I kinda feel like Arsenal did it on purpose. Tried to do a deal and AM were just like nah bro, release clause b*tch. So Arsenal went away and were like, ok let's wait until the last hour and just activate the release clause and fu** AM in the arse. Haha

That would be quite petty from Arsenal considering the release clause it self if fairly low for a player of Partey’s quality. Kind of insulting in the first place trying to negotiate a lower price when there’s already a good deal available.

I imagine the real reason they did it that way because the Partey signing was reliant on getting Torreira’s and Guendouzi’s wages off the books. Had they informed Atletico Madrid they could have pulled out of the Torreira deal so they didn’t inform them to give them any leverage.

Arsenal came to AM to try and bargain and sort something out with money and a player or money over time. AM just kept pointing at the release clause, and I suppose this is how just relying on a release clause and not coming to the table can backfire.

Perhaps a bit strong, I was just going off the knowledge that AM are pretty angry with about how it all went down on deadline day.

Torreria will do well there IMO. Man just doesn't stop running, wish him nothing but the best.

I think we were obviously trying to fit in Aouar aswell but seeing as we couldn’t get him we may as well Splash it on Partey.

Where have you read this? All I've seen is that people are disappointed that there wasn't even a courtesy call that the release clause was going to be activated.

Given that it's Partey's representatives that technically have to activate it and that he's been at the club since he's been a kid, I don't think that a heads up is too much to ask

Atletico weren’t exactly being too amicable about the torreira situation either, didn’t want to try work any options out and they were being hard on the loan terms as well, they had to know this was a very real possibility of happening

Very much agree with this.

Whilst it’s obvious for all Parteys (sorry I had to) that leaving it this late was less than ideal, Atletico still have come out of this transaction in a decent enough position.

Arsenal clearly wanted to negotiate either the amount for Partey or an instalment plan for his clause (neither of which Atletico are obliged to recede on). Arsenal also wanted to sell Torreira, not loan him (or at least have an obligation to buy on his loan deal).

Again, Atletico aren’t obliged to budge on that. However they’ve acquired Torreria on their terms (he’s good at his role and as mentioned earlier, he will likely thrive under Simeone in La Liga). Not all South American footballers dominate in England, they tend to perform much better in Spain, Italy etc.

So AM now have €50m in the bank (again, it should’ve happened earlier) and have paid a nominal loan fee for Torreria whilst getting to assess him for 12 months prior to making a decision on the option to buy clause next summer. Not bad at all.
