It's flawed logic. Different strokes for different folks. There are factors other than pure talent/footballing ability that determine the cost of a player. In this instance, he's English, he was at a wealthy club who would prefer not to sell to rivals, and there was strong competition for his signature from other wealthy clubs. However, once he's in the squad he'll be judged on merit and ability like everyone else. That's what this discussion is or should be based on.

We sat here all last season listening to Arsenal supporters criticize his performances in that role in what was a weaker team and weaker midfield, so I'll take their word for it. Maybe that will change now he's at Liverpool, maybe he'll be a better fit for our system or Klopp will be able to elevate his game, but looking at past performances it's perfectly reasonable to suggest he's a fair way down the pecking order for a starting berth in our midfield 3 at this stage. I hope he proves me wrong, but an argument based on past performance holds far more water than one based on 'he cost a lot of money therefore he's your best midfielder now'.

Think it's just a nominal. He's not contracted to us, just a scholar. English club takes him and we'd be looking at a tribunal fee but I don't think that would apply here. He'd be asking a decent wage though I'd imagine.

Really? It's a smart signing imo if it comes off. He's experienced, scores goals (he got 15 in the PL last season) and he wont be demanding a start every week. Arguably played his best football under Bielsa as well so he should fit Poch's system, and remember Poch doesn't mind a target man type, he did good things with Lambert.

This is always the way we should have gone when it comes to Kane's backup imo. A young guy is unlikely to sign on in a crucial part of their development stage, whereas older guys are more content to play second fiddle.
