I noticed that disparity.

Maybe what they are hoping is for him to build skill in fending off then sort of dashing away, Riewoldt style, to find space for a lead??? I don't even know if that is possible - but he isn't big and strong enough to continually attempt to beat the biggest defenders, and if he builds that then he will lose mobility.

I like him up the ground, putting work into his movement and creating leads. He has a good reputation from coaches about his work rate and work off the ball so that would be the go. Even roll him through the middle, Roughead style from time to time would work for me. He's a decent field kick too, so can potentially provide so much more than a stay-at-home forward (if that position really still exists and has value in the way the game is played in the last few years)

I know I've gone on about this but he's not that good at wrestling and he doesn't have the height to out reach defenders so he needs to monster them or else they still get a fist in. His go is his smarts. His 6 goals he kicked against Brisbane all came from him having space not him wrestling. To out wrestle rance he would have to get up to Barry hall Tony Lockett size but they won't do that so why bother. Make him run and run so that he can beat his opponents with repeat leads and bring them up the ground and leave holes for Trac Hannan and Harmes behind him

He doesn't need to be built like a beast to play like one. I suspect they'll work on further strengthening his core which will make him better able to push off the big defenders.

But they've also been impressed with him losing weight.. muscle still has physical weight so you can't ask him to drop 3 kilos and expect him to then be physically stronger. You can get a little stronger but he won't be stronger than Rance Hurley and Talia if he stays lean so it's pointless

I read the Hogan article as them paying particular attention to him improving his one on one work, as like Topkent says, he's not that great at it, not that they just want him to stand one on one and wrestle with every defender he comes against. At least that's what I hope they're going with, "get better at this, but still use your main weapon of your work rate first and foremost."

Was a strange article, I’d prefer the coaching staff to tell him wrestling is a no-go unless he has a mismatch because as highly as I rate Hogan his actual 1on1 against a KPD his size is pretty average.
I think we're probably reading too much into the article - it actually talks about his learning to better 'push off and create space' so I think is more along the lines of his learning to best use his body to advantage rather than wrestle each and every opponent, which as you say just isn't going to work at his size.

It actually just occurred to me that it was written for the AFL site ... meaning Guthrie was likely just snooping around training, managed to get a quote from Matthews about some of the training Hogan was doing, and has run with an article about it. As you say, we're very likely reading far too much into this!

The way I read it what they want is Hogan has enough strength NOT to be monstered by the likes of Rance and co and losing his position at the contest. Strong enough to withstand that and then grab the metre or so break in the marking contest.

Rance isn’t really a traditional 1 on 1 defender. Interestingly in 2015 Hogan beat Rance convincingly - by virtue of using his body and footy smarts to get some separation and win that way, or that epic moment where he crashed a pack of three, including Rance, and took the mark. That he can do, and always could, and he needs to build on that aspect as much as possible.

Out wrestling on a one on one monster is never going to be his best bet, unless he can draw the free, and that can’t be relied on as a working strategy - umpires are too often blind to defenders holding. Also it’s a terrible look to be always looking for the free as a forward and means you miss the second effort and waste time. Hogan isn’t the only culprit on attempting that too frequently - I love Daniher as a forward, but he is over prone to wasting time appealing for a holding free and missing the second effort opportunity. Hogan gets particularly crucified for it though by the media, even though he’s one of a several forwards that do this a bit too often, ever since preseason 2016 when every media muppet suddenly started a campaign about his body language.

Just read your 'push off at the contest post", that is what I meant but you stated it better.

Agree with this. Hogan has always been a very good aerobic athlete. He’s also very smart and able to out manoeuvre opponents. Surely this training is about putting space between opponents so not to get caught in a wrestle with players like Rance.
He walked through the Brisbane zone last year when he kicked 6. Apparently they were implementing a new zone and he exposed it big time. I think with his running ability he should be able to play up the ground and work back into 50 for scoring opportunities.

I still think round 1 last year against the Saints, when he just ran Carlisle ragged was the prototype game I would like to see him play. Still kicked 3 goals, and gathered 21 touches.

Let’s not nitpick over a summer fluff piece.

