The Gareth Barry saga has taken a bit of a twist:

O'Neill: Gunners In For Barry

The Gareth Barry saga has taken yet another twist after Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill revealed Arsenal have expressed an interest in the wantaway midfielder…
Rumours have arisen that the Gunners are preparing to swoop on the soon to be ex-Villa skipper, whose hopes of moving to Liverpool appear to be fading fast given recent developments.

The Reds have failed to meet Villa’s ₤18million asking price and are unlikely to go any higher than ₤15million, especially now that Juventus have dropped their interest in Xabi Alonso.

It has been speculated that Arsene Wenger, who is on the lookout for a top-notch central midfielder, may use the lull in negotiations to snap up Barry from under Benitez’s nose.

And O’Neill confirmed those suspicions last night, revealing that the Gunners have in fact made an enquiry into the England international’s availability.

Speaking to The Sun, the Ulsterman said: “Myself and Steve Walford both know Arsene Wenger’s assistant Pat Rice.

“He phoned Steve to ask how the Liverpool thing had gone and said that they might show an interest.

At the end of the conversation Arsenal said ‘that’s fine’ and that they’ll let us know. That is exactly what happened.”

I'd definitely take him. Arsenal are ridiculously short of mids to pair up with Cesc in the centre of the park. Barry is a very good option.

He's also ridiculously overpriced.

If anyone won't look twice at an overpriced englishman, it's got to be Wenger.

Pfft, you think Arsenal fans care about that? Personally, all I want is to see Arsene splashing the cash, and I'm sure many other Gunner fans agree. I for one would be happy at the sight of Arsene spending 20 mil on Gareth Barry, as opposed to us flinching at the thought of a bidding war occuring with Liverpool.

Are Real Madrid about to swallow a very big dose of karma? :D

It'll be hilarious if they started the transfer window chasing Ronaldo and finish it by losing Robinho.

Chelsea tempt Robinho with £48m offer· Brazilian tells Bernabéu he wants to join Scolari

· Real wait to sign Ronaldo before releasing forward
Julio Gomes Filho and Sid Lowe in Madrid The Guardian, Tuesday July 15, 2008

Robinho has been irritated by Real's attempt to use him as a makeweight for Ronaldo.

Real Madrid were last night considering a bid which sources at the Bernabéu claim is worth €60m (£48m) for the Brazilian playmaker Robinho after the Chelsea chief executive, Peter Kenyon, called Madrid's sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, to increase a €40m offer first tabled last Friday. However, the La Liga champions are reluctant to lose the 24-year-old Brazilian while their capture of Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo remains uncertain. Robinho, meanwhile, is determined to move to Stamford Bridge in order to work with their new coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Chelsea's renewed bid came in the wake of a tense meeting at the Bernabéu yesterday morning in which Robinho, flanked by his agent Wagner Ribeiro, told Mijatovic face to face of his desire to leave Madrid and play under Scolari. Robinho described the chance to link up with the Chelsea manager as "a dream".

Robinho failed to report to a pre-season get-together yesterday afternoon and will today fly to Brazil. His absence was officially attributed to his call-up for the Brazilian Olympic squad, but owes more to his annoyance at the Madrid side's failure to negotiate his departure. His advisers believe Real cannot oblige him to stay in light of their pursuit of Ronaldo. They are working to break the deadlock.

Robinho has been irritated by Real's attempt to use him as a makeweight in their move for the Old Trafford winger, while the club has refused to offer a contract extension.

"Madrid have failed to value him as he deserves," Ribeiro said, "and I do not like the fact that they tried to include him in the Ronaldo deal. Money is not the problem for us now. What matters for Robinho is to leave the club and play for Scolari at Chelsea."

During yesterday's meeting, Mijatovic told Robinho and Ribeiro that any interested club would have to meet the player's €150m [£119.6m] buy-out clause. Such clauses are not binding outside Spain and privately Real would welcome bids for the Brazilian. They stand to make a substantial profit on a player who cost €25m from Santos in 2005.

Yet Real are nervous about losing the Brazilian now because supporters are unhappy about any prospective sale and are still not sure of succeeding in their efforts to sign Ronaldo. The Madrid club does not want to be left empty-handed.

Although Chelsea's interest in Robinho is long-standing, it was the arrival at Stamford Bridge of countryman Scolari that persuaded him to swap the Castellana for the Kings Road. "It would be a dream for me to work with Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is one of the best coaches in the world. I have always spoken highly of him and he has always spoken very highly of me, since well before he was at Chelsea," Robinho said last night. "In 2003, when I was unknown in Europe, he called me to play in a charity match. It was brief but it was enough for me to see his style and character."

The Brazilian believes that a move to London offers him the opportunity to make a fresh start, as well as the chance to experience a new life after a career at Real Madrid where, played out of position, he has only occasionally shown glimpses of living up to his billing as the new Pele.

