I'm not saying it should.

But if we want Cloke we have to offer something convincing, that might be the ticket.

For sure mate, wasn't having a dig at you. It would take the earth for Cloke snr to give the ok to a move. 7 years is insane though, not sure even the Clokes would be that stupid in putting it out there - but anything is possible I guess.

Yeah, I understand mate.

I'd rather this be 'smoke and shadows' to have a crack at a player like Sidebottom.

I'm with you a bit here TPM - the more I think about it the more I would like us to land a very, very good midfielder with that cap space available as that is what we need the most. I think the Pies will concentrate on keeping Cloke and possibly a guy like Sidebottom might slide under the radar a bit and we can offer him a deal the Pies simply can't match.

If thats the case, we might as well of taken Ball 2 years back

Regarding taking Cloke on a 7 year contract ...

At the tail end of that contract, Cloke will be about the same age Barry Hall was, when he played at the Bulldogs in 2010-11.

I personally dont think theres a lot of point getting *a* gun midfielder in free agency - a single gun mid is too easy to tag with a single negative player.

But you've either got a gorilla capable of stopping a gun KPP, or you dont.

And if you dont, then you need to try and slow them down one-on-one, and have someone zoning into their space.

Mitch Davis already needs a gorilla.

Theres also the psychological impact on Cloke - he's seen two of his brothers cut. Seven years guaranteed, at eight hundred thousand a year. Five point six million.

I'd do it.

The worst case scenario is you're in cap hell after he gets injured - but with the AFL salary cap at about $8.8m, he represents roughly the difference between spending 92% of cap and 100% of cap.

I'd still do it.

Would have loved Ball 2 years ago if he wanted to come here. Imagine the leadership and work ethic he would be showing to the younger brigade right about now. It would be perfect.

Regardless of if we are really chasing Cloke I would like to see us be major players this off season but not to get carried away and waste it on someone because we feel we have to. I have confidence that the current FD aren't capable of doing that but... this is Melbourne after all. ;)

seven years = recipe for complacency. 5 years is the max I'd ever like to see clubs offer, and that should be saved for players who are 25-26. By the end of their contract they have to keep working hard because they're in the vulnerable 30yo age bracket

Or how about really ****ing Eddie off and going after Wellingham and Sidebottom? Both would be better imo with more responsibility, and would make Trengove/Jones/Sylvia/Moloney/Gysberts + Viney/other high draft pick midfielder look like a very good midfield.

I reckon Sidebottom and Wellingham are much more likely targets than Cloke.

No doubt, I have a lot of time for both those guys.

Really good players who when given responsibility seem to rise to the challenge.

:thumbsu:

The midfield is where we need boosting.

we will not be able to outgun GWS, dollars-wise, and our need is the midfield.

Hit the nail right on the head there Mr Biff!.....exactly.game over!
If and its a big if he leaves collingwood it would be to gws and gws only for 1,000,000,000 a year for 6 years.hell they can afford it after paying unders for scully!.......

Yeah you can. Our cap is already suprisingly tight, and we have all these kids who will be wanting pay rises.

Freo is far more of a threat for Cloke than GWS will be.

Might be able to get away with that on the Carlton books!

Mate, as always, timing is everything, but perfection is unattainable. And I love it :thumbsu::D

A gun midfielder in FA, who can beat the tag, who frees up the likes of Jones / Trengove - with JV coming in as a ready made footballer, with some further 1st round picks in the upcoming super draft

It's not as simple as saying we'd be bringing in 1 gun mid and they'd tagged out of it. The ripple effect it would have on the remainder of the midfield is what would be more important

A capable midfield delivering to Clark (with Jurrah, Petterd, Howe hovering) would be tanatalising

The list of midfielders available in FA is pretty depressing reading.

Also the number of players who arnt taggable today?
Judd
Ablett......

even players like Pendlebury and Murphy or Swan would get tagged so hard they feel it next week playing for Melbourne thast why we need a spread of quality throughout the midfield/ground.

I would be dissappointed if we dont have enough room to get a A grade mid and a Cloke to be honest, doesnt mean either will happen, but our side isnt earning 92.5% of the cap compared to WC, Hawks, Geelong and Collingwood atm

Judd and Ablett were both tagged hard last week, and while they got possessions, they werent match winners.

There just arent any A-grade mids in this FA class, by the way - just a couple of B- and C-graders.

FWIW GWS will probably have a couple of young mids available at the end of next year - high first rounders or zone picks who cant break into the first team.
