And I'm not suggesting they need a super quick central defender just someone who can outrun their shadow.

Micah Richards would probably the best option for them.
Particularly with the possibility of that 6+5 thing coming in.

Tottenham is the best by a MILE in that lot. All they need is a LW/LB (depends where Bale plays). Aston Villa are gonna fall behind. Replacing Barry with Sidwell . Still no new RB in. A squad of 15 with the Intertoto Cup coming up to im led to believe. Gonna be some very tired boys come the end of the year if the squad doesnt atleast double in size.

Too earlt for Portsmouth, Newcastle. I still think another 20 million pound signing is coming in for Man City. Probably a DCM like Veleso

Aston Villa

Like Embers said, the squad was the smallest in the Premiership last season. (fact)
and now Villa have already lost - Luke Moore, Carson, Mellberg, Sorensen, Barry (likely) and Berger.

With there also being a very good chance that Shaun Moloney might leave as well.

And Villa really haven't signed anybody yet. Curtis Davies was with the side last season and him being included doesn't mean any +1 to the players in from last season.

So the smallest squad from last season minus five players. Even last season with the squad size, 3 or 4 injuries to starting/key players and Villa were gone. without the replacements of quality and without anything resembling squad quantity. so that was bad enough and Villa were very fortunate with injuries. very lucky not to have been exposed.

and now.... five players less. Villa need more players in their squad than last season which unfortunately probably won't happen. so Villa will be relying on a ridiculously lucky injury run again. imagine Villa with half of West Ham's injuries? they'd be forced to play 12 year olds. Villa need to bring in about double what they lose. and that would mean double figures. almost unprecedented numbers. the number of required is as it is though - and not even close to an exaggeration. Villa won't sign that many though. or more so MON won't. and then he'll note next season every chance he gets how small Villa's squad is.

anyway, to the list of realistic/likely targets who I wouldn't be unhappy to see Villa sign.

Naylor is rubbish from what I hear. but that considered Villa need squad depth. a cheap option who can sit on the bench/not play.
Anton Ferdinand would go alright next to Lauren. I'd go after him.
Miguel used to be one of my favourite players. probably still is.
Simek would be a good, cheap option for a team needing squad numbers. a quality young player I believe. would be perfect for Villa.
Finnan be an excellent player to get in the Barry deal.
Hoyte is ok. for a cheap price he'd provide some squad depth and could compete with Finnan to play on the right/as a back up central defender.
Seitaridis and Nelson. Two experienced quality defenders. Can't go wrong there.
van Buyten - would go alright next to Laursen. although I'm not sure they'd make the best partnership. much prefer Anton.
Mendy - cheap option. back-up right back. if he plays well and warrants more game time then he'll get it.
Chimbonda - not sure where all hate comes from. he's still better than alot of right backs in England.

There really isn't much there. Villa already have a decent midfield but some of the targets linked are really not attainable players.

There's a few Spanish based players I haven't included who have been linked and are probably attainable but the ones above are the most likely signings.

Villa probably need about 3 of 4 midfield players. Could probably get away with 3 good signings.

Bentley is about a 15% chance imo. I don't think it will happen.
Malbranque would be a good signing. He'd fit in well and wouldn't be overpriced.
Has Gera signed for Everton yet? If he hasn't he'd provide good squad quality.
Milner - I'm not a big fan but he'd be ok. As with Pennant. However in Milner's case it seems that he's ridiculously overpriced. Pennant + Finnan + 8 mil from Liverpool for Barry maybe?
Steve Sidwell + Pedro Mendes. Lets face it, Sidwell will sign for Villa. Signing a guy like Mendes who is pretty much surplus to requirements at Portsmouth these days would be a good move.

Strikers

Villa need one striker. I know Diouf isn't a striker but they have him listed as that on the Villa website. I'd prefer him to Pennant but he'd probably be a bit more expensive. More than he's worth.

