Dunno how true it is, but I read something that suggested there's a bit more to the Paulinho bid than meets the eye. Something to do with Bartomeu's construction company competing for a contract on one of those artificial islands near China, and Guangzhou specifically, that is owned by the Evergrande group.

Then again, it might just be one of those silly social media rumours, but it would certainly go a long way to explaining a transfer as baffling as this one.
its very true

Apparently Watford were the only ones with reservations.

Either way, it's the smart move.
Doesn't prevent sides outside of England buying from the English clubs. Which means a player could be sold with no way to replace.

Not sure why all PL clubs don't make sure that all business is concluded prior to the first game.

If it happens it surely needs to be Europe wide.

The player could only be sold if the PL club agrees to do it though. Can the FA put something in place that restricts outgoing transfers after a season starts?

Adding to that, how likely is it that a club would agree to sell a key player when they know they can't get anyone in? I don't think the selling thing will impact on it all that much.

Nope. Plenty of clubs flog unwanted dross to Chinese clubs outside the window for European clubs. That's not going to stop.

Sometimes offers come in that can't be refused.

Personally believe that it's a lot of hogwash. It's not a big deal at all when it closes. Ideally every side is complete prior to the first game.

No, PL has no control over other European clubs. And players with release clauses will really be able to **** PL clubs over. Seems a really weird thing for all clubs to be happy with.

How many players in the PL have release clauses though?

We've signed Olarewaju Kayode from Austria Wien. Will go straight out on loan to Girona.

Pretty sure we were linked to him a few days back but I think I recall reading City was also interested.

We are pretty close to getting Joselu from Stoke it seems. 5m fee reportedly agreed and a medical has been done. We need strikers but his record seems pretty meh - hardly prolific in his career. Maybe he will play more in the 10 role.

Yeah it's especially pertinent now as he wants to move to get himself a spot for the 2018 World Cup. If he doesn't do it this window I think he might sign a new deal with Arsenal as moving next window makes even less sense (squad will be picked by then), so you can't necessarily just wait the 12 months and get him on a free.

I think it gets done for 35 if you are legit, it's just too good to turn down and could fund us trying to get Thomas Lemar or Jean-Michael Seri which would strengthen us much more than losing Ox would weaken us.
With no CL this season, that's good money for someone who probably isn't first choice at right or left wingback.
Apparently we've had an €80m offer for Sandro knocked back. Conte needs to accept defeat and look elsewhere.
I know the market's crazy, but that's still a huge amount of money to spend on one wingback. He's good, but is he that much better than Alonso/ players you could get for less than half that?

We would've let him go for 20m to a club that qualified in the CL, AKA, you guys. (That was his release clause)

Chelsea saved us (somewhat) by offering 32m for him.

Kante for 32m is criminal. Selling for 20m... ye gods...
Ahh right didn't realise there was a clause in there, we still should have matched Chelsea's offer.

If you can afford it why wouldnt you go for the best you can get?

I think you needed to do more, because he idolised Makele, and once Chelsea came knocking... that was it!

It's a good thing that Chelsea didn't make CL that year, or we would've been taken to the cleaners.

I think it says a lot about how good he is if Tightarse FC are bidding 80m for him and Juventus are knocking us back.
