That’s what I was getting at, all that talent, that over that 3 years has needed replacing, or will do, and done without fees coming in to help pay for it. Add in the English club tax clubs put on the top, and knowing Arsenal are desperate to climb back up and it is an expensive exercise.

But with fees coming in you may have been able to buy a replacement and then have money left over to also upgrade somewhere else. Like getting Partey and then also being able to get Aouar rather than having to choose. Also meaning that youth from the academy can also be drip fed in when they deserve it or are needed rather than becoming a more critical element because of squad neglect.

Yes it’s pretty damning when laid out like that, even accounting for an outlier here and there. It’s a systemic problem, dating back to Wenger’s final years where he tried to spin it as “ideal” or something of that nature that players run down their contracts like this.


As much as I don’t like the owners, it should be pointed out that they have made some significant investments in the last few years to purchase players. Problem is, Arsenal overall have been quite poor at spending that money.

Gabriel, Tierney and Partey are obviously the standouts.

Aside from that, where to begin. Pepe it’s been well documented that we overpaid for. The Ozil contract is self explanatory. Failing to sell Alexis for £60m with 11 months on his contract. Luiz for £14m including the super agent intermediary fees. Eroding worth of Saliba, a £28m purchase. Doing th same with Guendouzi Willian given 3 years as a 32 year old on £250k a week. Mind boggling stuff.

Including Welbeck is moronic. Who would give money for an injury prone journeyman.

From memory they were losing others around the time so couldn't afford to lose another star player so paid up big to keep him

Stats don't do him justice. Against United he had a 0% save %. The goals conceded were a penalty in the 100th minute, an own goal from poor defending and a deflected shot from Rashford (where have I heard Rashford and deflected shot before). Yet according to the stats the expected goals was 1.9
