I am fairly sure that the only Geelong player I have ever bestowed the title of "god" to is one G. Ablett, Snr.

And even then, as an atheist, it didn't sit comfortably with me.

But I'm just trying to lighten the mood now.

See Pivo, even as a self proclaimed athiest there's that little voice inside you saying, "Be careful!!! don't go there!", let the fools amuse each other, but keep quiet on this one!
Smart thinking!:D

Can't understand you, ...... at times you seem so logical and rational....do you need to be loved?
Is that it!.....if it is, I understand then.:)

The two things I doubt you understand are logical and rational. Dont use words that just make you look stupid.

I now understand why I had no idea whatsoever about Menzel, that being he hasn't played for two years due to injury. The last two years I've noticed the younger players, not just the players involved in the trio prems. If he's as good as I saw in the link above then I now understand why there was so much hype a few months ago, sadly it happened again..

For a general question would you say Menzel is/was better then Motlop currently? Curious, sorry.

Coulda shoulda woulda been I guess. Mots hadn't even cracked the senior team at that stage (albeit had his own injury concerns).

Oh and he kicked 5 goals against a Collingwood side that was 21-1. It was his first full year of senior footy and the sky was the limit from there on but injuries floored him unfortunately.

Some people saw Menz as the next Stevie J. I saw enough to know Menz had the potential to be a superior talent. As someone mentioned elsewhere on this forum, he had not been so excited about a player since Gaz Snr. arrived at the Cattery,... I have to agree.

To answer your question - I don't like comparing apples to oranges, but if I had to I'd say Mots @ 22yrs with 2 full seasons played is ahead of where Menz was @ 19yrs in his first full season.

Let's hope the Gods (those other Abletts) one day allow us to wittness an unrestricted Menzel 'trick bag' open up on the end of many magical Motlop moments - that would be football heaven :rainbow:

*Keeping the thread on track - I'd hate to play cards with Travis Varcoe. On song, he has the quickest hands I've seen around the club for some time :thumbsu::footy:

And today, we brought in some VFL guns like Walker, Stringer, and they showed similar traits- exceptional attitude and desire, but lacking in the real class you need to win finals.
And Brown is killing it in VFL. Can't stay in.
Stick with a proven game changer with class, X factor, goal sense and elite disposal. He is worth persevering with. Right now, his forward pressure acts / tackles is great. Wait til he gets his touch back.
Great post.

Quoted for being spot on and hilarious. Some posters like the aforementioned and turbo form an opinion and no amount of rational discussion will away them. Bottom line, every club has its own hodgepodge

very different sort of player. Like comparing Duncan & Motlop. But had superstar written all over him.

Does anyone think Varcoe will amass double figure possessions this week, currently running at 20% or 5/1 against.

Can he be carried beyond 6 weeks at this rate and not impact negatively on our finals chances??

I've got him down for 14 Meto. :)

I usually dont play the man - and think thats a fair statement - and I fully respect differing opinions and the airing of them - but when the same song is on the radio over and over and over you do get sick of hearing it...

Interesting question. He needs to, unless he can translate 8 touches into 3 goals (which is a definite contribution on the scoreboard), but really 15-20 shouldn't be unreasonable. He's played over 100 games, has been there for 8 years now, and has had 5 weeks back in the seniors. He has to step up.

I hate bagging Geelong players and try never to play the man when posting here.

I think it is fair and evidential that Varcoe has not been good enough yet. There are reasons sure - like a long injury lay off for really 2 years - but he has had quite a few weeks back and needs to get a dozen effective disposals, half a dozen tackles and a heap of pressure acts this week.

He needs these for his confidence - we need them to help us win the game and to help us see us going all the way this year.

We know he can do it - but the time for him to do it is coming soon.

Over 100, wow that's impressive. Just been watching Get Stoked rd 21, really great viewing all the indigenous boys were there and Varcoe looks great, seriously toned and in shape.
Is his problem physiological rather than fitness, the second rate excuse some people are putting up?

Fact is, wouldn't be out there if fitness staff hadn't ticked the boxes and he's been back for ages now, so no, he's fit alright.
Is he worried about injury? ...maybe!.... if that's the case then it is purely a physc issue, and I don't think you improve that in hard games of AFL football.
IMO he definately needs VFL to feel ball in hand more often and enjoy his footy again.

JD, it's not a matter of just bagging!

Meto, you've previously said your son was a runner.

Just how long did it take him to hit peak fitness after a lay off?
As much as you dont like it, Varcoe is an outside runner.

And we actually need him to make 5 (or so) runs every single quarter. Whether he gets it or not.
I still say he isn't fit.

Because he keeps doing these lazy tackles. You know the ones where rather than stream ahead to try and tackle the guy that might get it in a second he hangs off and just goes for the first possession gatherer. With full expectation (knowledge) that the ball will be gone when he gets there.

but could he beat Gene Wilder in a shootout ?

Can hardly blame the young lad. ;)

I thought we were friends!o_O...that goes through to the keeper, cause was funny!!:D

Vinum,
First as you probably well know you need good aerobic base mileage to strengthen before you begin to run say 500 mt reps at say 80% with longer than ideal recovery so as not to strain or over fatigue, you increase the number of reps before you shorten recovery time recovery is crucial. I'm talking middle distance runners.

Depending on the individual, base mileage would take roughly 6 weeks before reps.

I think Varcoe is very fit for a mainly anerobic athlete, from what I've seen he seems to struggle with the recovery bit.
He's a burst runner that's not getting the ball atm.

I'm not priviliged to training sessions so I can't be certain, but in his games that is my observation. Seems to have 1 run in him then that's it for a while, not that we've witnessed that for some time.
If he could get it 5 times a quarter he'd be playing almost like Motlop! But I probably like you are running out of patience.

See I dont need him to get it 5 times a quarter.
But I want him harassing all the way up the line towards the opposition goals, and then making runs (being a viable option) 5 times a quarter.

I had a bit of a look back through history. And in early 2011 he was pretty much getting it 12-15 times until after the Perth game when he started to get it more.

Say 19 possessions or so. And one game was 30.

Tomorrow night I just want to see him bring something.
