To me its more signing a guy for 9 years on big money is a win now move, which means you rate your list a clear top 4 side. Otherwise you wouldnt take such a big risk, forget about who it is and the culture crap i just think the club has potentially over rated the list big time

Here's a thought for you all to ponder: If Franklin helps us win a flag, does it matter which year it is?

Many thought the Swans would bounce back in 2007 after the heartbreak of 2006 but it would take another five years and the turnover of most of our list before we would taste premiership success again. 2012 proved that you don't have to 'bottom out' to win a flag and that you can rebuild your list in a relatively short period of time, even during a period of compromised drafts! There is more than one road to the holy grail. Franklin may well be a part of our next premiership side but it may not be the side we expect. Not writing off 2014 by any means though. Lesson learned from footy (and life): things never go according to plan.

How does a 9 year contract = a 'win now' move?
Horse has said a few times that he doesn't think this side will hit their peak for a few more years (I think he said 2 years from memory).
If there are players that have a problem with Buddy's contract they need to be moved on.
If Buddy's signing has caused the club to fracture then we are in for a world of hurt because it will take years (as in > 10 years) to fix. If people are jealous about Buddy's contract that does not say much for the club's culture.
I don't for one minute believe that Buddy's contract has anything to do with the way the team is travelling, it is just the most convenient excuse at the moment.
One more thing...we won in 2012 and played a prelim in 2013, we should be rated highly.
Let's not offer the players/coaches an easy cop out. None of them have lost a leg or an arm. All we ask for is that they show some of that bloods intestinal fortitude, if its too hard, thanks but be on your way.

I still think the issues started last year when Tippett came back in post the Adelaide game. Remember that game..!! From the minute Tippett arrived the long bomb game arrived and we have not shifted from it since. We used to boast a great spread of goalkickers prior to this.....ffs we celebrated him kicking 35 goals or whatever it was in the second half of the season, we should have been really concerned at everyone else's drop off in that department because we just bombed and bombed, and this year its the same old story.

Can we just look for another option from time to time and put some doubt in the defence's mind once in a while.......it might just help.

See I don't think we've over-rated our list. It's more like our strategy has been poor, too many players came into the season with injury concerns and it feels like there are a couple on the list that are just cruising. It's a better list than the one that won in 2012 on paper.

I can see why they did it, but it's not looking like a move they ever should've made. Can take or leave White, but Mummy is a huge loss.

I agree, Buddy is not the problem.......it starts in the coaches box with the structures or lack there of that are being set up, we have some serious flaws there I think. And the players who are living on reputation are not delivering.

Nope, doesnt matter, but 2016-2019 will be too difficult with GWS and GC dominating. Following this most of his value will have passed.

Now that we have the oldest team in the league and are set for major retirements, I see this year being our best chance while he is a premium, and so far 2014 is shot.

Mummy was always going to be the biggest loss, I think it was always a question of how much we would miss him rather than if. I am genuinely not sure whether getting Franklin was right or wrong at this stage, most of us would have agreed at the start of the season that this year was a strong opportunity to challenge for a flag. We won't know until the end of the season how much of an opportunity it really was.

Having said that, Franklin is only 27 and I think we will need a forward with his class and experience anyway no matter what stage our list is at, as I think once players retire we will probably just try to 'rebuild without bottoming out' as we have done before, and if we have a really good year like in 2012 there is always the chance of pinching another flag -- that's the benefit of staying competitive!

No wonder JPK is stuffed by the half way through the year ( went under the radar in 2012 ) but now coaches no he is the go to man, extractor. I am sick of seeing 2 blokes jumping on his back and mauling him week in week out , the guy is 25 and wont last to 30 if it keeps going on and with ROK no longer up to it we miss another big body mid/tagger around the ball.
I understand Bird is our shut down guy but he takes HBF like players not guys like Pendles , Watson , Fyfe , Mundy etc.
People wont Smith in the middle to shut down guys but he is far to important to take out of the backline and the role he does week in week out.
Seriously think we should look at Rampe in the future as an ROK replacement just to have another big body around the contest at times to help JPK as JPK cant go on like this for ever. Rampe is 188cm and 89 KG similar to Crowley , Hocking like players and has speed/superior endurance good one on one and could take the likes of Watson , Mundy etc and give JPK a hand at the same time.
Its an issue for me with ROK finished as a mid and no one to help Kennedy out as the guy just gets mauled every week and how long can you take it for before the body says no more.

Tippett - Only 13 games for the Club ( still unknown how he will go week in week out 2nd rucking )
Buddy - 4 games for the club and will take weeks to get used to what ever structure it is.
Rohan - 31 games of senior footy and still has not yet found his best position and leg still not 100%
Mitchell - 18 games and still finding his feet at senior level week in week out after a limited pre season.
Rampe - 27 games , give him some credit from where he was 2 years ago but still raw in games wise.
Laidler - 3 games , will take time to get used to playing senior footy after a year out of AFL and getting used to the back 6
Cunningham - 10 games , still raw in games played but has been getting better each week
Reid - Plays 2 weeks injured for 10 , he cant get any confidence in his game to even take his game to the next level.
Goodes - Has not been seen since r13 last year , enough said
AJ - Would of been in the coaches planning for 2014.
Dericx , meh
Pyke - limited pre season ,
LRT , Shaw , ROK have declined more than maybe club thought

No EXCUSES for the loses but when I look it at like that a Flag is far and wide in my books as half the team has not even played together ( not even trained together due to limited pre season ), Reid , Tippett , Buddy etc and the list goes on and on for blokes who haven't even ran through a banner together( Buddy , Roughy , Cyril , Gunston etc didn't take over night )
This team could take the hole year to get used to each other if we get the likes of Reid back , Garys leg better , Tippett stays on the park etc etc.
We will not drop of the face of the earth with the talent we have but maybe a Flag this year is not really a chance.
Building games into Rohan , Mitchell , Harry and everyone getting used to each other could set us up for the coming years.
