People posting tweets about how bad the price tag is. A couple of people when I read their posts that he's suspect in the air and is not a first choice CB for a championship calibre team. Thought those comments were a bit harsh.

Ummm...

That tweet was a joke. Seems that got lost on a few in this thread, relax people and have a laugh.

Statistically Ake is one of the weakness CBs in the league in the air. Thats not a dig at him, it's just not his strength and as long as he the right partner he'll be fine.

Not sure about not being good enough, I'd take him at Chelsea and 40m is a steal. Seems City fans are divide, one thinks he'll be their 2nd best CB, the other thinks he's been signed as a back up.

Is anyone butchering him?

The tweet that chef posted was the guy joking about his own tweet when Liverpool bought VVD saying he's very overrated and they could get Dunk for 1/10 of the price.

Aside from that, I think it's mostly been people saying that they don't think he's a starter for City? Which I think is fair.

Wasn't referring to the tweet you posted I did get that part.

Great deal for Pool, but for Lewis personally I think it's crazy. Young LB choosing to go to the club with one of the best LBs in the world.
I guess the lure of a big club winning trophies and working under Klopp would be the draw as you're right, he's never getting past Robbo into the first team.

But he could feature in 15 or so games and be a part of something special perhaps. Plus probably a pay rise.

He would get games in the cup and rotations with Robbo.

Yeah I don't think it's a bad deal at all.

Robertson can't play every game etc.

Would be a good buy for not a lot of money in PL terms. I'd be wanting a bit more than 10 million though.

I'd be surprised if we went higher or even at that price since he didn't play much under Potter and then the current market.

My hope is we go for someone like Kipre from Wigan as a cheaper alternative as a backup in any case.

He wasn't playing because he's no good, he was more pushed to the bench because of the system.

He could start for any of the teams in the mid to lower part of the comp and perform very well.

10 million + add ons for performance targets would be a good deal.

The thing is I don't think he'd start ahead of Ogbonna and Diop, think we need upgrades at the full backs first in any case.

But it sounds like Moyes likes him, was a schoolboy at Everton I think.

Big, strong, fantastic in the air and a threat at set pieces. Only 28 still.

I think he'll have a few suitors for his services now it seems he's off. Time will tell who.

Saying Ake is weak in the air isnt a dig at him, hes very short for a CB so he cant help it.

It's also fairly irrelevant.

It's not hoof ball from the 80's, most modern football is played along the ground, not continual long balls like the old days. There's indirect free kicks and corners, sure, but thats more about positioning than being tall and great in the air.

Nearly all of the best defenders are ball playing ones these days.

You'd much rather your CB be quick and good in the tackle than good in the air these days.

There's plenty of tall, great in the air defenders that are absolute liabilities with their pace and when the ball is on the ground. I know which i'd rather.

Its not irrelevant at all, like when we play Azpi as a CB he gets targeted with crosses to his opponent in play and deadball situations. Smart managers will target him, thats just how it is.

All true but Ake is one of the worst CBs in Europe for winning aerial duels which indicates his positioning also isnt great. Its ok if you pair him with someone whos good in the air but can see him struggling against direct teams.

Azpi is a fullback being played out of position.

He's being targeted because he's a fullback being played out of position.

A little different to Ake I would of thought who's shown he's a quality CB.

Ake is a similar height to Marquinhos

I believe as a manager you could cope with a player that's not that good in the air as the modern game has progressed to more on the deck play so to have someone quick is essential trust me i'd rather that did you see how bergwijn made Maguire look like a witches hat. Goals from set pieces seem to be a rarity these days.

I would also imagine the only manager you'd have to worry about with those plays is moyes who wants 50 crosses a game.

And thats not true at all, Apzi has played as a CB for us a heap. Was part of a premiership winning defence there and the only weakness he has there is a lack of height.

Liverpool had the most headed goals in the league last year - 19.

Man City (11), Chelsea (9), Tottenham (8), Utd (5), Arsenal (5).

Most of them hover at 10% or below 10% of their total goals.

For the 1 or 2 that Ake might let in a year that others might get, I'll take the fact he's better than most of the other CB's in the league at preventing the other 90% of goals.

That's where other players can fill the void. Like tall CDMs etc.
