I'm amazed you managed to finish this post with (what I assume is) a straight face.
I'm happy to take the piss out of players and managers and clubs. Like most of us on here.

Don't like the personal stuff, and try to avoid it if I can. When it's directed at me I just can't be bothered with it.

It's one of the reasons I don't talk about Hull any more. I know that it usually ends in discussions that get personal and nasty. I'd rather just give it a miss.

I've found Hull fans on here completely receptive to criticism about their club. I am thankful they took Kevin Stewart off our hands at a profit with him being shit just like Hull :)

Lol, everyone seems to have a different opinion on him. Some can't believe you let him go so cheap, some can't believe you got more than 1m for him!

I'm more shocked Pool picked him after he left us.

And offered him a new 5 year deal in early 2016, so obviously rated him.

He was decent in season 15/16 during an injury crisis tbf. Contract more about ensuring we sell for a decent price in his case.

If a club has money, they should be spending it IMO. If they overspend, it's their issue, but if they can afford it then it doesn't really matter.

Chelsea have plowed endless sums into players over the years and they're not any worse off for it. They've been successful, and had many world class players over the years.

I wish my club spent as much as City/United/Chelsea, rather than just let it sit there.

We made a nice decent profit for Stewart, good piece of business

Soton didn't take VVD for their France training camp, then VVD uploads a photo of him and his family in the France Disneyland straight after, the amount of needle is just top class

It isn't even a matter of us signing them, the sagas have just been an entertainment in itself

Jeez. All that talk about who spends what and how much. I'd love to see the current crop of managers have a net spend of £44M and win the league twice, finish runner up on the last kick of the league campaign and finish 2nd by a point in another season, which is what Sir Alex Ferguson did in his final four seasons.

His largest spend in a season was £92M on four key acquisitions (that includes Hargreaves and the loan + purchase fee of Tevez) and still only had a net spend of £51M for that season.

That is what I call a manager.

Football is a different game now so this statement is pretty irrelevant now.

Not really. I don't think you can expect to win a league title. Too many good sides and good squads and too many variables.

I expect a much better challenge than last year, and will be disappointed if we don't win. But wouldnt call the season a failure if it doesnt happen.

What do you think Pep's expectations are? He was quick to remind journalists last pre season that he had won 21 titles in 7 seasons previously.

I don't think it is. Value for money signings and motivation and tactics that suit the playing squad are still the most essential tools for success. Just look at the last two Premier League winners. Chelsea didn't splash ridiculous money last summer and many thought signing Alonso and Luiz would see them doomed to miss the Top 4 again.

It's hard to get value for money though in the current landscape.

And my point still stands, if you have the money, spend it.

He's been at two of my other clubs - Villa and Saint-Étienne.

Not so sure how he went at Sainté, maybe solid without being great otherwise they probably would have pushed harder to keep him. I found him disappointing at Villa. Fingers crossed he can at least be a solid performer.

Edit: phone issues. Grrr. Meant to be in response to go you pups

Hopefully he goes alright at La Viola ;)

He has the talent to be a solid no 8, his time at Aston Villa just a minor blip on the radar. Good club to grow into an established performer.

Fiorentina are incredible at picking up spuds/players with ruined careers and making them good again. Should be a solid buy for them. Veretout always was quality but going to Villa was always going to end in tears for him.

I don't think anyone in here as suggested clubs shouldn't spend money if they have it, moreso spending it well. Spending a significant outlay on that defence when the names on paper still don't scream "Title winning defence" is the thing most are discussing.

Alonso has done pretty well for Chelsea, how much did they spend on him 12 months ago?

Think the clubs expectations are more around champions league than league. Semis probably would be considered a decent result. Think a trophyless season would have him under a lot of pressure.

I'm more bothered with the league. If we're out of it before April I'll be disappointed.

Alonso cost £23m and there was a fair few lols about it.

Saint Etienne aren't happy with his snub.

Seems once a bigger club came calling his head had turned.

Fee worth around €5.5-7.5m depending on add ons I think.

Yeah they're not bad in that regard but I reckon they pick their 25-30yos well to build around (I'm thinking of their Spanish/Portuguese raid they did in 2012-13 on a relegated Villarreal and picking the eyes out of Sporting CP), I reckon Atalanta are a little better at turning older players fortunes around though, players like Cigarini and Denis performed well for them.
