And yes others stunk tonight. But Corey and Hunt I'm 90 per cent certain will retire and Kelly will surely have his role changed (perhaps back to defense), Hawkins is injured (and suffering from usual horrible hesitant/sloppy/stupid delivery) and Pods will be phased out of the side. Something will change with them at least yet we can't help but feel we will continue to persevere with Varcoe and his soft, shit completely ineffective performances.
Aee this as probable. Pod knows he is done soon and will happy to move out when needed and play when needed. Get Kersten bought into the side and start exposing him to experience. Something hurt tonight which was injured/out of form players selected yet we still only lost by 5 and should have won. Kelly being shifted is good as it puts us in the position to plug s hole with skilled and brainy player but not lose his value. Hawkins was the big ooss tonight ansd agree on Corey and Hunt althogh strangely think Hunt can go again and is well performinga t the moment.

I like varcoe but his attributes of pace, outside run, youth, tackling pressure were all needed in the Geelong team a few years back. Team has changed and now his talents aren't so critical to our team balance.

he will be ok but needs a plan and a position for him next year.

I've never, ever, seen a player more protected, insipid, soft, gutless, overrated, absolutely immune from criticism, and worst of all, promoted ahead of others and kept in the team for absolutely no output.

I wish I would never have to see him in Geelong colours again. Won't happen though.

I think Mitch Duncan lost that game for you guys tonight. Twice in the last 3 1/2 minutes of the game he went for a long bomb down the middle of the ground from defence rather then slow it down and try find a perfect kick. You were in front both times and the kicks practically went to a pack with more Hawk players around and Hawthorn were able to get the ball and thrust it forward. .

Oh sweet Jesus this is my issue. People think I hate Varcoe; I don't. I don't hate any of our boys. But **** me sideways he should not have been playing the last 2 months and anyone with an semblance of an idea of what footy should look like would say the same.

So by extension, the entire Geelong coaching staff don't have a "...semblance of an idea of what footy should look like"

You gotta love absolutist keyboard coaching.

I think you should use your keyboard and write them a really stern email. Actually no, print it out with a nice letterhead that reflects your vast expertise. You know, use MSPaint to draw a football.

"....Scotty, quick! There's a letter from Glassjaw!!"

Yes, the people sticking up for Travis are very noble. It's great that you support "all our boys". I'll start by saying that I was always a huge wrap for Varcoe. Always talked him up, and knew he had huge potential. I even put the #5 on my footy jumper to start 2010.

But GEE WHIZ, how long can we put up with his shit??? Literally for months, he has delivered NOTHING. He has been completely & utterly useless. There is no debating that, no matter how much you love him or the club. He should NOT have been playing tonight. He has NOT earned selection on form. Tonight was just another example of his insipid efforts.

I don't know what the answer is. I STILL believe he has the ability to become a great player, but there is something massively wrong with him.

Varcoe just weak.....what more can you say!....thanks for screwing the season!!!!!!!

Hope they wise up and replace him with a player with courage.
You really are a broken record and a tool. TV is lacking confidence but he has contributed long and hard for this club despite significant injuries. We ****ing get it...you hate Varcoe,

Varcoe will bounce back, some preseason training of keeping on your feet wouldn't go astray and want to see him get a bit more ferocious with his tackling....his speed and tackling was a great asset that hasn't really been this year IMO

FFS those who think his last kick cost us the game know sweet FA about football
However TV needs to put in a huge preseason to atone for what have been sub standard performances this season - being picked largely on reputation.
Needs to earn his spot next season , has all the attributes but needs to deliver.

If that were closer to the truth this topic wouldn't exist or be going off to the extent it is now.

but it is the truth.....and as for the bolded, well.....empty vessels make the most sound.

Blaming Varcoe for the loss is just ignorant. I could name any number of blunders that contributed more to the loss....Duncan's mindless kicking out of defense on 3 occasions in the last.........Jimmy unbelievable brain fade not to run the ball through in the last quarter but grubber it out to Hill...the goal that changed the game....Hawkins...Pods...Rivers...Mackie's awful first half...but that doesnt suit the agendas of some unfortunately...

4.8 to 1.1 in the last. We were shot....it was a great game of footy and the cards fell their way. If TV had kicked the goal, and we had held on it would have been extra time....not sure we had much left tbh..could have been ugly....in fact it already was in terms of I50's and scoreboard pressure in the last quarter....

