It was his turn, that's all.

Fair enough Fred,...I was highlighting his extraordinary half game statistics, that's all, not trying to tip Trav out of the side, I've mentioned it on another thread in general discussion.

You're one sick puppy DTC,.....suppose you're going to suggest to the boys he was close to bog,....
Hey dude, Stokes got it 30 times coze he runs and presents all the time,...better signs tonight for Varcoe he was more pro-active, but he doesn't like the hardball it's easy to see, but if he works hard outside that's alright imo.
Funny how you come out of the woodwork when you can talk him up a little, gee hadn't you gone to ground lately though, typical!

Doesn't do the big runs like Motlop and Christensen

if there is one thing he does it is makes runs, and runs.

vc pointed it out the other day.

you still dont gettit do ya? he aint an inside mid that bangs, he is an outsider, just like motlop. i dont see motlop putting his body on the line either.

Not on present form he isn't though. Did not make one line breaking dash tonight (although I missed the first 10 mins of the 2nd Q).

Only really presented as a link up option tonight and actually handballed off on a couple occasions when I thought he was in a good position to take on his man and gain some yardage.

Not sure if its a confidence issue or he just hasn't got it in his legs after all his injuries to put on the afterburners so decides to be disciplined and hand off but he is still quite a long way from his dashing best.

His ability to run past the contest and fling out one arm as a "tackle" is unparalleled. I'll give him that. That's the extent of his running since his return. Even his "forward pressure" has been severely overrated since his return. 8 tackles one week and everyone got moist; but the truth is he had little effect. Cyril had 3 tackles that week and decimated Varcoe in terms of "defensive pressure". People are seduced by stats too easily.

Low on confidence. Wants to give off at every opportunity.

Not anywhere near it at the moment but an improvement. Must have in the side if we want to have a chance at the flag I feel.

i am not saying he deserves his spot in the side at the moment, far from it, he is seriously out of form.

but he was still running from one end to the other, more than a couple of times, that i do recognise.

Great to see that you're prepared to tone it down a little, "he did better" because he was playing midfield and presented as an option, and "no" he doesn't put his body on the line like Motlop's prepared to do.
That's why Mots was on for a 32 possession game. Caddy got 21 from a half, Blitz first game back for him remember 17, just the one between him and Trav.
Some of Blitz's knocks and tapes result in a couple of goals as well, had an influential game.

So yes, "I'm a reasonable person," I did say for a midfielder 15 possessions was a pass he got 18, but you've got to remember Smedts was dropped for only 15.
There are guys like Cowan who charges like Motlop,... and GHS who are getting over 30 possessions and around bog every week, remember them as well.

Why do you keep insisting on using stats to measure a players performance?

Get off the couch and travel to the matches to get a better indication of a players performance, which is done by watching the matches live.

All the bickering about Varcoe is pathetic, specially PBateman, but the reality is, as barmy left with us, THAT is what he brings, when necessary, and it is coming. What is pathetic is this is like peeing into the wind- stupid, thoughtless, and embarrassing. It's obvious Patrick why he is a favourite, and why MC is extra patient with him. What he brings is unique, and just watch how closely he is tagged weekly. This crap gets brought up all the time, he keeps getting a game, our MC has us 2nd on the ladder, and TV was instrumental in us winning our last flag and beating Haw rd 1 this year, and yesterday was a reasonable performance. He was instrumental in linking up and goal assists. But do we really have to justify his performance every week until he has hit fitness and touch??
This is tedious, having a weekly dissection of one player's performance in isolation.

Good signs from Trav last night and surely he will take some confidence from it. His speed and ability to apply defensive pressure is first rate and the MC rightly value this.

The gangof4 in Motlop, Christensen, Stokes and Varcoe give us some real toe. Opposition coaches have their work cut out in matching them all up.

I thought Varcoe was better and hope he takes some confidence out of that performance.

The MC are not going to drop him so as Cat supporters we need to just hope he improves each week. He still has 2 H&A games to get some more fitness and touch.

I just get the feeling that the indigenous boys enjoy playing with each other - Bundy, Motlop, Stokes and Varcoe. If all play and play well - we are a big chance to win matches.

As was said above he gave it off very quickly last night.
There were a number of times I thought he could have taken off.

But I wasn't there and have no idea how far he had already run to provide the link up.

As much as I'd like to see him carry it I'd prefer the give rather than what Smedts does in continually ignoring the first option.

Yeah I agree VC. If he can just take on the game a bit more and not hand off so quickly all the time - he and we will be better off.

Smedts will become a player I think but not this year. Varcoe has more to offer this season - but is still down on his form. But if he can play a good game next week Cats fans will be smiling.

Balanced assessment Vinum.....to me his pace is ok but not explosive like Motlop and Christiansen that's why he doesn't try linebreaks like those two and even Caddy, whom I'm mightily impressed with after last night. Stokes will take on the tacklers as well.

But there were positive signs he's running more around the ball looking to be an option, at times his delivery was a little off, and I consider him a good passer by foot!
There will be a lot more pressure applied next week so I hope he keeps improving.
I told you if he's released from that over emphasis on tackling he'll still make a couple stick but also get up to the 20 possession standard.
I notice before the bounce Selwood patting him on the head as if to say come on you can do it, gee I like that Selwood what a Captain!:thumbsu:

The one I'm impressed with is Cowan takes em on like Motlop, he's fast, tough as a terrier and since the archilles operation has been destroying the opposition in the twos.
Second best runner at the club behind Blicavs,......has a huge tank!
30+ possessions and goals each week, and of course among the best with GHS.

There was one time last night that frustrated me , about 20/30 out from our goal. At his best he would have run and snapped yet he gave it off and it was then messed up. Low on confidence. His kicking is a tad off. He is obvious kicking short , try to err at feet not over head but at his best he is pin point. Still I do think he did show a small amount more. If Mr Orange Whip has next week off then TV will have to find it and use a lot better.

Good observations Meto. Would it be fair to say TV is not as naturally confident as some others? Or is it just a hang over from missing so much football?

Most likely.
From colleagues who watch TV at trg, he exudes confidence and does things others wouldn't try, but in games, he is aware he has missed so much footy, the timing is nqr.

I was impressed too with Cowan. Looks like he like it tough and hard , bursts away from packs and has a tank. Yes his kicking could be better but I rate it with Selwood's a couple of years ago. The more he plays the better it will get imo. His pace may mean he is a better chance the GHS atm.

As someone said his form has just made it very hard for the chop squad at years end. Could he get a game in the next week or two?

OK. Thats good , it mean it will come. Like Rivers last night once could start to see a bit of confidence breaking out
