Barca decisions have been very strange in the past few years.

Selling Coutinho was always going to be a good move for Liverpool, was surprising how many were dead against the idea.

We would have won the CL if we didn't sell him.

Or you would have been knocked out earlier.

Our lack of midfield and attacking options severely hamstrung us at the tail end of the season. We had to bring on Lallana in the final after Ramos took out Salah and he had played about 180 minutes of football in 6 months leading up to the final. Pretty confident we would have seen a different result if Coutinho was playing in the CL final.

I think you'll find most weren't against selling Coutinho but doing it in the summer window post WC.

We didn't replace coutinho, that was the issue selling in Jan when all the replacements were coming in the summer window.

With a £140m+ offer, and a player wanting to leave, you absolutely have to sell. It was the right decision for Liverpool.

Agree. The deal shouldn't have been done until post season though, selling key players mid season is a no-no. We really did need him in the CL plus he was ineligble himself to play CL for Barca.

He faked back injuries to avoid our games, then was magically fit to play and score for Brazil and then "injured" when he came back.

He wouldn't have played for us if we kept him. He went on strike, we don't want players like that around the club.

Players have the ability to force a move when they want to. Who knows what lengths he would’ve gone to in order to get to Barca in January.

Refusing to play, bringing down the group, a constant distraction at press conferences and player interviews, training by himself etc. Just some of the possibilities that could have played out between the January and summer windows.

£140m pounds, you just can’t say no to that. And it funded van Dijk. Liverpool have clearly benefited overall.

No one can conclusively say if he would have changed the result in the champions league. It’s all hypothetical. The unfortunate errors by Karius and the injury to Salah were far more influential than anything Coutinho may or may not have done.

He tried to force a move in winter and was denied. We would have gotten the 140m for him in summer and he was our best player in the first half of the season despite wanting a transfer in the winter. In hindsight I believe Klopp wouldn't have sanctioned the move if he was aware of a possible midfield injury crisis. It has worked out in the end but probably cost us a CL title with having to play a clearly unfit Lallana for most of the final.

But it’s not as simple as just a straight swap out for Lallana. There’s also the very likely scenario that there’s no van Dijk in January either.

Van Dijk had nothing to do with the Coutinho transfer, that was publically stated by all parties. Klopp was allowed to retain Coutinho until the end of the season but decided to let him go in January.

And it's not just Lallana. We only had 3 fit midfielders for the last month of the season all of whom had to play every minute of every game. They were tired and wouldn't have played anywhere near as much had Coutinho been retained until season's end. And Lallana just didn't have the legs to get back and help out the midfielders like Salah did creating a snowball effect.

For me selling Coutinho was the right choice - but done in the summer window.

Klopp has a bridge he'd like to sell you.

This is going nowhere. What’s done is done, and ifs and buts aren’t candy and nuts...

The Higuian-Morata loan swap sounds like its heating up. Do it.

I would only approve of a 6-month loan deal for Higuain. Even if it doesn't work we wouldn't have lost much.

Otherwise it looks like being Sheva Mk 2.

Higuain is a declining force. His movement isn't world-class anymore and he's a less precise finisher than he used to be.

That said, he's more mobile than Giroud (not saying much because he is slowing down), works harder off the ball than Morata, his finishing is still much better than the other two and his movement is IMO still better than Morata's. He'll probably score against non-Top 6 sides but I wouldn't expect much in the bigger games.

A week or so before the window opens. Klopp has been cryptic and has suggested we might dip into the market. Cant see it myself though as everything is going so swimmingly right now, why change anything.

Appreciate the update.

I too noticed the discussion has moved on from the Coutinho transfer, someone had to pull it back to Liverpool. ;)