Doyle is the most likely from the other three but Gudjohnsen is attainable and plays his best football behind the strikers. Agbonlahor could still start up front alongside Carew. He'd be an excellent guy to sign.

Darren Bent could be signing for Sunderland. Considering that even Hull's a chance to sign him!

The rest will depend on the formation and the style of football Hughes will want to play. A bit like last year, no-one really has a clue whether we'll succeed or fail.

Of the rest no-one has really kicked off their transfer window spending except for Spurs, and they're scum so they don't count.

I don't even know where Naylor plays but he won't cost much/anything. He might even be swapped for Moloney which would be very unfortunate.

Finnan would be free as part of the Barry deal. If we didn't get him as part of that then we wouldn't get him at all.

And while you're at it - tell me about Naylor.
Either way - the net cost so far would only be about 2-3 million.

Justin Hoyte. Not required at Arsenal. And he's versatile. Able to cover right back and central defence. If he signed;

Finnan/Hoye at right back.
Central defenders - Laursen, Davies, Hoyte and Knight. I don't mind that.

Wouldn't only cost about 2 million.

See folks - you don't have to spend much! You all want these extravagant and expensive transfer targets when you only need to concentrate on addressing your teams needs.

Total cost for defenders - 4-5 million.

Sidwell will end up costing Villa about 5 million. I'm no in favour of signing him but it seems 90% likely that he'll be lining up in a Villa shirt come next season so he must be included.

Mendes won't cost much. 2 million at most really.

10-11 million spent there.

And 15-16 million if Milner was signed.
I'd prefer Gera on the cheap though. Hopefully O'Neill sees common sense as well.

Considering we'll get at least 15 million for Barry + the money already received for Moore - under my recommendations Villa have yetto really spend any money.

Man City, depending on further purchases, should have the quality to be the best of the rest.

A lot depends on Big Jo (I love that name). He has much to live up to, after being bought for what is an inflated fee. Seems to have real quality though. He'll need it. He'll be a pivotal player. Maybe their most key player.

Probably need some bolstering in defence. Corluka + Richards + Dunne are excellent defenders. Onuoha will be a valuable asset, real talent. Potentially better than Richards IMO, just without the hype. Garrido looked a bit suspect though from what I saw. So another LB could be in order.

What is Castillo's situation? Will he join permanently? Where will he play too?

Midfield has options. Johnson, Ireland Elano, Petrov, Fernandes, Didi (how long can he keep performing at a high level), potentially Castillo could play here too I guess.

Will Benjani stay?

The previously mentioned Big Jo, Benjani, Caceido (only young, but 0 in 10 isn't a great start, can he be relied upon to deliver the goods?), and Castillo. Darius is there too I guess, although is he a chance to be packing his bags and hitting the road?

If Benjani stays, there's probably enough to get by without big bad Darius. (and do reasonably well). Remembering you would expect Sturridge to get a few games aswell.

Joe Hart looked the goods, but with Isaksson leaving, a 2nd/3rd choice goalie is required one would think.


So for me the priorities are, a left back, backup goalkeeper, probably a wide player (probably right sided, but it depends where Castillo will be utilised), and another central midfield player wouldn't hurt either.

They've got the coin to rectify the small issues, so I'd expect them to do this. If so, and Hughes can get the team to gel, they're going to be a seriously strong outfit, and I can see, and probably expect them to be, finishing 5th.

If Tottenham hold on to Berbatov and get a decent DM they'll be the best team outside the big 4. They might even challenge Liverpool for 4th which wouldn't surprise me.

From a West Ham point of view I have NFI why we haven't sold one of Collins/Davenport, Zamora, LBM, Gabbidon and Bowyer by now, surely we could get at least 12m from selling those 4, we have so much deadwood on our list it isn't funny.

I'd like to see a decent LW brought in, we have the right side covered provided Dyer and Faubert stay fit (If Neill goes Faubert can play RB) but on the left we have McCartney who is a much improved LB but he has no-one to link up with.