Ribeiro and Chelsea's Peter Kenyon met on three occasions last week and the Brazilian was even introduced to the club's owner, Roman Abramovich. The two parties agreed personal terms that include a five-year contract with a three-fold increase in Robinho's salary, understood to be €2m a year. After that meeting, a faxed bid worth €40m was sent to Madrid last Friday. A second bid was made yesterday following conversations between Ribeiro and Kenyon but Real are yet to respond formally.

Although Robinho's absence from the club's Portuguese get-together yesterday was attributed to his insistence on playing at the Beijing Olympics, that is an honour he would forgo to complete his move to Chelsea.

"Robinho wants to play the Olympics for Brazil, but he knows it is not a possibility if he moves to Chelsea," said Ribeiro. "Right now we are not thinking much about that, we are more worried with his future, where he is going to play next season.

He'll be a good signing for Liverpool. He might add some brains to your forward movements, and I reckon he may even be as influential for you as Gary McAllister was when Houllier signed him up.

You want to spend 20m badly?
Don't buy English.

We can get much better value for 20 mil.

We've got Behrami apparently, either Neill (more likely) or Faubert (whispers he wants to go back to France) out I'd say (at least he's no Steve Carr);

Hammers sign 'Swiss Beckham' Behrami, signalling Neill switch to Man City

By [JOHN EDWARDS]
Last updated at 8:49 PM on 15th July 2008

Lucas Neill moved a step closer to joining Manchester City last night after West Ham agreed a deal with Lazio right-back Valon Behrami.

The 23-year old Switzerland defender flew into London for a medical after activating a FIFA rule that will allow him to become a West Ham player for a fraction of Lazio’s original asking price.

West Ham will sign Behrami for less than a third of his initial £11m valuation after he informed Lazio he was invoking article 17, which gives players nearing the end of their contracts the right to move on without costing a fee.

Lazio will be entitled to compensation and are seeking over £3m, but West Ham are hoping to settle on around £1.5m for a versatile defender who started all three of Switzerland’s Euro 2008 matches.

Kosovo-born Behrami, whose Italian model girlfriend Elena Bonzanni should add some glamour to Upton Park, chose West Ham ahead of Palermo and Werder Bremen.

His arrival casts further uncertainty over Neill’s West Ham future.

Sportsmail revealed that City manager Mark Hughes was keen to revive their Blackburn partnership, and a move looks even likelier after the Australia defender was left in little doubt he would be competing for the left-back spot if he remained at Upton Park.

With just 12 months left on his contract, he seems sure to opt for a fresh start at Eastlands.

Looks like Ronaldinho has gone to Milan, pretty cheap deal for them at anywhere between £12-20m.

Disappointing, but a bit of a relief that I'm not going to be spending the next few months fretting about whether or not he is going to live up to the pricetag and wages we were prepared to spend on him.

Out of interest, any feelings from the Barcelona supporters, apparently Milan will be paying around £10m less for Ronaldinho than we offered.

Poor deal by Laporta?

Zamora and Panstil to Fulham finally went through. 5 million for Zamora. 1.3 million for Pantsil. An extra 500k for each if they crack 50 appearances for Fulham

Behrami had his medical with us last night and should sign in the next 48 hrs. Deal around 1.5 million apparantly

VERY good signing.:thumbsu:. It will make Neill 2nd choice right back and all but end his Hammers career. Will end up at Man City according to media (hows he gonna get a game there, seriously?)

Apparently Djibril Cisse is now back on the Hammers radar with him indicating he wants back in the EPL.

I think Marseille are trying to sell him but failing to get any real offers. I dont think we will be that interested. 7 mill for a bench warmer is unlikely given our current state

Romas Mancini joined Inter Milan for 10 million pounds it seems. Bargain.

Why does Bruce keep signing players from Birmingham. 3.5 million for Kapo. Hes okay but not worth 3.5 million...

Poor deal by Laporta?

I don't think he had any choice really as Ronaldinho was never going to move to City once Milan became interested. I suppose it shows a little bit of loyalty to Ronaldinho for his service by letting him go for what Milan were prepared to pay.

I think most agree you were paying 10 million too much. AC Milan have got it right in regards to what hes worth. You were gonna be the laughing stock if the deal went through 20 mill and 200k a week. Youd want Fernando Torres for that not a Barcelona benchwarmer

Davies?

He's not as good as Mellberg. Your central defence wont be as good as it was last year.
eeeoohhh.

Mellberg didn't play central defence last season. Hardly, if at all.

so you've made a conclusive statement and exposed the very few, if any times you watched Villa play. because now you've provided evidence suggesting that your viewing frequency of Villa was scarce.

bad move FC. check mate. :)

the only thing that serves you is that your comment is based on generalisation and opinion and doesn't actually indicate any actual regular or even infrequent watching of Villa's matches.

facts be told you can't have seen villa play because Mellberg just didn't play there.
it was either right back, filling in or on the bench.

Laursen was fit the whole season. He was partnered by Knight at the start and Davies towards the end.

whether your comment is right or not is irrelevant. because Mellberg didn't play central defence last season so how can our central defence be weakened by losing someone who never played there?
