Obviously you'd love him here, but it just can't happen when we already have players getting paid under the odds to stay (and even then it's a squeeze). Sure Dasher goes and some others take cuts as they get older, but we still have young guys coming up for new contracts. It simply isn't a realistic option, and could cause unrest in the playing group.

The bullshit spinners that are the HS writers have a much more realistic situation for us which is if Ablett goes we would look at Boak. Dasher wouldn't be on half of what Boak's market value would be.

if ablett walks, maybe we'd look at getting the best available replacement. otherwise, no chance. we have to accommodate our own players before we can look at poaching big names from other clubs.

And halve that again as a vet.

Would love to have him, and no doubt he would love to come back to Geelong, but it wont happen. Too many other Victorian clubs would be able to offer him double what we can.

Have to wonder what is happening at Port.

Not going to happen.

It throws up a scenario though. Say we get compensated a first round pick should Gazza leave, could we trade that as a future pick for a replacement player? Obviously it would be believed to be worth more in the future - with everyone assuming we fall away - than it would be now. Imagine trading to Port for Boak and then they have to pick the right year to use it. IE the year that Geelong dips. Would be interesting but I bet AFL wouldn't let it happen.

If this eventuated i would be rapt. This guy is my faviroute player in the afl (not including the cats). If he came, which is a massive if, him and Selwood would become the best 1 2 pairing of midfielders in the league in 5 + years.. Dont know why i'm getting excited though, wont happen, hes happy in port

Say Dasher retires at the end of the season, which player could Geelong put on the veteran's list to replace him.

That would free up some room, but I'd assume that would go in the raises to Ablett and Selwood.

Only scenario I could see Boak coming is if Ablett went to the Gold Coast.

Port would want some pretty good compensation also. I could see them asking for Mackie + an early pick.

I'm pretty sure you can't trade future picks. And assuming we make the finals again this year, we won't have a high first round pick to trade. So it'd only get done as a trade if there were players involved I'd think (i.e. Mackie would be the obvious thought)

Anyway he's a very good player and obviously he's young enough so if he was a) willing to come here for less money (very important given our players have taken pay cuts) and b) the deal was right then you would look at it, but like the other posters have said, I don't see it happening in reality.

Boak is an excellent footballer and I think other Victorian Clubs would be in a better position to offer him a sweet deal. Given our history with trading for players I cannot see anything happening.

Wojak was on the verge of being delisted last year due to the Salary Cap so remaining after this year will be a challenge for him. My tip is Milburn will retire this year as I think Drum is seen as his replacement.

The big factor is Ablett. If he stays then that means some of our lessor lights may get a push. If he goes and a few retire, then that is going to open the Cap up a bit. But when you already under pay some very talented players any space in the cap should go to them.

Aside from the fact that I can't see him getting to Geelong when you have a whole host of players that are taking pay cuts to remain loyal to the club, I actually don't rate him that highly.

From what I have seen of him he tends to kick short a lot and be pretty ineffective in general. I haven't really seen him influence a match to any great degree even when he has racked up a number of possessions. He is still only young, and I probably unfairly compare him to a Selwood , but I just don't see him as the sort of player you would throw everything at even if we weren't in salary cap trouble.

Anyway all moot points anyway.

Seriously guys, this is just a case of the agent bloating his contract negotiations. He loves it at Port and will not leave. He'd have to be close to the highest paid player at Port by the time this contract is negotiated any rate, how would Geelong be able to match that?

I know that the article is probably written to rile a few feathers, but i found it interesting to read that Port were most afraid of losing Boak to the Cats. He is a local boy and Wells and co. wanted him badly in 06, but surely they would feel we cant fit him in the cap.

Getting Boak in would do wonders for our future. He and Selwood would be an unbelieveable force in years to come.

Without trying to offend, there is is more to life than money and i think the culture and stability at PAFC wouldn't be near that of the GFC.

He's a local boy and maybe would like being able to play AFL and live in his old neighbourhood. For what its worth i dont think he'll leave. However, there is more to life than money and AFL players understand this. At Geelong, almost everyone has taken a cut below their market value to be part of this club/culture.

I agree with you. But are you just as confident about Gray staying?

I'll admit, after the hiding you guys gave us in the 2007 GF we floundered as a club for the next couple of years and yes we have had some issues, but the perceptions of our clubs demise has been greatly exagerated. Every club has it's ups and downs, some more downs than ups, but we are a far cry from many other clubs in the league. Sure you guys are at the top of the heap at the moment but it hasn't always been thus. We are sitting 4-2 with a good group coming through.

Boak loves Port, has no desire for the bright lights and Herald Sun adulation of Melbourne Town and yes, if anyone could draw him away it would be Geelong to be closer to his family/ friends, but in all honesty, after 4 years that probably ain't an issue. He ain't a nancy boy like Nick Stevens. And again, there is no way you could fit him in your salary cap.

As I said, if he were to come here, it would probably have to be for less money than what he is on now, which is one of several reasons why it won't happen.

If we get a Compensation pick for GA , it would be the top level pick which wouldn't be able to be used till 2012. However they are tradable but once traded I suspect our position on the ladder would not be used , it would be calculated on the the news owners position. It would actually be worth far more to any club ( like Rich this year) that basically knows they will finish bottom.

I really doubt us trading for a high priced mid. We grow our own and as much as we wanted him at the draft , we probably prefer to put our efforts into Menzel,Duncan,Christensen etc. If he said us and no one else and didn't care about money then perhaps but I doubt that will happen

Agreed...you wouldn't say no to a quality young local player who was willing to take a pay cut to come, but I doubt we'll chase him unless he chases us.

Port are also notoriously hard to trade with.

I proposed this at work today. If Ablett does walk, the offer of 800k means that what we have to offer others. Of note, with Milburn maybe pulling the pin also, means we have another spot on the Veteran's list to use.

We should receive two picks if Ablett goes, therefore, have some youth coming through. Likewise, with 800k off the books with Ablett gone (just projecting here!), added to Dasher's contract, plus the move of another player to the Veteran's list, means we are well off if the worst happens.

I would say we wouldn't chase Boak, we would go for a direct replacement with the best on offer plus upgrade some salaries as they come up.

However, all good in theory. I'd much rather Ablett stay!

I think Geelong's in a win/win (not with boak though)

Just say Ablett leaves, you will get at least two first rounders. Something like pick 1-3 and pick 4-6. So if he does go, with Selwood and a few other kids coming through, Geelong could stay near the top of the AFL for many more years to come. tbh, I'd let Gaz go and get some good young kids coming into Geelong so your team does stay at the top for the next 3-5 years.

That said, Boak isnt going anywhere.

any name other than 'gary ablett' and i'd agree with you. but a player like that means too much to the club - it'd be heartbreaking seeing him play anywhere eles
