I think Rioli should be in trouble for ducking the head trying to gain a free kick while knowing be could injure himself very seriously.

Disgraceful.

Shouldn't have a case to answer for. But he chose to bump and hit in the head so could be in strife.

Rioli put himself in danger by ducking. Look at his head movement when he sees Varcoe coming towards him, instead of moving his head out of danger he ducks it lower to make sure he gets head high contact. EXACTLY the behaviour the AFL umpires are suppose to be stamping out, instead however, they give him a free kick and goal.

So keep putting ur head neck and spine in danger kids, because the umpires still reward it.

I don't think he chose to bump at all. The bump was accidental as both players went for a ground ball in real time. In slo-mo Rioli got the ball first, so Varcoe got up, stretched, went to the toilet, washed his hands, made himself a chicken sandwich, ate it, and then got back down and lined up Rioli's head.

He did manage to win a free kick for a high tackle by Frost in which I'm not even sure he was tackled, whilst throwing himself backward into Frost's armpit. Goal.
After he was thrown the ball by his teammate who should have been pinged before Rioli even got it

This really should have been dealt with by now.

The Pies play on Thursday night, if Varcoe is suspended and we decide to take it to the tribunal the hearing would probably be Tuesday night. Then if we appeal that the appeal would be Wednesday night, that's a bit rushed.

If the AFL wants to play footy on Thursday nights' it has to adjust the MRP results for teams involved.

I guess I'm one of the only people to see it differently.

I thought he was genuinely going for the ball and tucked his head in/ducked for self preservation rather than staging for a free. Accidental on Varcoe's part but he may cop a week at most.

I think slow-mo skews our perception, a lot.

The AFL are trying to rub out the driving forward of the head when you gain possession. Not when you bend over to try pick up the ball.

Players will have to try and scoop the ball up with their feet now instead of picking the ball up in fear of giving away frees.

Varcoe didn't actually do anything wrong. He went down for the ball without sticking his head over it, he didn't go to ground so he would give away a free for below the knees or HTB, and he wasn't trying to bump. Textbook technique.

Rioli didn't need to lower his head the way he did and an impact from another oncoming players can be very dangerous.

Let's look at it this way ...

... If Rioli had taken clean possession in that situation, and the ball was then held up ...

... it would have been a free kick to Collingwood (under the recent rule change that 'ducking the head' becomes the 'prior opportunity')

Agreed Varcoe didn't intentionally didn't do anything wrong. Certainly no malice involved but 'textbook technique' would be turning your body to shield your head from contact which also reduces the likelihood of contact with your opponents head.

Rioli was tracking the ball trying to pick it up and tucked his head in for self preservation. Imagine he left his head the the position it was. Could've had another bloke in a neck brace.

I dont understand how it could possibly get the same punishment as Buddys bump. Fair enough high contact free kick but joke report.

So no case for Cloke with the errant boot to the face???

No way