Our CB pairing of Upson and Ferdinand worked very well last season and they complimented each other beautifully, unfortunately Upson is injury prone and it would be folly to say he won't get injured at some point next season.

In midfield if Parker stays fit it will be a big boost for us, he's a very good player but after him we have Noble who has shown he'll be a quality player but we don't really have a decent no.10 type of player, that's why I'd be happy to bring Gudjohnsen in as he can play that role or as a striker.

Up front if Ashton has massive potential and started to show it towards the end of last season, however he needs to stay fit, hungry and get some reasonable service from midfield. Bellamy is a wildcard and I'll be extremely happy if he's fit for most of the season, as he would work very well in theory with Ashton.

After a nightmare injury run last season I don't see why we can't at least equal our finish of 10th last season, I'd say we could finish anywhere between 7th-12th this season and I'll take a stab and say we'll be 9th.

Well, at the moment we're still a bit short on players/quality, but we're slowly getting there I think.

Defenders:

We need a good quality central defender to play in alongside Taylor/Faye, of which I'd hope it'd be Faye but it will probably be Taylor, who has incidentally signed a new 3 year deal. Jonny Evans has been linked, and is probably a chance to sign with us, however he's just a young dude so I'd imagine we'd only get him in as back-up/one for the future.

The fact that I had to include Edgar in this list (who's really not very good), illustrates the fact that we're short on numbers, especially with the departure of Rozehnal to Lazio, and also with the release of Lamine Diatta.

We also probably need a full-back that can play either left or right, however I haven't seen us linked to many/any full-backs.

Beye - Taylor - Faye - Enrique

That's our defence at the moment and it's actually not that bad, certainly not the worst in the league and certainly not as bad as the record would suggest.

Out of this lot, only two of them are central midfielders, with one of them (Geremi) able to play there.

Even the two central midfielders lack a bit of creativity, and with Bartons record he'll probably be in prison by the time the season comes around.

Depends on the formation we'll be playing, but we have to bring in two central midfielders at least, especially with the departure of Emre.

The wing stocks are looking quite good, especially if N'Zogbia stays. It would be him playing on the left and Gutierrez playing on the right, with Milner on the bench as back-up for both sides (which is probably where he deserves to be).

At the moment though:

N'Zogbia - Butt - Barton - Gutierrez

Must be improved.

Strikers:

Martins
Owen
Carroll
Viduka
Ameobi

The first two strikers on the list are quality and would be our starters I'd imagine, however, other than them two we lack. Viduka has been pretty decent when he's played for us, however, he's old and out for six months anyway.

All we really need is one striker though, preferably a big one, to compliment Owen and Martins nicely.

A few things

Castillo only has 6 months left on his loan, we'll be making a decision to keep or let go in the January window. As it is, there are a few suggestions that he'll be moving to Spain in the off season anyway.

Bojinov will be a good asset (if he stays), but wouldn't expect too much too soon.

We still owe £6-7m on Benjani if he plays a certain number of games, so I hope we sell him, preferably to Bent 'Arry, preferably for a profit on what we paid last January.

Dunne, Richards, Corluka, Onuoha make for a pretty good back 4, and if Ned could stay fit I'd put him in at left back ahead of Ball or Garrido. Best thing about it is their ages, at a guess Richards 20, Onouha 21, Corluka 22 shows they still have a lot of improvement left in them.

Johnson, too many nights on the piss and too high an opinion of himself. Hopefully a bit of common sense will be beaten into him this season because he is very talented.

Elano, IMO will be much better for the experiences of last season. And having an intelligent, quick finisher (presuming Jo is that) ahead of him will do wonders for his game.

As for Caicedo, he's copped a bit from our supporters on the message boards who seem to have written him off already. But I liked what I saw from him in very limited minutes last season. Certainly needs to bang a goal or two in early next season though.
