Come on man - it's not just shelters. It's women's dorms, sororities, schools, sports, hostel accomodation, gyms, prisons, change rooms and yes, toilets

You're not really thinking why we prohibit men from these spaces, and why women might be guarded about letting men who present themselves as women into these spaces.

Why shouldn't women reserve the right to discriminate against transgender people in these instances?

If you truly believe they shouldn't, then why should they discriminate against men?

I honestly get what your saying. But if an individual feels THAT threatened by a transgender woman I'm sure alternate arrangements can be made for them regarding accommodation. It's a sector that sorely needs more finance and more workers anyway judging by what I've been reading of shelter overcrowding and such.

We're talking about a larger group feeling threatened by a smaller, sometimes dangerous, minority (who are actually part of the oppressive majority i.e. men). It's not one threatened individual versus another, it's many individuals feeling threatened by singular instances of people they don't believe to be true females.

I know someone who was involved with the Seven Sisters festival in Victoria. It was a woman's only music festival. A few years back a pre-op transgender woman complained about being denied entry to the festival. The festival back-pedalled to let them in, but a lot of women stopped going because they felt once a man was let in it ruined their ability to experience it as women.

Why is their subjective experience diminished in favour of another's subjective experience? Especially when the transgender person's experience is further removed from what most might consider objective reality. It's an inversion of values.

Isn't the whole point of this that women would feel threatened sharing bathrooms with men?
Depends where it is.

In some London city finance joint they would feel super-threatened. Those guys are animals.

I went to a bar in Collingwood a few months ago and they had a shared bathroom. It was really weird and made me feel uncomfortable just from the social conditioning we're used to as a society.
Look, if we can have special washrooms for the religious, we can have urinals with foot-holds half way up so the ladies can experience the joys of the trough alongside the fellas.

Stop being so reactionary.

But what about people with golden shower fetishes? They need their own private bathrooms as well.

They have one at the Ballarat footy ground. Isn't that enough? The population of Ballarat is roughly the same as the number of transgender people in Australia.

The maths works out.

Why do we so often segregate by sex? In whose interests do we segregate things like crisis accomodation, prisons, dorms, etc?

It is interesting isn't it.

I worked on small scientific vessels in the 90s with groups of 3 or 4 (men and women). We had an on board toilet but it was pretty disgusting to use in a confined space, next to beds and food storage in sloshing environments. As such we just did our stuff off the back.

Whether it was peeing, shitting or showering; it was all in the open. Sure we tried to be discrete but within days, no one cared.

So part of the segregation is culture, habit and shyness. but in reality, we wouldn't need it if we didn't have it.

Come on. Really?

Let me know how that unisex high-security prison pans out.

Why do people care so much about things which literally have no effect on them

Did OP pick up someone on tinder then get a rude shock? Why the **** do we care what other people do?
In this case it does have an effect on society, and we generally care about that. Also there is a perception that in many cases reality is being ignored in order to spare feelings or avoid charges of bigotry. The latter is a bigger issue.

The reality is that there are some transgender people and society has a responsibility to deal with that.

Perception=reality. If your at least respectful of people shut like this won't happen. What's the reality?

Of course they have to deal with it, the question is how. On one hand there are people who say that we must know all 50 gender pronouns as well as other species that these people identify as, and on the other the criticism is that none of this has any basis in scientific reality. I'm more of the opinion that the debate needs to be had and that we stop sticking our heads in the sand when there are obvious problems like boys competing in girls competitions, unfair accusations of hate speech, and so on. At the moment the discussion is often being shouted down by authoritarian leftists who assume it's transphobic to present anything but their own views.

W/boys competing with girls. What debate? Hormone replacement therapy takes a drastic toll on the body. I don't think it's up for the regular punter to debate, bar leave it to the relevant bodies. For say people who argue about hitting pubity as a male going through hormone replacement is an advantage but hormone replacement takes a huge toll physically on the body. It shrinks muscles. Reduces bone density. So at what level. If any do they have an advantage. This is where not many people really have expert understanding.

As for "we must know 50 gender pronouns". I feel this is just a frustrated jab. Also why isn't this a scientific reality? Psychology is a science. (This is debatable must say)

I have never heard anyone say anything about 50 gender pronouns.

I suppose everything boils down to one phrase mate. "To each their own." As long as you are doing no harm to others, I believe in this philosophy.

The problem with the pronouns is that they are enforced, and people are harassed for speaking against this. It's ugly.

Yeah. I actually think everyone is entitled to their opinions. About transgender. About Muslims. About everything. Honesty, brutal honesty if needs be, about WHY we feel this way about subjects we argue passionately for or against is key though.

Even the most outright bigot or racist should have a chance to say they hate people based on the colour of their skin or that their gender aint the one they were born as or they follow the wrong god.

With that sort of brutal honesty, honesty without abuse mind you, at least people will know where everybody stands.

Acting on these hatreds is still the bridge we cannot cross though.

Could be said about any political debate.

I guess you missed that New York has proposed fining people for misusing gender pronouns

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...f-thats-the-pronoun-they-demand-that-you-use/

Should be illigal with extremely heavy penalties for anyone under 18 to have a sex change. Saw some ad on TV about this kid who was like 8 and got a sex change and his parents are being treated like heros. What a ****ing joke. They need to be in jail. Someone 8 years old can't make that decision. There's no way in hell anyone who's not them should make that decison ever.

I guess you didn't read the article

"For example, repeatedly calling a transgender woman “him” or “Mr.” after she has made clear which pronouns and title she uses …" seems to incidate it's more of a harrasment and fining people who don't accept your new identity. However at face value that does seem insane. for example, I used to deal with someone at work who was transgender who I had a lot of dealing before he decided to chance, did call her Mike a few times before i got the hang of it. Absolute non-issue
