€30m for them is nothing because Gazprom would've paid for it. They'll make that back by the end of the week from German households.

Gazprom now own Abramovich's oil company, for those who don't know what they are.

Yep. But I'd still have money on Arshavin leaving.

If it wasnt for my history with betting against people on BigFooty, id take this up.

I think Arshavin will stay on, for at least one more year in the Champions League anyway. Does anyone know how much Zenit are paying for the UCL? Wouldnt mind a fiver on them TBH, given how some teams will struggle playing in St Petersburg...

Hes on 130k at Zenit I heard so its not like he cares whether he stays or goes. I think he will want to go to a club that isnt a relegation candidate like Tottenham ;)

True.

Arshavin is the highest paid player in Russia. But interestingly, big name Russian players get tax exemptions as an incentive to stay in Russia so he's making €6.7m (if he's on €130,000) tax free from wages alone. Then there's the endorsements and personal sponsorship from Russian companies someone like him gets. You'll find Kerzhakov, Bilyaletidinov, Pavlyuchenko and Akinfeev get similar treatment.

In his case, I think there genuinely is a football reason for wanting a move. He'll make less at Tottenham than he would at Zenit. Talk about a rarity.

He would have enough money at this stage of his career. Id hope he moves to Spain. Would be a great replacement for Robinho now I think about it.

Barcelona don't have any more non-EU spots, no? None of Hleb, Toure or Caceras would have an EU passport.

Uruguay.

Unless he has parents from Europe he wouldn't have a Spanish one. He only moved there a year ago.

If not him then what about Gudjohnsen? Iceland aren't in the EU so unless he took out an English one (or even a Spanish one for that matter) he would be non-EU too.

well if we are constantly being linked with him and both our president and manager mentioning his name i'm tipping we have a spot left open.. why wouldn't Hleb have one? doesn't Belarus count as EU?

God no. Lukashenko's regime is one of the most authoritarian outside of North Korea. They're so far off EU membership that it be best summed up as Australia is more likely to get in. :p

Plus Hleb wouldn't have one because he left Germany before he would've been eligible. He was turned down for an English passport when we signed him initially. If he had a German one he would've of course got it automatically.

I don't think Toure counts as non-EU.

Wasn't there that agreement with African + Carribean nations?

what's the criteria? because he was at Olympiakos and Monaco for at least 3 years combined

The Spanish Football Federation have revealed African players will no longer be classed as non-European Union workers in the Primera Liga. The RFEF made the ruling in accordance with the Cotonou Agreement, a treaty signed in Benin in 2000 by members of the EU and a group of 77 African, Caribbean and Pacific states (ACP).

The agreement stipulates that nationals from those countries working legally in Europe should have the same rights as EU citizens.

In many European countries, football clubs are prevented from selecting more than three non-EU players in each match, but the RFEF's new ruling, which was made following consultation with FIFA and UEFA, means that will no longer be the case in La Liga.

"From now on players from these countries that play in Spain will be considered as coming from the European Union as will those that sign in the future," said RFEF spokesman Jorge Carretero.

Among the players affected by the RFEF's ruling are Barcelona duo Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon) and Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast), Real Madrid's Mahamadou Diarra (Mali) and Sevilla striker Arouna Kone (Ivory Coast).

Article looks like it was from about a year or so ago.

Pretty sure it's accumulated time in one country and then it goes back to nought when they move to another country. I don't think it counts as one when they move from one EU country to another.

Not all of them have one either. It surprised me that Adebayor, despite being in France for seven years, didn't have a French passport.

so almost like a citizenship correct?

Yeah, basically. Comparison is permanent residency in this country (which is what I had until last year). If you leave before you qualify and then come back you start all over again.

Iceland don't count as non-EU because of something tying them in with Denmark, which is an EU country, or something. They have similar status to Norway or Switzerland. When you line up at the EU gate at the airport there's the EU flag along with Norway's, Iceland's and Switzerland's.
