Cloke to Dogs is a story that won't be told until September. If he can play the CHF role and be a good target, and kick straight, he could be very important for the Dogs in tight finals when a tall option is needed and just one deep isn't enough but he has to win his spot first and the perform when he does. There's a bit to play out yet.
Your If..and..and..could be ...win says it all

They said the same about every other player who has left Collingwood in the Buckley era.
Amazing how well we have done with the departing players in that almost all have done bugger all since leaving us. Heater a few good years, not a lot left, and Beams really good player missed a lot with injuries (shocking attitude to us).
Could we include in the list a former coach who went backwards at another club.

I wouldn't include beams. he did a runner.

Sorry for the intrusion to your board, I come in peace. I am a big fan of Grundy and although I don't like any other team Collingwood are well down the list of my most hated.

Anyway, let's get down to business. Halfway through the season I'm firmly in the 'Cloke is cooked' camp. He does not fit in with our gamestyle at all. His forward pressure isn't enough. He can't take enough grabs to link our attacking chains or help our (frankly pathetic) forward 50 entries. He's no better a back up ruck than players 5cm smaller. He might kick 2 goals a game here and there but they'll be spectacular bombs outside 50 that lift the crowd but don't do much else. His second efforts are weak, he looks like he'd rather someone else did the work.

The reason I'm here is to ask what went wrong ? How did a bloke go from AA premiership forward to cooked before his 30th birthday without serious injury?

I really want to him to play VFL the rest of the year. Nothing personal, seems like a lovely bloke , but footy has passed him by.

Would any of you have him back at the Pies? That's a serious question Btw, I realise we aren't going to get a refund after 30 days

Welcome to the conundrum that is Travis Cloke.

I was really surprised the Dogs chased him as I didn't see how he fitted in other than as a backup for injuries. Which has turned out about right and given his low pay packet it is not as bad as it seems, its not like he is Kurt Tippett so its worth putting it in perspective.

The style of play the Dogs use does not suit him at all. Collingwood has been moving towards the same style and he really struggled. I would not have him near a best 22 Doggies team.

As many have said the game has passed him by in terms of style. He can still give a fantastic one on one contest in the air, but the fact is this doesn't happen much anymore so his great strength leaves his weaknesses glaring a lot more.

I think he would have fitted well at the Tigers where they need that second big to take some pressure of Riewolt and they play a style more suited for Trav. But I think Trav had his heart set on a flag rather than games played and a future in the game.

Having said all that I would have Trav back, but only on his new Doggies contract. We dodged a bullet getting out of that Cloke contract and walked straight into another by signing Chris Mayne. He can still play a role, but not as a dominant forward, more as a decoy who can bring the ball to ground. I found it very bizarre seeing him in the ruck. I still am really confused as to why the Dogs never targeted Witts. A dominant tap ruckman would have made the Dogs mids really tough to handle and he would have freed up Roughead & Boyd to play key position as they are the future of that team.

Lol of course a massive long term contract had nothing to do with his plummeting involvement on game days and of course performance clauses over his closing contract years would have nothing to do with his desire to reneg on his contract instead of living up to his contract would it???

FMD!!!!!

Literally no idea why you're getting as upset as you are.

I've said nothing to get that kind of reaction and completed admitted to being wrong about Cloke.

I wonder when the timing of his agreement with the Bulldogs in principle happened. I suspect it happened long before they won the flag and at that point it was probably too late for them to back out.
As I recall, was pre flag win.

I think their pride in being this Bevo honest club meant they couldn't back out.

But he's theirs now and could help them win a flag.... in the reserves

Good call, one we didn't want to go but given his crap attitude to us I'm not sad that he's not with us
Up and running he's better than Treloar, WHE and maybe even Pendles.
Attitude to us? Reckon there was a lot of behind the scenes pressure to modify his off field behaviour. Watching others like Shaw, with similar issues off field, get the boot may have given him an insight to his future at CFC.
In hindsight, I understand his choice to get out while he still had value for us and himself.

Possibly, I'm the type that shows loyalty especially if someone has helped me.Don't know for sure, but would imagine when he had his legal issue, that he couldn't have afforded to have Galbally as his lawyer, thought collingwood looked after him pretty well then

The answer to the OP is what us middle aged married men call "contentment"

We get comfortable, put on a few pounds, put some dough in the bank and stop chasing skirt and we lose the 'edge'.

Cloke has suffered footy's version on contentment. A big fat bank balance, a premiership and he just lost that killer edge you need. 5% off and you're gone in this ruthless game.

His fall is one I wouldn't have predicted.

He was a very good cross country runner in his junior years and I believed his engine together with his durability would have kept him in good stead.

His inability to convert put him in a dark hole that he has been unable to lift himself out of.

IMO he put on too much bulk playing as more of a stay at home FF, largely due to lack of other options.

I just think this comment nails it. Travis would still be good value if he hadn't got the yips. Missing set shots from 15 and 20 metres destroyed his confidence and everybody else's confidence in him. if six shots on goal per game returned 4.2 over the 2014-16 years, instead of 2.4, he would still be at the Pies and a different player than he is now. A bit slower and getting close to the end, but still a force.

Wishing him well, full recovery as much as possible, and contentment in life.

And to be fair, both Geelong and Hawthorn struggled after banging each other up in 1989. The year was left open for us to fill the void
I'll be honest, I'm glad we dodged Hawthorn in that Finals Series.

I reckon he has been carrying this burden for awhile. I alwYs think back to when that gossip mag invaded his privacy and published those nude photos along with Swanny. He never seemed the same to me after that, must have taken a toll on personal life - regardless how he may have tried to act in social media like it was all 'happy families'.

Wonder how those low life gossip mag leaches feel about likely contributing to this. Maybe they can dig around in his bins and find some new material.

Sorry to hear that Cloke has taken time off, his problems what ever they are were not fixed going to the bulldogs, could have made it worse. Who knows.
Hope he gets better soon.
