Everything I've read said that Tony Henry was most keen (our chief scout), Sullivan was willing to make the purchase, but Bilic said no because he didn't want to spend a large portion of the transfer fee on someone not tried and tested.

With all due respect (as you had a good season), but you're not Real Madrid. You finished 2nd in the league 10 points off the pace, were knocked out in the group stage of the CL, won no silverware, and there are honestly no players in world football that would improve your starting XI? Do you not have ambitions of going deeper in the CL?

This transfer strategy also assumes that the teams around you don't improve their starting XIs/see natural growth from within, and that your current XI all maintain their form/improve from last season. Maybe not deliberately so but it's myopic and misguidedly arrogant.

As I said the other day, if you're not moving forwards in this league then you're moving backwards. There is no room for treading water and hoping the status quo is maintained. Put it this way, I bet the rest of the league are hoping this article is right and Tottenham are just chipping around looking at youth/depth players this summer.

You missed the point. No one is saying that we have the best 11 in world football or that there aren't players that could go straight into out first 11. Of course there are, but they are way out of our price range. Levy simply isn't going to break the wage structure or spend 40-50m+ for that player. We have to continue to be smart, and like Gero says, add players with a similar profile to Son, one who is young and might come in initially as a rotation option, but has enough talent to break into the first team. This is why I think Ross Barkley makes perfect sense for us, not least because he's heading into the last year of his contract. I really hope this one happens. And it's not about being arrogant at all, it's about being sensible and recognising our shortcomings.

Regardless, our first 11 isn't really the problem. It's the lack of quality depth. In the FA Cup final Chelsea could bring on Hazard and Fabregas from the bench. We had to make do with the likes of N'Koudou and Janssen.

Also the same thing about standing still, treading water and us being quiet was said last off season. Yet ultimately we only signed one player that went into our first 11 in Wanyama and we still improved by 1 position and 16 points. I suspect something similar will happen this window.

Lukaku wouldn't agree terms with United before any bid is made by Chelsea if he wanted to play for Chelsea. That just doesn't happen with big money transfers.

Chelsea would also simply match the wages. To pretend it's a financial thing is silly and I'm not sure why the agent fees would change if a deal is matched.

To a lot of players it is financial. Heck, Ronaldo has been off to join another club at least 3 times in the last few years because he wanted more money.

The offer has only reputably been put at 200k, Chelsea would happily match that if they are happy to match 75m.