Agreed hogan’s MO should be to lead up and at the ball carrier but he he also needs to learn how to wrestle/push off. If he just leads up at the ball, he will still be a one trick pony. He needs to have the skills to do both.

Weideman winning the rising star should pay $200++
Hahah

Thanks u just remined me when Trac was in his first year actually playing (his second year in comp due to his ACL)
When TAB had him equal favorites with Weitering for rising star. Neither had even set foot on the G' yet and the bookmakers were going nuts

Question for anyone who has been:

Is OMac looking bigger?

I saw a photo on Facebook the other day he looked bigger but also looked older. Added a few kgs on and a few years!

Last training of the year is on Friday at Gosch’s at 9:45. They do a sausage sizzle and have a coffee trailer as a rule. Also the horrible mascots plus a dodgy Santa do the rounds.

Bugger work. I can’t be there because I am busy and important at that time. I’ll see if I can talk Ancient into going to report back.

Sounds great, but I'm driving to Adelaide to pick up a puppy on Friday. I hate to miss a good sausage sizzle.

I dropped in today for about half an hour, noticed two young guys training for a bit one was wearing the number 37 and the other had hogans number 1 on, not sure if anyone can shed light on who they were? The guy wearing the number 1 was really tall but very skinny.

Also spargo is tiny but barely missed a target.

Maybe they were from the AFLPA and they were just checking out the training regime that the boys have to undertake. Need to make sure that whatever they are required to do isn't too hard, as we don't want them getting injured. Maybe thinking they should have their Mum's there in case they fall over and bruise themselves. Getting rid of the loose bricks laying around in case some ****head trips over them, you know, stuff like that.

I asked Ancient. He said Mitch King was wearing no 1 in the main group - Jesse was with the rehab group for whatever reason today doing a spot of goal kicking practice with Weedy. He wasn’t certain off the top of the head who was wearing 37, but we looked it up just then and it’s Dion Johnstone’s number, so it was probably him.

I popped in for a bit today. I wasn't concentrating too hard and mainly chatted with my mate, so my observations could be pretty sketchy.

- Oliver kicked the ball a lot and was getting a lot of penetration in his kicks
- I saw Bernie, Lever and I think Petty in a defensive drill and Lever was very instructive and vocal to both
- Balic was hitting some pretty nice kicks from the defensive flank into the guts in a mini game where there are 3 teams and the winner stays on and the losing team switches with the third team. He seemed to be amongst it a fair bit.
- Didn't see Trac or Hogan from my side of the fence at all
- Reports of Gawn looking slim and switched on appears to be pretty accurate

Okay so I have quizzed Ancient about training today so here are the things I learned:

Kent and Salem absent - probably hiding from Goody following the great boot camp mutiny. The rehab group included Hogan, Weed, Tommy - also the new dudes were separate from the main group doing some drills with Crossey and Garland, apart from the Casey guy whose name I can’t ever remember how to spell. Is it Fritsch? Anyway he was with the main group. Ancient didn’t see Petracca training at all but he must have done stuff with the rehab group early because he had a nice chat with him as he (Ancient) arrived and Trac was heading back to AAMI. He was shirtless so presumably had been running or something, unless he is just your run-of-the-mill partial nudist.

Hogan and Weed had a sort of goal kicking competition which Hogan won apparently.

It sounds like they were doing the same sort of drills as previous sessions. So they spent some time split into groups of defenders, mids and forwards doing things. Lewis is grouped with defenders at present. Ancient reckons Lever looks excellent, and is very vocal and encouraging and so forth. A very self confident young man.

He also singled out Brayshaw and Oliver for training house down honours. There was lots of running and then some match simulation type drills, moving the ball quickly through the corridor. The general impression was that everyone looked sharp so we had better win lots of things or I’ll get angry.

Apparently McCartney gave Pig a mighty serve for something or other - lots of authentic yelling and “if you don’t like it you can leave” stuff. Don’t know what provoked it, but Hibberd didn’t leave so presumably learned to like whatever it was that needed liking.

That’s pretty much all the detail I have except for the report that the Santa Claus seemed creepy somehow and Daisy was having her photo taken with about a million kids.
