Hate to be a disagreeable bastard Longwait but I think Cloke is clearly the best key forward in the competition.
He is a little out of form at the moment but I think that has to do with the speculation on what he is doing next year. The pressure is beginning to build on him.
He is not the best player by a long shot but i cant think of a better key forward at this time than him.
I wouldnt call Franklin a key forward but if you wanted to nitpick then Franklin is the one that might have him covered.

I class Franklin as a key forward and as the best key forward in the comp. Key forward for mine being a "go-to" player who can mark the ball or win the ball at ground level or create crumbing opportunities for his fellow forwards or mids. A key forward may not necessarily take the most contested marks or kick the most goals, but they must be able to do both pretty well. They are a big-man target up forward. Franklin is certainly that.

It's a judgement call Z - so I'm certainly prepared to concede that you can make a case that Cloke is the best key forward.

I don't think that we should be going for a $1M+ per season key forward, and if we are, I'd take Franklin at that price and no-one else of the current key forwards in the AFL. Franklin is more likely to win you a premiership than any of the other key forwards because he has a better all-round game and contributes more to the team than the other key forwards, not to ignore that he is the only one of them who has kicked 100+ goals in a season. Cloke hasn't come close and probably never will. Jack Riewoldt will be a better player over the next 5 years than will Travis Cloke imho.

i just want someone on our list like Hall, we worked better with him because not only could he kick 5 a game but now we have the list that if we had him now we would be top 5. sure we have to wait for kids to develop but honestly and truly its been 100 years without a GF win I'm sick of been that close, I'm not that old but I've watched us play since i was about 6 and even then it pissed me off. Our kids like Libba and Wallis are matching players who are many years older and are better than most experienced players. I say we have what it takes and if we make the right moves at the end of this year i say push! we have nothing to lose because we never win anyway. get what we need, a FF and some outside runners, I'm sick of Boyd and his ineffective disposals his not elite. and I'm not into this tanking, we've got what we've got and we need to use it. And i love Tom Hill but if we don't hurry up and play him then i give up

Sure sounds like you are'nt that old.
Boyd is ineffective and not elite !! Rubbish.:D

"Id trade minson at the end of the year and try put him in a deal with a big draft pick for Cloke. Roughy takes number 1 ruck, Cordy still FF and Tom as resting and ruck" !!!!

Trade a vastly improved Minson who is up there with the top ruckmen ?
Tom who ?

So you'd sign up a Travis or whoever when we've a dearth of forwards
working towards that goal ? Good demotivational move.

No chance that I'd trade Minson, he is a required player. We have Cordy, Jones and Grant to develop. Worth it in the long run. What exactly would getting Cloke now achieve? We're not on a tilt for the flag and probably by the next time we are, Cloke might be too old

?????????????????????????????????????????????
Surely you jest !!!!!!!!!!!!!
While I do rate Cloke as a good [ as distinct from great] forward.
No way known he is worth $1m/ year. He might kick you 40 per year, but that makes them very expensive goals.
You could get 3, 20-goals per year forwards for that kind of money [ie = 60 goals], and if one goes down injured, that is still 40 goals. If the $1m man goes down, that = 0 goals.

As to trading Minson for Cloke, personally I would want their first round draft pick thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Dogs saying no to Cloke :thumbsu:

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have ruled themselves out of the race for Travis Cloke, saying the star uncontracted Collingwood forward is out of their price range.

Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney praised Cloke as an "exceptional" player, but told AFL.com.au's Access All Areas that the club would be looking to the draft to replenish its list.

Can someone paraphrase the "candid aasessment of where Jaryd Grant is at with his football" I cant watch videos at work for some reason they dont trust me not to sit here and watch football shit all day, I dont know why.

There was nothing candid about it at all.
He was asked about a few different players such as Cooney, Jones and Grant.
Basically said that Grant would be a player, he just had things to work on.
Was working on building his strength so he could contest more, and also his positioning so he can become more dangerous. He also mentioned (not sure if it was about Grant or Jones) that he wanted them to be good footballers in the big games at the end of the year, and was preparing them for this.
Also, made a quick mention that he needed to learn how to make everything as professional as possible.

Stef - I'll have a go at paraphrasing BMac on Grant as you asked but can I first say, do yourself a favour when you get home and listen to the interview. Maybe I'm an old fool who wants success so badly that I see rainbows everywhere when none exist, however I really feel the club has made a great coaching appointment.

On Grant, Bmac more or less said:
  1. Bmac wants players who see opportunity for themselves and Grant has that.
  2. Grant needs to get bigger and stronger to withstand the buffeting of the game. Coping in round 8 is ok but when footy is played at its' toughest: in the big games, in finals, there are a lot of contests and you have to be able to win those.
  3. Grant has to work on his positional craft so that he can create opportunities for himself. This requires repeat efforts and, like a lot of players, he needs to be able to prepare and present himself as a professional day after day and week after week. We have to get the whole list like that.

Sorry Cecil to more or less repeat your post - you beat me to the punch because I got interrupted half way through my typing (needed to get another cold beer and answer the phone!) Good summary which I agree with.

Talking to a very knowledgeable Geelong supporter today (his son played under Pagan and Rocket at North Melbourne). He had this to say about Bmac, he is credited with turning Stevie J into the player he is today. Went up to him at the end of the season, told him some areas that he needs to improve in his game, said he would pick him up every day at dawn, take him down and they would work on his game, one on one together. Stevie J still credits Bmac as making him the player he is today - take it our leave it, but if Bmac thinks Grant can improve his game, I for one believe him.

Sooooooo Where has Grant been - not injured and not playing? Has he been locked in the gym for 4 weeks or something?

Macca mentioned in a video that he was bulking up, so I can only assume that's what he's been doing.
I wonder if there will be any noticeable change.

If Mac can turn Grant, or any other of our players, into a reincarnation of Stevie J., I for one will help erect a statue to him, to stand into the carpark with E.J.

If he turns Grant into a serviceable full forward I would be pleased.
