Please be aware that the tolerance of anti-trans language on BF is at an all-time low. Jokes and insults that are trans-related, as well as anti-trans and bigoted rhetoric will be met with infractions, threadbans etc as required. It's a sensitive (and important) topic, so behave like well-mannered adults when discussing it, PARTICULARLY when disagreeing. This equally applies across the whole site.

Yeah probably not a good example on my part (the swimming and athletics ones were better)

I suspect the reasons the negro leagues were set up had little to do with sporting ability, and more to do with issues of racial integration more broadly.

Yeah they existed in a different time of racial segregation. Can't really have a team environment with blacks and whites playing together then separating on the team bus - what kind of sick dynamic would that be? There was probably an element of not wanting to allow black players into the major leagues because people recognised their potential and felt threatened, though.

I can't imagine a 'white' NBA. The game as people know it now is made for height and athleticism and dominated by African Americans who are ~200cm and have insane athleticism. Different game when the majority of players can play above the rim.

No no. The men's league is the open league.

The women's league has already had a regulation put on it to allow women, who are overwhelmingly inferior athletically, to compete on a playing field set at women's level. It literally has been created to restrict access to those who possess a natural advantage to allow the women to compete against each other.

Yep. It's silly when people say 'men's' cricket or talk about the 'men's' side of an AFL club. It's not the Weld Club.

If there was a female player good enough to play test cricket or for the Socceroos or for an AFL club etc. then I would encourage them to challenge any rule in place that denies their selection.

But it's completely hypothetical because there is a chasm in standard between the elite levels by gender. The best player in the AFLW might compete in C grade amateurs? Even then you are talking about a comp that will have blokes that are pushing 100kg.

Anyone here have any thoughts on whether transgenderism is a physiological condition, or a psychological one? For example, is their conviction that they are a woman trapped in a male body (or vice versa) due to their brain being physiologically different from their biological sex (essentially meaning they have a "female brain" in a male body, for example). Or is the cause environmental, like there's something that has gone awry in their development/upbringing that causes a distortion in their self perception that allows a person to naturally identify with their biological sex. This is the thing that fascinates me the most, and is at the core of whether it's a mental illness or not.

Really? Wouldn't have thought that would present a problem in a professional league. Maybe at amateur levels when performance isn't related to your career and livelihood.

This is what Shame Mumford did to 6'2 88kg Mitch Duncan. I don't think he would to that to 5'6 60kg Nina Morrison in case he killed her.

Same as in soccer. Any decent boys U14s team would beat the Matildas. Yet the women in the W League get paid a few thousand and are sponsored, whereas the boy's parents have to find regos fees and buy their own boots.

The Matildas did lose 7-0 to the Newcastle Jets U/15s.

The W-League has a salary cap of $300k, the NWSL (US equivalent) $350k. That's about as good as it gets. If you are the best female player in the world you might get $60-70k, whereas the minimum in the A-League for a player older than 20 is $64k. And the A-League with an average wage of $180k isn't a high paying comp by world standards and comes in at #27 at last count. There would be something like 15-20,000 male players paid more than the best female player. And without wanting to s**t on the women's game, see above RE: Newcastle Jets. That hierarchy is actually meritorious.

But it's not merit based nor is it a function of gender. It's a function of commercial interest. Plenty of athletes the world over make next to nothing out of their craft, male and female. Plus it's pretty common for female players to be paid more than they generate in income out of the strength of the men's game.

A beautiful woman with average talent can make more than an average looker with great talent. Especially in tennis.

You're thinking of Anna Kournikova, aren't you?

Dang, now I am too:p

Maybe, but then again, 5'6 & 60kg Nina ain't getting anywhere near an AFL team.

She was no. 1 draft pick and had a stand out first game which would potentially be a pathway to being a professional at the sport - if all were equal. But it's clearly not. There is a chasm in standard between the elite levels by gender.

Mumford at 6'6 108kg would not want to be tackling Nina Morrison at 5'6 and 60kg. And she would not want to be tackled by him.

Could be. Only one way to find out though!
If Nadals body was forced to reduce his testosterone levels as a prerequisite to compete his performances would deteriorate there is no elite male tennis player competing at the elite level that is forced to lower their testosterone levels to under 10nmols.
