Say you sign someone for £100m on a 5 year contract, he costs £20m a year in amortisation.
Say after 3 years, he signs a 2 year extension.
You've already paid £60m of the £100m fee so his unamortised value is £40m. That then gets spread over the new term his contract, 4 years. So his new cost will be £10m a year over the 4 years.

Red Bull Leeds confirmed.
I know some managers like working with players but Marsch is taking the piss surely. Adams, Aaronson, Kristensen and now Wober in 2 windows.
2 of the Red Bull signings have been good though, especially Adams the goat. Kristensen has been meh. Hopefully Wober is a good LB so Pascal can play CB.
Really don't get why Arsenal want him. He isn't an out an out striker, he is more of a winger that best plays on the left. Same position as Martinelli.
With Martinelli playing so well at the moment, to me it makes little sense spending that much on a backup. It will be Pepe signing all over a again.
Also buyer beware, he plays in a shit league. Too many red flags to spend that much.
And League One Liam to the bench…
Hopefully. I mean I still love him, but he’s bad more than he’s good and it’s obvious Pascal & Koch would be our best CB pairing at the moment.
