It was alluded to on another thread, but now it's official. Travis Varcoe will miss up to 10 weeks with stress fractures which were operated on today.

GEELONG midfielder Travis Varcoe will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks after foot surgery on Tuesday.

Varcoe was examined by a specialist on Tuesday morning and diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot.

"Travis had discomfort in his foot and the scans showed the stress fracture," Geelong's general manager of football Neil Balme said.

Bad news but he shouldn't miss more than a month of the season by my reckoning.

Trav has had a bad run with pre-season injuries !

a real blow, will miss watching Varcoe in action, hoping for a speedy recovery.
Didn't he come to the club with stress fracture problems ?

opens up an opportunity for Byrnes or even Motlop to step up and play that quick, hard-running role ...

Sucks but better happening now than during the season. Has to be one of the worst types of injuries, having to stay off it. Assuming plenty of swimming and cycling to get fitness back afterwards.

Incidentally, is this the same type of injury which he came to the club with initially?

!@$!@#%!

He was riding such a wave of momentum too after the GF performance too...

I wish him all the best for a speedy.. but not too speedy recovery. Hopefully, like Tommahawk, they get it early and under control and let it heal.....

We need you Trav.... get it better....

GO Catters...

Question is... do we now see more of Hogan, Byrnes or a newbie like Schredder get more time.....

Will be interesting....

Possibly time for Motlop to show if he has what it takes.

Just hope they don't rush him back, as we all know foot injuries can be slow healers and can turn bad.

Disappointing to not have Trav out there but it does create an opportunity for others to step up.

Re dazbroncos question, I think it depends on who they replace Ling with, if you replace him with a more 'pure' midfielder i.e. a guy who can give you a lot of midfield minutes, such as Hogan, or Guthrie maybe, then Byrnes probably comes in for Varcoe in the short term, but Shan doesn't give a lot as a mid compared to what he does as a forward so if you replace Ling with someone who isn't necessarily a mid then a mid might come in for Trav. Ling and Varcoe between them cover a lot of ground (in Ling's case did) although they are different types of players, so the guys who come in for them will have to offer a fair bit to the secondary mid rotation, especially with only three on the bench.

One thing I would say is given the importance of pace and covering the ground at Subi it probably means Byrnes is every chance for round 1 now if he has a good PS.

For ****s sake
What is it with all these stress related injuries?

Were they never diagnosed 10 years ago or are the bodies just being pushed so hard now that it's happening more often?

Going to miss watching him glide past the contest.

Damm it. Ok, enough injuries fellas, quota's full.

Yep. Two best 22 players in Varcoe and Menzel injured, two best 22 players retired in Ottens and Ling, and two of Otto's potential replacements in Simpson and Vardy injured.

Add the losses of Moons and Dasher into the mix and our depth will be tested early in the season.

Good to see you back PO....

Welcome back!

:D

Go Catters

I've still been here, just dropped the posting rate a bit in the off season.

Will be away (no bigfooty :() for a couple of weeks from this weekend though.

GO CATS!

Agree, add in Pods missing a lot of pre season (even though he should be back for round 1) and we've got a fair few more injuries than at the same time last year.

All I want from our NAB Cup is no more injuries.

The injuries do give us a chance to see whether our depth is indeed good.

I hate pre-season injuries, and the interferance with preparation.

(not too keen on injuries during the season either...)

May not be pre-season injury as surgery is some times last resort,I'm tipping he's carried it since last year and hasn't responded to treatment.

I like a good conspiracy theory.:)

He's had it for a while. Was wearing a moon boot at the Point Lonsdale swim.

Could it be that the ground is hard as concrete during the summer? Might screw with stress fractures and the likes. They'd better wrap the Tomahawk in cotton wool... or water the bloody track a bit. We're off restrictions ya know!:p

Simpson, Varcoe, Menzel, Vardy.

And Pods, SJ & Mitch Brown not fully polished & ready to go

Time now for the emerging guns to tear it up in the NAB

Taking the opportunity to sink the boot even when he's down with injury vc?...classy.

A big loss for early on and hopefully gets right and back to GF form. As fpm suggested...with TV, Vardy, Menzel, out of our best 22, and Mooney, Milburn Ling and Ottens gone, our depth will be tested.

Always had good wraps on Motlop......surely this is his chance? Or Murdoch perhaps?

Dont post much but...

Shame for him to go down! Had great momentum towards the end of the year.

Whats angered me further has been the absolutely shameful and disrespectful comments on the herald sun's website.. just thought i'd bring them up the only reason i posted really.
