Yes fees are exorbitant these days, selling to rivals inflation, home grown player inflation, TV rights inflation, you're buying our crown jewel inflation etc, but imo a lot of these factors were not applicable for Morata except TV rights to a lesser extent.

Imo you can justify what you pay for said player based on certain variables. I'm firmly in the Man Utd camp on their striker search on this one.

Think you're underselling Morata a fair bit though. He's certainly of a better pedigree than Lukaku, has shown a fair bit when it matters (late in UCL tournaments) and has almost a decade of football ahead of him. A fairly successful loan spell at Juventus followed by 20 goals in 43 appearances for the European champions this year puts him ahead of almost every other striker his age or younger.

Lukaku has scored well in the EPL, fair enough, but Morata has the higher ceiling for me.

Hindsight hero? This is my post from deadline day 2016 when you signed him:
Great, well done to you, but why the deflection?

Lukaku vs Morata was the original discussion before your Sissoko deflection.

Anyways Lukaku>>>>>Morata

lol what deflection? I wasn't even in the lukaka vs morata discussion.

I already explained myself, don't need to again:
sick of Spurs fans crying poor about the big clubs inflating the market when they are just as responsible as anyone else.

I don't think he does

He's never lead the line at any of those clubs, he's always been 3rd/4th choice being fed by far superior midfields/other forwards surrounding him compared to Lukaku. Now he's expected to stand up and be numero uno, he's been extremely sheltered/nurtured his whole career, hence me being skeptical on him at the moment.

Lukaku has lead the line with distinction at clubs far more inferior than Moratas clubs, he had world beaters like Chris Brunt and James Morrison feeding him the ball at West Brom yet he went at 17 goals from 35 in his year there and that was 4-5 years ago at a far younger age than what Morata is now.

Imo Lukaku improves with better players around him at Utd (no offence Everton fans), while Chelsea's midfield is quality, I'm not sure Morata will have a support forward around him as good as what he had at Juve/RM, he will have to learn to play on his own there, Lukaku has played on his own for 5 seasons already at inferior clubs to Man Utd.

Anyways.. That's where I sit on it.

Paying 60m for previous clubs squad player

Yeah but I'm the one who's having a massive whinge apparently on inflation

I heard burley say today that we don't know whether morata can perform in the bpl, whereas luk is a known quality.

Does he not get that ATM bpl is an inferior league to the Spain and Italy?

Even if they were in some magical world superior leagues he hasn't exactly excelled in either of those leagues. He has started like 40 games in the last three years.

He has a massive task now but he is a quality player IMO.

Theres a reason why Conte has bought him twice and chased him hard in another window in between, happy to back his judgement.

Not fussed about the Lukalu v Morata debate, both sets of fans are happy so thats all that really matters.

This transfer has not caused any difference to player cost inflation. Thats just ridiculous.

To be fair, this phrase is irrelevant when it comes to Madrid and Barca players. James is in that category yet would get a start at almost every club in the world outside those 2. Sanchez and Ozil were in that category too (once Suarez and Bale were signed respectively, Barca and Madrid were happy to let them go as they weren't best XI) yet we broke our transfer record twice for players that were essentially "squad players". And this was 3-4 years ago before the TV money hit. Really average argument.

Who is AU? Adelaide United?

He used to play at Panionios (red and blue team in my avatar) but moved before I could remember what he was like. Sounds like he hasn't been too bad. 79 appearances over 3 years. The Greek league is a fairly physical league so I expect him not to be a pushover. He did join AEK when they were in the second division though, so I'm not sure what to think.

It's the style not the quality.
For me Morata just edged out Lukaku as the better player but Lukaku will have the better season in the EPL. I think Morata will struggle TBH

Lol, please

If Man Utd really wanted him, they would've paid up. He wasn't worth the fee and it seems RM was happy to sell (ie not really a required player), when you're the best team in the world, you can do things your own way.

Lol, please dude. His Juve league record says otherwise and he played heaps of football upfront with Tevez or Dybala. Wonder what RM will have to shell out for Mbappe or Kane then when they come calling then if you think his strike rate was so good?

He's had one above average season, a season where RM arguably had their greatest ever season in their history (winning the league and CL). Imo he should've went to a Villarreal/Valencia/Sevilla and became their main man before a big move like this.
Morata will outscore Kane next season.

Morata's team also didn't get relegated to the championship and desperately need the money. Madrid didn't need to sell him so could demand a higher price.

There is no possible scenario where you can argue that Sissoko for 30m was better value for money than Morata for 58 imo.
Don't think anyone is saying a deadline day deal for Sissoko for 30m was good value. But it's an absolute joke to try and say deals like that is why English clubs have to pay exhorbotent transfer fees.

So a deal made by the 6th richest club in the league has impact on what the 1st or 2nd richest does? Guess we could pass the buck down to Bournemouth who paid 15m for an uncapped English winger earlier in the window ;)
