You no like Varcoe as the sub?...zat it!
Johnson has become comically bad. Every set shot is an adventure these days.
I suspect his groin is much worse than they've let on and it's effected his penetration - especially on his right side. On the run he's okish, although there seem to be a lot of howlers now, but from a set shot any more than 30m is really pushing it. I think that snap around the corner against West Coast last year from directly in front makes a lot more sense now.
Off topic, but I found it intriguing that the goal he kicked from play on the run in the last quarter was from outside the paint and went through easily. But he had to swing around to hit that one, which you'd never do from a set shot.
Varcoe's pace and tackling are too important for him to be sub. By having a lot of fast players who can tackle well you create more perceived pressure forcing the opposition to rush possession more.
I'd have Chappy/Caddy/Stokes as the potential subs because they are all good impact players.
Those saying Chappy is too good to be sub I totally disagree, Chappy has missed a lot of AFL and is at the end of his career, he also doesn't have the pace. I'd much rather him come on fresh at the end of a game rather than be subbed out.
As an impact player coming on with 10min to go in the 3rd quarter he could do a fair bit of damage when everyone else is tired. He could also swing the momentum which is hugely important.

Forget a kicking coach - he needs something quite different if that's his affliction![]()
I'd say those others have the equal for Varcoes pace?...anyhow your talking about 37 possession and match winners here.
You can run, but no good if ball is not in hand!....savy!
Nonsense.
At the risk of repeating my post on Cyril Rioli, and his value as a player, what you do when you dont have the ball is very very important....critical in fact....and that goes for every player.
When you shepherd, you dont have the ball.
When you tackle, you dont have the ball.
When you run to space, to create space behind you for a leading forward, you dont have the ball.
When you run to create an option for the ball carrier, you dont have the ball.
When you "zone" to prevent a kick-in option for a full back you dont have the ball
When you chase and chase to put pressure on an opposition player forcing an error and possible turnover, you dont have the ball
......and so on and so on........
All of these things are gold to a professional coach, and to the players trying to build a team ethic.
Rating players on kicks, marks and handballs is living in the 70's.

Yep I noticed that too. There must be some kind of condition in his hip which allows the kicking across the body to be far easier than kicking straight through. Explains why his set shots are so short and low (anyone else noticed how low he kicks them now).
In the scheme of things it might be minor. He's still a fabulous player, and has actually made a successful transition to the midfield. Very few do that. Just hope if the siren goes in a big game he's not more than 25 metres out.
In my humble estimation one Travis doesn't equal a Cyril, he plays like Motlop imo.
Anyhow I'm glad that you're in raptures, sorry, but I'm not, his last couple have been just games where he added to his possessions on a few link plays. His kicking is short and his efficiency ordinary.
Most of these came when the tide had turned our way. That's my observation of his game
If he's doing things of great value that I'm not appreciating then I must be looking through 20th Century glasses, but I know one thing, I'd swap him for Cyril in a heartbeat.
You're obsessed! I never mentioned Travis Varcoe in my post.....I was simply challenging your statement that "you can run, but no good without ball in hand...." That statement is clearly nonsensical.
I certainly wasn't comparing TV with Rioli or Motlop so I don't know why you mentioned them..
My post applies to every player.....not just Travis Varcoe. I was trying to illustrate how simplistic your approach to rating players is....
Obviously, I was wasting my time.
Whatever!... but I considered it very relevant to claims you make re Varcoe (his game when not owning the ball) and my statement was in reference to Varcoe as you well know.
But as I've stated to others imo he's going along 'just ok' atm, and most would agree on that.
Who was it that said on krock that the Geelong coaches are absolutely rapt in what varcoe is doing off the ball.
One of the coaches or players.
So Davids theory holds up.
Look, if they're satisfied with that then I won't argue that angle.
