It’s ridiculous a player can earn £700k a-week to kick a ball around in Saudi Arabia when a top end AFL player earns that in a year.
In front of a couple of thousand of people paying 10-20 bucks each to watch them.
I guess it's a good thing we don't have a government run by a royal family that will happily plunder government money away on an unsustainable competition all for the purpose of image building.
As the economy of Saudi Arabia is about the same size as ours and they have 10 million more people the person who loses out big time from the sportswashing is the everyday person in Saudi. The money has to come from somewhere.
While personally I'd love it if our government funded a PL standard competition here in Australia (and we are much better setup for it with our season aligning with Europe / sporting infrastructure) it really would not be acceptable for our government to commit so much money to it.
This is why I can only see the Saudi league being destined for failure. Someone, at some stage will pipe up about the money being squandered on it from within the government.