We would be much better served praising the emergence of a star in Guthrie....the wonderful contribution of Caddy and Murdoch's emergence as a quality player rather than mindless vitriol aimed at one player.

Most of the more rational commentators on this board were doubtful we would win the Premiership this year....we made a preliminary final...we improved from last years effort....and indications are we will get better.

The future looks bright.......GO CATS

Damn Guthrie was good. Was good against Port and Freo, but in such a high pressure game, he really stood up. Very impressive and it's great that we've found a young backman like that who we can rely on. He showed up many of his senior peers.

He showed some composure and confidence like Scarlett, taking them on...he was a gun.

Just as well no one besides Meto is doing that and what else would you really expect from him regarding Varcoe? Everything you go on to say is correct (specially regarding Duncan who really doesn't consistently hurt the opposition enough), however this thread is about Varcoe. Those annoyed at the 2 or 3 months of crap football he has produced before yet another horrid, ineffective game tonight are within there rights to question his selection and value to the team here. You wanna talk about Guthrie and the positives? No problems. There are plenty but this is not the topic for it.

Something about Swiss mountain air and clear thinking. Top post, David :thumbsu:

Top post indeed. And a pleasant change tot he vitriol of late. Im a TV fan but his last few games have not been good. To be blamed fo the loss is just stupid. He in isolation did not cost us that game and anyone who considers that fact is, well... looking for a soft target. He had plenty of partners in crime in butchering that game and to single him out is simply myopic.

TV now needs to get away from the game and have a big preseason with fitness and confidence. Im sure he will be back.

We have seen his best and worse. Time to reset and go again. He will not be cut or delisted or traded. He will be back but I agree he needs to bring more to the table than we have seen recently.

GO Catters

Jimmys was the moment for me as well.. The Cats tried to run time off the clock way to early in my opinion but this was the one moment where that was warranted.. Knock it through and reset.. He is a very smart footballer and i can guarantee he will be thinking about that brain fade for weeks..

But yes how good does the future look..! Now lets get around the boys this sunday and smash some boxes..!

How did he costs us the 'friggin season'? He missed a shot to make scores level. The game goes for longer than your attention span clearly permits.

Understand this has been going on for 11 weeks and this caps it off....any wonder we're the losers when the game could've and should've been won.
Missed the shot!!!......He missed the damn game, and you talk about attention spans???o_O

Fools will not bow to reason....roll out the excuses for your $400,000+ man.
He won't get a game at Hawthorn or Fremantle, Clarkson or Lyon wouldn't tolerate his pea heart.

There is a cult of Varcoe within Geelong and the view of him as a player is so far from his output it is not funny. It was plain to any outsider he was not in the right physical or mental shape to take the field in a final, that we had Taylor Hunt ready to go is going to burn me all summer.

I don't want to hang a bloke on one shocking display, but the truth of the matter is he is earning 450k and I know for a fact he has not been professional in his approach for 18 months.

Well, we've also had other players perform poorly over the year, as well. A problem we've had is that the MC seem to have their favourites, who will get picked regardless of their form, rather than being given ample time in the VFL to come right. Meanwhile, we had guys in the VFL who were never given a chance in their stead.

It happened in '10. Menzel and Duncan spring to mind straight away, both had shown plenty but as soon as old favourites such as Joel Corey were fit, Menzel and Duncan were straight out again and imo it cost Geelong plenty that season.

If you look at the video with about 40s remaining when Varcoe had the shot there was a Cats player by himself about 20m from goal, bottom left hand corner. Sure in hindsight and under no pressure its easy to make the call.

I understand what this thread is about but people bringing up his shot on goal don't have to go back to far in the game to wonder why the **** Jimmy didn't rush that ball through. It was one of numerous howlers he made in the last line this season.

One thing that really did cost Geelong, was players inability to keep their feet in a contest, late in the game it happened a number of times, allowing a Hawthorn player to take an uncontested possession and dispose of it under no pressure. Cats were physically and mentally shot at the end.

What cost Geelong was losing to Freo, pure and simple.

Probably both :p. I actually thought the Hawk moved fairly well tonight and was simply out of form. Didn't have a problem bending over I noticed.

We must've been watching a different player, he was struggling, none more so than late in the game when Tom was in a contest and he went to ground, you could see him almost screaming in pain with his back and he really had a hard time get up of all fours.
