I would like us to sign a CM to partner Sven in the long term as it looks like from watching this mornings game that Gundogan will play more behind the striker. Ideal would be Sven's brother Lars but I'm 99% sure that won't happen, maybe Kramer. THis is all based on Reus likely leaving at the seasons end

Charlie Adam is a good example of that. Too good for Blackpool, not good enough for Liverpool.

By the same token there are hundreds of top class players signed from these mid-lower table clubs who have made the step up. It definitely has to be assessed on a case by case basis in terms of their talent and as you say their ability to make the step up, you can't throw a blanket over all of them.

The problem with Downing, Adam & Carroll was not the clubs they came from, but rather that they were/are very direct footballers who just didn't fit the style we wanted to play. That's why they were dumb purchases, nothing to do with them coming from West Ham or Blackpool. Remember Morientes? High profile signing from Real Madrid and he was rubbish for us!

Look at the Ballon d'Or nominees for this year:
Neuer (from Schalke, 14th in Bundesliga at the time)
Bale (from Southampton, Championship)
Mascherano (West Ham)
Ramos (Sevilla)

Then you have guys like Reus (Monchengladbach), Suarez (Groningen), Torres (Atletico), Alexis Sanchez (Udinese), Isco (Malaga), Varane (Lens), Ramsey (Cardiff), Walcott (Southampton) who have all made the step up to becoming elite players after excellent seasons at clubs that wouldn't be considered in that top echelon.

Im hoping LVG keeps promoting youth players to supplement a star studded team.

Neuer was playing UCL at Schalke, Varane was the top CB prospect in Europe. I understand your point tho.

Surely he will stay, a £37m pound investment is surely given more than 12 months to fit into the system. People quite often forget how good this guy was, just 2 years ago he was Chelsea's best player and in the top half dozen in the league.

Chelsea have obviously moved on and have been going fine without him, but I would be surprised to see him leave United so quickly.

Strootman I can see joining us. However I want mata to stay, such a good player.

Want to keep mata as well it takes time to gel with the boys and so on. But if we sign Reus,strootman, or robben like we are linked to it will be hard to keep him. Woodward wants to start a united version of the galacticos. So we will go hard for both Reus and hummels. Then there is the cavani links but with Rvp,Rooney,falcao I wouldn't say he is the missing piece

In a few papers. Some Dutch guy close to him or the national team said its not if strootman joins united but when that lvg and him have all but agreed but more likely to happen in the summer as Reus is the number one target this window

pretty sure it would also be against rules that everyone breaks.
