Why would he not want to go to City?

Perhaps he has questions on how he would fit into their team. Rodri owns the position Rice normally plays. Stones did a great job alongside him this season. Phillips and Kovacic also play the DM role.

He would probably play nearly every week for Arsenal.

Nothing to gain for us to put in a formal bid (if we have) without first receiving some sort of confirmation from Rice that he would be prepared to come.

Well that’s not quite the bidding war West Ham have been hoping for. Both offers from City and Arsenal are very significant and reasonable prices, I imagine though the structure and timing of payments along with the feasibility of the bonuses are going to be pivotal. Ultimately though Rice’s choice of destination will be the deciding factor.

Think that'll be rejected as it doesn't get to 100M, think Arsenal will probably go 90 + 10 next.

Read that Pep doesn't want Rice as a DM, but more a replacement for Gundogan as an AM.

Surely he's not spunking 100m on a player and then trying to move him to another position.

People just called Rice a DM 2 years ago and he's turned himself into a world class box to box midfielder since.

Considering he started out as a CB, I wouldn't put it past him to become an AM, he's shown he can score when he gets in the box enough.

And if there is a manager to further develop him its Pep. Hes wasted as just a DM.

Rice is not an AM, that wouldn't make sense.

Not sure where West Ham can go from here. They need to sell the player and there isn't a bidding war like they hoped. The best they can hope for is improved payment terms. Keeping him would not be an ideal scenario as he'll go for 60m next summer. Think a 90m straight up bid from Arsenal gets it done with a reasonable payment timeframe (over 3 years not 5 years etc).

Disagree with that, you wouldn't have called TAA a midfielder before this season and look at him now. More depends on the team / formation, the way West Ham play under Moyes with 40pc ball, it doesn't makes sense to play him as a ten, for City it'd be different.

Rodri and Stones aren't going to play every game regardless so he'll still play as a DM every now and then.

That's a little different. TAA played midfield up until his debut season.

Can't see City looking at him as an attacking mid. Dribbling in tight spaces is hardly his strength. He has 10 goals/10 assists in 204 PL games. They'll need a KDB successor in the next couple of years also so imagine they will have someone else attacking midfielder wise in mind.

Arsenal seems the ideal fit for him with Xhaka moving on and possibly Partey too. He'll be their midfield general.

Was that from a good source?

He's proved himself as a top DM, can step in at CB when required, and can surge into attacking positions. But I'm not sure he has the creativity of a full time AM.

Someone in the know on the West Ham side who I've followed for a few years.

I would also look at his pressing ability and say that as an AM could be a serious weapon. Creativity / passing etc. can always develop.

I think the stumbling block for Arsenal will be the add ons right? A lot of add ons are trophy based right? Win the PL, get 5 million, win the CL, get 5 million etc.

But hitting those add ons for Arsenal are very unlikely whereas with City, it's nailed on.

Balance a couple of trophy based with personal add ons and it will be fine. The main battle Arsenal has is installments.
