You were the highest conceding team in the top 4 and conceded 1 less than we did last season and none of our blokes could defend.
Liverpool's fill ins were sturdier. Varane is a much needed purchase.

Chelsea conceded four goals in their CL run (a new record for European Champions) and conceded eight less league goals than United despite Frank having them extremely disorganised at the back for a large chunk of the season. I don’t think Varane all of sudden elevates United to Chelsea’s level. Pool, Chelsea and City are still well above United at the back.
I feel like United fans are in for a bit of a surprise this season. Pool will bounce back with a fit squad and Chelsea are a different beast under Tuchel. There’s lots of talk about them challenging for the league. I don’t see it. I’m tipping them to slide to 4th.

I think the thing about our defence is that while it's maybe not got huge individual brilliance, the system as a whole and the players in it work together perfectly.

That's mainly because you have Kante, not because your defence is good. Liverpool definitely isn't as good as ours defensively. Better going forward though.
