Based on those figures we're committing over 25% of our cap space to just 4 players. If we do that we're setting ourselves up for trouble in the years to come as other kids start to come good and look for their fair share of the pie. Assuming Deledio is on the $600k that I've put for him, unless we land Cloke I wouldn't be paying anyone more than that at this stage. Remember Deledio is a 2 time B&F winner and an 8 year veteran who has earnt that sort of deal. Cotchin Martin and Jack as good as they maybe aren't worth the money you've given them at this stage.

For mine I would be looking at getting them on 2-3 year deals for an average $450k per year max. That would pay them well for what they have produced and gives us room to move in the future when the cap increases and their onfield results are demanding of being paid top dollar. The other thing I would be explaining to them for offering them this amount is that with guys like Rance Grimes Ellis Conca & Vickery coming out of contract we need to be able to keep them if this team is going to deliver on what we've set out to achieve. I'd also be explaining that with them taking this sort of coin it would give us the ability to be active in the free agent market as well.

BTW with Cotchins $300k, that is what I would have him on now heading into the final year of his current deal, which is about right given that he was coming of injury concerns when that deal would have been signed. A 50% increase heading into his new deal is nothing to be sneezed at. It would also give us room to move in 2-3 years time where we could then give him another 50% increase and pay him around $600k per season as he enters the prime of his career.

This is exactly why we should not get Cloke. I'm sure the club agree.

All going as expected Cotchin will also be a duel b&f winner and possibly a top 5 finish in this years brownlow / AA.
Cotchin and Reiwoldt are , whether we like it or not , recognised greater amongst the broader community than Lids and therefore are more attractive to and would naturally attract greater offers from other clubs.
With contracts comes prediction and I'd doubt there is to many that would be prepared to predict Lids next 5 years will be better than Lids and Jacks .

there is no point posters speculating on salary cap as deals are done in different ways i.e front ended back ended. and i think those figures posted are ridiculous, i gave up reading when ashbury was on 175k a season/

I don't realy want him because we'd have to pay so much. But I do like the idea of putting in a bid that is high but not super high, so that Collinwood will have to pay over the odds to keep him. That would be quite enjoyable. Maybe Melbourne will do the dirty work for us.

Cloke would cost way too much. Do we need to look at it any further?

If Cloke's getting 700k+ a season for Richmond how will that make someone like Ellis, Conca, Rance feel in a few years time when they are making half of that. Richmond wouldn't be able to afford to up their salary and other clubs will be making offers we can't match.

Not to mention we shouldn't **** with Collingwood because we all know what happened when we did. Also worth noting Collingwood/McGuire do like our competition, they want us to succeed but if we take Cloke, it gives them a reason to target us and we do not need that whilst we're trying to get out of a 30 year slump.

I would prefer to target a forward that won't cost as much, Tippett maybe?

With what the players are showing at the moment they dont need a pay rise. Seems to be half the problem, we have no real depth and players are just expecting to be on good dollars by default and now we are scared of being held ransom by them? Bring in some top shelf talent and quit bullshitting us with how Houli and grigg were great pick ups...they are depth and thats it. But sticking to mediocre has served us well and is safe for us burnt supporters who are too scared to dream anymore.

Something has to be done very soon. Sick of being fed spin...i thought that left with Terry.

Bringing in someone like Cloke would reduce our ability to improve our depth . 1 player on 900 or upgrade our 22-32 best players, which may cost is an additional 100k per player . I'd prefer the dough be spent to upgrade our bottom end . Our issues at the moment is our depth is the worst in the competition and by some margin .

The bottom can be replaced through the draft and if the list manager is any good they can manage Clokes pay in the first few years so we have room to move. Continue to play the draft well is better thann depth with major weaknesses.

I do see the point of it all....just annoyed and once again tired of waiting.

Conca will be lucky to be on a list in a few years time

Something has to be done soon about what exactly. And whats this spin you talk of?

Richmond will be going after Travis Cloke so hard it wont be funny, as he is the missing link to their team

Some stats from Mark Stevens article in the HUN this morning.
The Tigers have averaged 29.6 more disposals than their opponents, ranked third in the competition.
They also rank No.1 in contested footy at plus 12.7 a game against their opponents.
On top of that, they get the ball inside 50 12 more times than the opposition on average (No.3)
Put Travis Cloke in that forward line, and we might be able to take advantage of some of these wins. 6 games under 12 points... Yes Cloke is expensive, but he wins us at least 4 of those 6 games, if not all of them...
Bloody hell, is there any more proof needed that we should go hard for him.
I am friggin' sick to the guts at losing to Carlton. It's the final straw...

I would say the reason why we have so many more disposals than the opposition is becuase we play the loose man in defence so much (usually can't see this on the TV but if you are at the ground it's quite noticeable). That means there are lots of posessions in the back half as we switch the play. Normally the extra man back is employed purely as a tactic to slow the opposition down after a few quick goals. We seem to build our gameplan around it.

I would guess that the contested stat is also a byproduct of this as once it gets into our FL it is always congested. I'm tipping this is also why we have so many more inside 50's as the etra man back allows us to bomb it back into the FL whenever the opposition rebound.

We do need someone to play CHF though. It's just the question of whether paying him that much is worth it.

Having reflected a bit more on the Cloke situation and our situation, IMO not yet tigers. Keep your powder dry. When the time comes, we need to hit the target that gives us the boost from contenders to premiers.
By that I mean, build the fundamentals to the point where they get us to top 5 or 4 and then see what we really need to take the next quantum leap. Right now, we havent solidified where we are at in real terms, so the variables are to great to risk $$$ and we dont get max value from them.

If this is true and we don't go crazy with his wage, I am happy with this. I would be happy to give him the 5 years he was after if that gets it over the line.
