Good to see Phillips moving on…head scratcher why he went to City in the first place from a football perspective.
Maybe not as first choice but I think there was (and still is) a spot there for him to get plenty of minutes behind Rodri.

He came over injured (or got injured shortly after joining) and never really got an opportunity to play after that.

He did look really bad when he did get the odd chance, and he never really showed that he could cope with our style of play.

Maybe with a bit more patience from Pep and more opportunity he might have proven himself, but he was never really given that opportunity, even in junk time at the end of matches.

Bigger head scratcher to me was why he didn't leave in the summer when it was made pretty clear he wouldn't be getting off the bench much.

Phillips probably stayed because he thought he would get more game time, but it would have been a kick in the guts to not even get off the bench in the Arsenal and Villa games when Rodri was out. Sometimes a manager just doesn't like a player. It was a little strange of Pep to publically call him out for being overweight.

It's a good move for him and West Ham. He can bolster his claim for an England squad place ahead of the Euros. Hammers can rotate him with Alvarez, Soucek, JWP in the defensive mid positions.

It was made pretty obvious in the summer that he wouldn't be playing much.

Rodri missing was as good a chance as he was going to get, but he had an audition before those games (can't remember the game, maybe Newcastle in the cup) and was awful.

It was a bit weird the overweight criticism, and I think once Pep made his mind up fairly early in the piece it was always going to be difficult.

Still, he earned a bit and has 5 medals at home. Hopefully he does well at West Ham and earns a good permanent move in the summer.

Majority of the fee from that graphic was for Dragusin. Might have changed in the last couple of days but Celtic had the third highest transfer to the UK this window after buying a winger from Austria for 3 million. They will have to end up loosening FFP restrictions if it is restricting everyone. Players will end up revolting with no movement.

or it regulates transfers fees a bit. It will take time, but it will find it's sweet spot.

Good article on the athletic explaining it being a mix of tighter controls around money, but also some analysis into how little January spending sees performance uptick after the window closes
