulations. Parker will surely come under the selectors' notice.

HH is excellent on both sides of his body, has speed, and high footy IQ, if he can get back to his trajectory of improvement pre ACL, then he's definitely best 23.

Here are some highlights - the kid is very good.

I love the kid, but almost forgot how good he can be. I can't wait to see him on the big stage again!

Imagine a center bounce with Nick, HH and Angry in there in the future.

So we want to move Howe forward, risk disrupting our strongest line and all at a time Moore is still unavailable.

How about we just play West and leave Howe in defence where I think his presence can have a positive impact outside just his own performance.

Frampton for one looks a better, more confident player when Howe and/or Moore is lining up beside him.

I think it’s just an option being considered. A kind of break glass in case of emergency type deal.
