Sounds like FIFA wont give the go ahead for Messi to unilaterally terminate and join another club. No point fighting in civil court about it if Barca refuse and FIFA refuse the transfer.
No-one is going to sign him on a free while there is a risk the Spanish courts or FIFA could come back eventually and say he was contracted and the full buyout fee applies.

Messi will need to go to the courts and/or FIFA before a move can take place to get a clear decision made. Probably FIFA in the first case.

Or a club will come to an arrangement with Barca. How much Barca would accept will probably depend on how strong this clause is.

barca are absolutely right to do everything possible to hold onto him. they should be demanding his release clause.

They should just take a good deal. Messi is at a point of no return. He wants to go for totally understandable reasons, and could leave for free next year. Barcelona urgently needs money for their rebuild and Messi won't be part of the team long term. I think if City would offer Neymar's transfer fee + 1 euro, they'll let him go. City can sit and wait and may be able to lower the price.

FIFA more importantly as Barca holds his registration until the end of his contract in 2021 as it stands today.

Yeah if Barca can convince someone to pay 200m they'll be pretty happy. That would be a good result and like others have said probably what they may have been playing for all along with Messi past his best and costing them a fortune with his mammoth contract.

i think they can still keep him if bartomeu resigns, victor font comes in/wins and xavi is made coach. i believe barca have a rule where if the president/board resign they have to pay off debts themselves, but i could be wrong on that.

Problem with FIFA is that if they rule he is out of contract and the Spanish courts later rule he isn't.

No club is going to leave themselves hanging like that.

Likelihood is that the clause isn't clear and neither side would be confident going into a court case.

A deal with Barca is the best way to avoid it. If the clause is legit they won't be able to demand too much. If the clause isn't they can demand the world.

Psg might. Then just pay the transfer fee if they have to?

ESPN] Neymar & Di Maria have contacted Messi asking him to join PSG. The operation is feasible, having considerably reduced the payroll with the departures of Silva, Meunier & Cavani. ManCity are offering Messi a 5yr contract, which would see him move to partner club, NYCFC, after 3yrs in the PL.

Also means messis doesn't have to sign an eight year contract with an obligation to live in the USA.

Bartomeu said he'd resign if Messi stays, but I think he's just doing that for show. Let's say Messi stays and Font & Xavi come in, then there's still that old group of players on expensive contracts who are difficult to move on and replace.

All I know is that at the end of the presidential term, the board members need to pay off the debts. You'd think that is also the case if they'd resign.

Pretty much all reports say that the clause said he had to inform the club in May if he wanted to terminate his contract unilaterally with no compensation payable. The reports coming out (and the copy of the supposed leaked fax) say that Messi still wants to use this because the season was extended and he believes that the clause can still be used "in the spirt of the deal".

To me, that seems unlikely to cut it with FIFA. If he wanted to do that he should have renegotiated the extension of the contract termination clause at the end of May or at least informed Barca that he was planning on attempting to use it at the end of the extended season.

Paying the unilateral termination clause enforced by La Liga (630m pounds) or by agreement with Barcelona seem like the only way he's realistically getting out of Barca. And really, in the middle of a pandemic, do you want to be a player that's complaining about being the best paid player in the world at Barca honouring his contract? I don't see much sympathy for him in the legal system.

I don't think either side would want to go through the courts.

A quick decision from FIFA might help, and from either sides perspective that will severely strengthen or weaken their claims to a transfer fee.

They might gamble, but more than likely a compromise will be found.

Personally if Barca were demanding more than £20m I'd try and get the clause and the free transfer enforced legally. Our execs have coveted Messi for years though, and might be prepared to pay more just to get the job done.

The 8 year , American contract sounds a bit silly. Not sure if he will go for that?

Barca dont need to do anything, hes under contract until 2021. No need for them to go to court.

Messi could ask the Spanish courts for a ruling on whether the get out clause in his transfer has been lawfully executed.

If he does and they say yes, Barca gets nothing. Messi is a free agent.

If he does and they say no, Barca have all the power.

It's a big risk for either side to take, and one I suspect they'd both rather avoid.

Its up to Messi to convince FIFA that he should be allowed to use an expired clause to end his contract. As things currently stand Messi is a Barca player until 2021 unless someone pays his buyout fee or pays a fee which Barca agree to in order to end his contract. The risk is with Messi, he could face a FIFA ban if he persists with trying to unilaterally break his contact.

FIFA ain't going to ban Messi from playing football

Barcelona will cave, the fans and footballing world is with Messi, it's a PR nightmare for Barcelona to hold Messi to his contract or to an unreasonable price tag.

Not sure why anyone would want anything to do with the States in the future with the way things are.

I think three years from now things won't be quite so problematic as now. It's not like they've suffered a nuclear attack..
