would be insignificant compared to the melts if City somehow still fail to win the champions league after signing grealish/kane

Ah yes Bobby Bonilla …think the Mets are paying another guy as well not as long as Bobby
I have no idea how that makes sense? From what I gathered, they owed Bonilla nearly 6 million in 2000. Instead of paying him out they decided to do a deal that meant paying him nothing for 11 years. And then in 2011 until 2035 they would pay him 1.19 million a year. That's over 25 million?

So you've gone from owing someone 6 million to 25 million. I just dont get it.

Wouldn't you want to do what is best for your career?

If you signed a contract with your employer and they went in a direction you didn't like/weren't happy with, would you stick around?
I'd ask to leave. But i'd be showing up to work until such time that happened.
And if it doesn't, well that's how a contract works.
I don't expect to be sacked just because someone changes their mind in those 6 years. 2 way street.

Yes, that’s what the agreement is. July 1st every year is referred to as “Bobby Bonilla Day” in the Baseball world, that is the day the Mets pay Bobby $1.19M. Until 2035, lol.

I had to Google it but the other Met player TheGreatBarryB was talking about would be Darryl Strawberry. https://www.districtofcolumbiataxat...ction-of-darryl-strawberrys-baseball-annuity/

Yeah, basically the Mets were going to pay Strawberry in the 2030’s, even though he retired in 1999 Lol.

They agreed to defer first payment for 10 years. The owners were (or thought they were) earning shitload from Bernie Madoff investments. So they deferred for 10 years and agreed to pay him a guaranteed 8% interest for the full 25 years!! So that $6mill deferred for 10 years at Madoff rates would’ve meant it would have grown to $20m (I think). Crazy!

the mets were a victim of bernie madoff so didnt pay out his contract in a lump sum but would do portions with interest with all this new money they were going to get. you can guess how it worked out

Yeah, I probably needed to add that context. I was reading that by 2011, the Mets were so broke that Bonilla was literally the highest paid salary they had. Crazines.

the other fun bit is that the family who owned the mets at the time was one of those who made money from the scheme

Like the way they made their money?
Was probably a bit more the "blue arseholes" part of it that clued me in that it was meant as abuse rather than a general comment.

As I said as long as it's not personal or tasteless go the hack.

Me personally im not interested in a tit for tat and it sucks the fun out of this place.
