I'm maybe insensitive to his issues but do we want a captain to telegraph weakness to our competitors?
As far as I'm concerned if he chooses to play, he is 100% fit and should be leading the team with no compromises to attitude.
Have any other our previous captains had a sulk post a form slump?

FFS.

i would prefer the captain turn up to these press conferences and say we are going to win or beat the living suitcases out of them trying. put tex in a head lock and give him a scorchy then storm out. Far out if they are flat give them a rest from training sink a few beers...just fire up for one more.

This is the same bloke who had some ridiculous like 13 touches and 7 clearances in the last quarter of Showdown 35, as well as many other similar clutch performances late in close games over 2013-2014. The leadership ability is well and truly there. I don't know where it's gone this year, but at his best he's up there with the best captains in the league. Would be premature to strip him of the captaincy after one bad year, especially an evidently injury affected one.

This is precisely my thoughts.

Dog barking at parked car type thread. We've got bigger problems.

Every player this year has struggled when we dont play as a team,it's obvious the group is broken. I'm not saying it's a player rift but it's not just the lack of cattle on the park. The group look tired and beaten. I have mentioned the over training before but it also looks like a lack of belief in each other. On the weekend i noticed numerous times when a shepherd should have been given but wasn't,there was limited run and then the skills were deplorable. It looks like mental and physical fatigue.

Dead set...the dude has some serious runs on the board in terms of leading from the front.

We are a steaming pile of shit at the moment so what exactly do you want him to say ?? Media is an obligation, especially as captain.
He's not going to slaughter his club, his coaches and his teammates for the position we are in as that's not the way it's done.

He and every other player or coach that has to front the media will toe the diplomatic line as they always have.

I'm not sure what some people expect to hear at pressers or media in general.

To paraphrase our esteemed moderator "that's it!"

100% negative. Didn't even give us a chance.

i agree. he was defeated. When the question was asked if we can win, then immediate answer, without hesitation should have been a bold YES. Absolutely. But he didnt even say yes, he said if we bring our best game we can match them!!! thats terrible.

TLDR who the captain is isn't the issue and this thread has wound me up.

Now. I disagree with the op. Travis is our captain and he should be. He stuck around when we were on the floor. He stuck around when success was thrown at his feet. He stuck around to bring this club back and I believe he will. Sure he's not having a great time atm and as a club we're falling towards the canvas again but I think he is the man to lead us back up. Tbh I think he is being asked to play roles that are not natural to him. Pay attention to him in game away from the ball and you'll see how hard he's working. Problem is its often looking defensively towards his player.

What needs to change is the collective mindset. A determination to be the best. Attention to detail. A respect for each other. Ruthless and tough on and off the field. None of this messing around at the club with soccer balls. No trick shot videos. No behind the scenes crap. No side jobs and certainly no TV shows. Focus on your job. Every single player. Every single coach. Every inch of the football department. Expect the best and nothing less. If you're not willing to make that commitment then gtfo

i agree, he deserves another shot at captain if he wants to go on. But that interview was like a funeral

Boak has had two less than ideal seasons. His fumbling and ineffectiveness was evident throughout our losses last year too. Let's not sugarcoat his leadership and performance as captain on Monday nights, when on game day his form has left many scratching their heads.

We probably don't have a better candidate to captain us. The only alternative is Wines and he is far from the finished product. He needs few distractions to make sure his game picks up after stagnating.

I'm sure he would look back at that interview and think he could have done better. It happens. He is crawling to the line of an extremely tough year. No doubt in my mind that he has been struggling with something chronic like OP this year, the signs have been there. I'm backing him in to lead our turnaround.

Whats his injury? No1 has said anything and any rumours of it have been flat out denied.

Well if he is injured as this board claims he should be in surgery this week.

Polec's injury should have taught our leaders something.

This is a terrible thread.

OP needs a slap.

Why? Because our captain came across as soft during a TV presser and an interview on 5aa? Does his softtness reflect on the current playing group?

Have we not all called out for a tougher harder Port Adelaide? What happened to the Port Adelaide of old? etc, etc.

I hate seeing our club turn to shit again because there is no anger or passion left in our leaders and players!

Weak!

Overrated, as a captain and player. His year last year was absolutely terrible as well. A few good games, most the games he padded his stats in the last quarter once the game was already lost. Never there when it counts. Somehow he's got even worse this year.

Average kick, average handball. Can't hit a teammate with his hands under pressure/being tackled. Doesn't win enough ball. He's even lost the only elite thing about his game which was his workrate/fitness, that has seemed to go out the window this year.

I don't get all the stuff about him being injured, was he injured 75% of last year too? He can't hack it for the first 3 quarters when the intensity and speed is on.

If everyone could stop melting til next season that would be great.

I stand but Travis, regardless if our club has gone backward in recent years. Ollie is surely the next choice but only if he can make his disposal efficiency increase from being the worst in the AFL.

I'd love to see Hombsch or Trengove as captain but I don't think anyone but Ebo could fulfill that role right now (besides Boaky), if we're spitballing here.

Pittard might be a general in defence but when it comes to off-field obligations for captaining I don't think he could do it - he can be shy and moody.
