Bringing in GHS for anyone would not have make a lick of difference to the result.

And unless Linga jumped out of the comm box and suited up, i'm prepared to say Sam Mtchell still would have got 40 touches on Friday night.

How is Travis worth pick 10?

RE:

Omg just search him up and he is only 25! I swear he looks like his around 30-32. Anyways if you guys were to lose him then you would only get compensation regarding to your first pick. So if your first pick is 14, you get 15 if you get a first rounder. Hope you don't let him go, he is a beast when fit. But I admit that miss was shocking.

Agree to disagree then I guess. Not so much about bringing GHS in just for the Hawks game. He should have been in all year and I'd argue with him jammed up Mitchell's backside and placing himself between Sam and the ball up all match Mitchell would have been negated a bit. Did a fair job on a bigger, quicker Josh Kennedy earlier in the year.

But I admit that miss was shocking.

More to the point his entire last two months were shocking.

Not sure how you can say that when the Cats effectively played no-one at all on him in the last quarter. It's not like someone was trying to go with him and failing, he was literally standing by himself at stoppages. As far as I can tell he was "head to head" with Steve Johnson, which is not what should ever happen with a damaging opposition midfielder.

In what was a reasonable year for us overall this is my major criticism. Too much hoping with certain players while others seem to have different rules and have killed it in the reserves all year only to watch us continue to 'hope' Varcoe and T Hunt could return to form. 'Hope' Hawkins could do something while injured. 'Hope' Walker could look like an AFL footballer. 'Hope' Smedts could do something mildly useful (when selected which was way too often) and 'hope' Vardy could ruck better than West.

Gotta cut that shit out from day dot next year.

Totally with you up to Varcoe and Hawkins. T. Hunt probably as well. But had no problem with them giving Smedts a bunch of games (which was well before the finals, remember), or Vardy. If anything, West should have be in instead of Blicavs.

Correct the fact West gets overlooked for zblicavs who is a runner and less experienced at the football than he is. West shou,d have been in as he is a more than equal tap ruckman and probability better down the ground.

Have to agree with Meto here David 20 points up at 3/4 time we should have held on,but regardless a 5 point loss to the Hawks and 15 to the other G/F contender in the past 3 weeks to me says we were right in it up to our balls.

A 20 point lead is nothing in the modern game. It is nothing in five minutes of play let alone with thirty minutes left against a strong opponent. We really needed to kick the first two goals of the last and not let Hawthorn get one as early as they did.

But it wasn't "would GHS have made us win the game". The way I saw it framed was "no one would have done more than Corey or Kelly". And that I honestly think is garbage. Horlin-Smith would have had at least 16 touches, I'm very confident of that. And he might have got rid of the ball without either fumbling or falling over too.

Kelly broke his leg in 2004, and missed the rest of that season. He played every game in 2005.

Varcoe has always had - and will always get - far too many excuses easily made for him. He had 12 games after being brought back. That's more than enough. Chapman missed as much footy, and a hamstring for a 30+ year old is just as worrisome, yet starred on return. I wonder why that is?

A. One of them has testicles. It isn't Varcoe.

Kelly's broken leg was in 2004, basically played full years in '05 and '06 yet wasn't back to something near his best until '07.

Varcoe has had shoulder issues before this year so I think it's understandable why he might be a bit reticent about throwing himself in like Chappy. Varcoe will be better next if he's able to get in a full pre season.

He'll get his chance, Partridge. It's a fine line the MC are walking, respecting the older guys who built the house yet at the same time letting the young guys in.

Varcoe hasn't gone near a contested ball in a long time. He's not going to change now. In years gone by receivers were actually ridiculed (correctly), instead of these days when they are praised.

Don't worry, I'm sure we've got plenty of 9 possession, 1 tackle games to look forward to in 2014.

And watching it collapse around them. Scott said himself he would always go with youth. Why didn't Horlin-Smith get picked ahead of Corey? He was every bit as good.

If we had have finished outside the 8 then I would agree with 'watching it collapse around them'. But we were a kick or so from the GF all the MC's decisions being justified.

Corey was still in the team because he was still playing well. It isn't the Corey of '07/'08 but he was still solid in the first two finals.

Re Varcoe: it isn't every players job to go in and get the hard ball. Maybe his shoulder problems prevent him from doing that. He only had 13 possession in R1 yet was very effective. I'll take more of that in 2014.

I'm simply fed up with the defense that gutless receivers get these days. You have to go and get the ball sometimes. He absolutely refuses to do this. And he's had 7 years to learn how.

Please don't lecture anyone about reason. Your argument is in fact an obsession with one player. You somehow seem to forget the fact that there were other Geelong players out there last night who all made mistakes and equally cost us the game - not to mention the Hawthorn players who also won the game.

And it has been going on for longer than 11 weeks. You have been running with the same criticisms of Varcoe for years on this board. He is your whipping boy and it is as simple as that.

He's also been completely correct for most of that time. Just most won't admit it.

The beard makes him look 30ish.Last night Jetta looked in his 30's yet he'd be probably 22 or so.

Have I been teleported back to 2006?

We lose a PF to a bloody good football side by a kick when for all intents and purposes we are 'rebuilding', and now half our list are shit trucks who aren't up to it?

To worst thing I've seen in recent years was when they threw the subs vest to Chappy for his 250th while Varcoe the pea heart started in the team, a disgraceful decision.
He's become our tipping point to mediocrity.

He ranked 22nd DTPoints friday with 29, our least and that for a midfielder!!!!!!

He needs to go.

I actually agree with this, we have too many "pacey" players and not enough ball winners.

Back in 07-11, we where one of the slowest sides, but we where one of the biggest and best contested teams. Pendlebury said after the 2011 GF, that Geelong just bumped the smaller pies team off the ball and wore them out in the second half, so they wanted to get bigger.

Now I don't mind some pace in the side, but Swans and Hawks are slow teams outside a couple of players each and they haven't done bad and it wasn't that bad for us in the past.

Now we have players that are able to run with mobility but don't win a lot of hard contested ball or clearances.

This along with Walker's inclusion, I still can't get over. Was an absolute shocker along with the management of Hawkins all year and lack of contingency plan if he didn't get up which of course he didn't for our most important game of the year.

Actually, I was going to start a new thread on this.... But what happened to our player management this year? I thought we where supposed to rest players, I mean after we won 2011, we apparently lead the way on finals preparation. This year, we didn't look like we bothered at all.

I know Freo was close, but resting one or 2 players especially the older guys in the month up to finals did not happen, even after Freo rested 12 players vs Saints, I though a couple guys might be a late withdrawal...But didn't happen.

And for that reason, I've found it hard to pinpoint which of our snr players are really done and over the hill, or which one's where just too tired.

Well believe it or not but Geelong finished the season 4th for contested possessions per game.

We finished dead last for stoppages though.

Seriously, there's a reason I have 21k post on this forum, and not many in the last two years, and **** all of em on this board, and that's because the vast majority of you all are ****ing idiots.

I'm sick of hearing your shit. You'll write someone off as soon as look at em, but as soon as they look half decent in the VFL you're on your knees with your mouths open.

All you GHS fanbois, would James Kelly or Joel Coey have pooed their pants a half dozen times in a VFL final lie he did iin the second level heat today?

All you wannabe armchair selectors got exposed today. Go forth and multiply.

Next year they'll all be trying to play like Freo, it'll be no place for any fainthearted outside player,.................. and I agree we've gone small and soft run, run in our imaginations a far cry from the 06-07 days.
Same happened to our reserves yesterday, the opposition was to big to strong, just to hard.
