Paulsen was named the A-League goalkeeper of the year. But so was Joe Gauci last season. He moved to Villa and is probably 5th or 6th in line for the gloves.

I'm not seeing a swarm of young talent being recruited from the A-League to get a game in the top European leagues.
Gauci is villa's second or third keeper.

He's definitely not second keeper. Martinez missed a few games and Olsen stood in each time. Gauci hasn't played a single game for Villa. When Villa played Sheff U they had Robin Olsen and James Wright on the bench.

The point is that you can be a star in the A-League but a nobody if you switch to one of the top European leagues.

He was on the bench on final day and will likely get chances in the cups or Europe.

Point is players are moving direct from the A league to premier league clubs on a regular basis now. How many league two or one players do that?

Brexit has just meant the young players from Australia can get work permits a shit load easier now. Premier league clubs just hoover up cheap young players because they can, if one out of 50 makes it they are ahead. It is zero reflection on the quality of the A league.

Do Scottish clubs also just hoover up cheap young players because they can? Belgian?

Few stories about Kompany taking Stones to Munich.

Big doubts over Ederson, Walker, KDB as well.

Some legends of the club maybe on the way out.

Premier league clubs steal players from them. It is a food chain. Would much prefer to keep a Ben Doak than sign a Tilio that's for sure.

I think you've misunderstood my question.

If A-League players are moving to those leagues too, how do you justify it when those clubs can't afford to just hoover up players?

Outwith Celtic and Rangers the majority of Scottish clubs sign players for frees. St Mirren are signing Bacchus and Strain for instance instead of conference level players out of contract in England. Bacchus does well for St Mirren and gets a dream move to Mansfield Town!

And Yengi is now a Championship player with Portsmouth, Burgess a PL player with Ipswich, Baccus could well go on a similar trajectory. McGree, Glover and Silvera at Boro, etc.

Plenty of clubs who can't afford to just spray at players who are looking to the A-League and having a high strike rate of success.

If Gauci was on the bench when Martinez was unavailable then he's not second choice. With the Villa goalies right now it will be Olsen that gets games in the cups.

Goalkeeper is a specialist position. Premier League clubs recruit and retain goalies who are content to never get a game, as opposed to non-playing outfield players who tend to get moved on. They'll take them from anywhere including the EFL. James Shea got a regular game in League One and Two but couldn't get on the field for Luton once they got back into the top flight. Adam Davies played a lot of League One and Championship but could hardly make the bench for Sheff U.

Which is why I said second or third choice.. I don't think there's much between him and Olsen.
